Nailing Canal Pike on Circle Hooks

Back on the canal targeting pike. Its been a while since i last used circle hooks, so i was a bit rusty to start with, but quickly managed to bring it back and bank some lovely pike. Shame one took a nice bite out my finger. Slimy guys.

I would like to make three comments. 1. A couple of weeks ago there were a lot of comments saying you should get an unhooking mat for your carp fishing. As you are fishing canals with hard towpaths etc you need an unhooking mat for pike as well. 2. In 45 + years of pike fishing I have never had a run/take whilst it has been raining. Before rain - yes, as soon as the rain stops yes - but never during rain. 3. I found out a couple of hours ago that my best pike fishing buddy died unexpectedly this afternoon. He was only 65 years old and a really great bloke. Last season he finally achieved his lifetime goal of a 30lb Fen drain pike. We had quite a lot of stuff planned for the 21/22 season, I guess having lost my wingman I'll do it solo. F**k i'm gutted. Life is short and the grave is deep, live every day like it's your last - because one day it will be. Carpe diem.

Aaah the sweet mediative sound of water falling!!...not if you are caught out in it in this part of the world I suppose. Myself I am still experimenting with circle hooks....I am tending to hook through lip and also find that the shape of hook can give good hold without a barb...

I just returned from a session with a rubber lure and a circle hook. Sorry to say, had 7 takes, lost them all, and only the last one was on longer than 3 seconds.

All I use is a single treble hook on mi baits and even on my lures if there small I will take off one of the trebles hooks normally the bk hook (top vid) 👍👍

Hello, how come you do canal fishing, season is closed in canals and rivers if I not wrong?

Only rivers are closed, canals open all year unless a specific fishery that owns a part of it says otherwise, however that would still only affect their allocated area

Canal is still water which isn’t closed, drains, streams and rivers are closed.

Reeling a bit too quick to set the hook. Reel down slowly until you feel the weight, then just lean into it.

All the pike caught in the video were on deads but I did have a couple backup lives haha. I caught another 3 fish using lives, but didnt include them in the video 😂

Yea just whack a single trebel in the baits back. I find circles can work well with pike especially if you can see what the fish is doing with the bait. They're crap for perch though 😅
