Thank you so much for this sir. In the 6th example also, the one with CH3. (Toluene) isn't it safe to say that it is +I since it's an alkyl group?? And -M since no lone pair

I didn't understand why is it that electrons moved from oxygen towards the unsaturated carbon. Where as oxygen is more electro negative than carbon. But in the second molecule it left from carbon to oxygen
@user-ed3vt3js3l
@user-ed3vt3js3l 2 ай бұрын
The donation of electrons from oxygen to carbon in certain resonance structures can seem counterintuitive considering oxygen's higher electronegativity. However, it's important to understand that resonance involves the delocalization of electrons within a molecule, allowing for the formation of multiple resonance structures. In the case of the hydroxyl group (-OH), the lone pair of electrons on oxygen can participate in resonance, leading to the delocalization of electron density. This delocalization can stabilize the molecule overall by distributing electron density more evenly. Additionally, while oxygen is more electronegative than carbon, it doesn't mean that it cannot donate electrons at all. The electronegativity difference between oxygen and carbon isn't so large that it completely prohibits electron donation, especially in the context of resonance effects where electron delocalization occurs.
