Hello, can someone explain to me why H20 geometry is tetrahedral and not trigonal planar, I mean oxygen has 2 atoms bonded to it, wasn't this the case for trigonal planar? Pls explain
@BrookScotts
@BrookScotts 5 ай бұрын
bro , to find the geometry we need to know its hybrid orbital which we found using number of lone pairs which in this case = 2, and number of surrounding atoms around central atom= 2 add them, 2+2 = 4 orbitals which is for sp3 so it will be tetrahedral
@ayoovishuu

Sir. The bond Angle of Water is 104.5°
@k_slushie1588
@k_slushie1588 25 күн бұрын
This angle is smaller than the ideal tetrahedral angle of 109.5° due to the repulsion between the two lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atom. The lone pairs push the hydrogen atoms closer together, reducing the bond angle between the H-O-H bonds. This might come in exam as a question

Sir there are 2 bond pairs of Carbon dioxide That means there are a total of 8 electrons around the carbon, in 4 pairs. Because there are 4 bonds, these are all bond pairs. Each double bond uses 2 bond pairs - which are then thought of as a single unit.
