How do you feel about Mike Leigh's Naked? How do you feel it compares to his other works? Which films would you recommend to those who loved Naked? Thanks for watching!

Leigh's Secret and Lies is masterpiece!

His scene with Brian is a highlight for me. He tries so hard to wound Brian, and at points succeeds, but it is Brian that lands the killing blow, nailing Johnny with the knowledge Brian has seen right through him, and knows Johnny through all the talk and all the verbal domination is an empty vessel, as a lot of narcissistic people are.

He is such an incredible actor aswell. He is so underrated.

His character is almost like an amalgamation of Alex De Large in A Clockwork Orange, Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver and The Butcher in Gaspar Noe's I Stand Alone. Agree?

Yes the duality of this character is certainly like that of Alex delarge

What I find fascinating about Johnny's conversation with Brian is the radical inversion of Christian theodicy. Typically, the excuse for the existence of evil is that God allows evil to bring about a greater good that man simply cannot see because of his epistemic finitude. But as Johnny himself states, "Good exists to get f*cked up by Evil". For Johnny, evil itself is primordial and ultimately triumphant, and that the Good is privation of Evil, not the other way around. Whether this makes Johnny a Gnostic or a nihilistic version of the Lutheran concept of 'radix malorum' (rooted evil) is up for debate.
@dyskinesia6822 Жыл бұрын
Definitely. The pin here is the concept of belief. There is always evil and there is always good -- but when is there really greater good but variations on the same relationship? Evil is primordial and so is good because these are just designations that have been placed because of theory. "Human nature" -- as crude and frowned upon by theorists as the term is -- is always and will always go against God's wishes. When does the respite come? It is a very nihilistic belief but it is supported (and will be supported indefinitely) by the will of the subject. That knowledge that is private to us and only us that we know is implicit in others is the crux of this masterpiece of film.

johnny also had a heart condition he subtly mentioned with the security guard. he's dying, he's sick, he's not acting right. while he had many secrets to fortify is vulnerability, i think this one may have broke him as a person. how does one "not waste his life" if he's going to die soon?
@Sandra-hc4vo2 жыл бұрын
wow great breakdown! He sounds like a character that would be very hard to capture in film.
@YouHaveBeenWatchingFilms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes I can't begin to imagine how Mike Leigh and David Thewlis began working on such a complex character, and it'd be very easy for the film to have fallen into simply being outright offensive, but their understanding of characterisation makes the film disturbingly profound!

"At his most persuasive, Johnny is still a twat..." That part made me laugh. I love this one but it is just such a hard watch, I get so sad and mad watching it but still I've seen it multiple times. I liked your analysis. I also find it interesting to explore the differences and similarities between the two main male characters. These poor women who have to deal with them. The behavior of these two guys is objectively vile but the juxtaposition of them really illuminates their own personal deficits, stemming from the same root. All that said, by the end of the movie i find myself on Johnny's side (i fall for it!), only to have to rug yanked out from under me, when he proves who he is and where his loyalties lie yet again.

The Naked has you feeling all aware of yourself and your nakedness against yourself. Being naked in the face of yourself is a rather difficult situation for me, not everything has to be thought though, some things have to first be felt to be understood; Naked is one of those things.

Just a punt I think naked is brilliant and think people who enjoy this have a chance of helping me out remembering a play / film . Please excuse the real sloppy description of the film /play that I want to remember the title but here goes . I’m pretty sure it’s set in the north maybe Liverpool. Two blokes on a dreary night out but meet up with a couple of women go back to some house that seems close to derelict the most poignant moment was an incredibly passionate connection to some song that may have been a northern soul tune , of course I won’t hold my breath. Cheers if anyone sees this and has a go 👍I’m also guessing it was made early eighties maybe 70s

The way I see the movie, is simply. Here is a very clever Man. The Universe is absurd. We can not understand it. Only try to live in it. The big why? Is destroying him. He has a heart. The parralel character has not. Nobody understands his deep struggle. He is alone and naked. Alienated from a world, he does not have a clue about. Why the world is there. In the first place. He tries to cope with it all with his brain. Ends up walking away with a help stick and 1 leg not in good shape.

Yeah, I think Leigh shows that in the bit with the two Scots and him helping to reunite them....even though he's busting the guy's balls the whole time he does make the effort only to see it end with them screaming each other in conflict and that great shot of him (shown in the video) of him looking isolated and disappointed but not surprised.

Eraserhead is going to an art show. Naked is watching your parents get divorced as a child.

And is there more to the reasons why such abuse of women by men happens so much than, for one, besides the flawed nature of humans in general, men are simply physically stronger than women and often unfairly take advantage of such features of theirs and the female victims especially?
