Nakshatra Symbols from a Unique 1100 Year Old Shiva Temple

Aathmanathar Temple, Avudayar Koil (Thiruperunthurai), Tamil Nadu, India is an architectural wonder and was built by the 9th Century Shivaite Saint Maanikkavaasagarhas from the era of the Pandian Kings.
This temple is unique as it has depicted the Symbols of the 28 Nakshatras in the form of Constellations of Stars (Represented as a Flower Arrangement) at the Entrance Door of the Temple.
A one of a kind temple where Shiva is worshipped without a Shiva Linga and as a Formless Deity and hence worshipped at "Lord of the Soul" (Aathmanathar). The soul is invisible and so is the Lord of this Temple.
Arjuna from Mahabharata is believed to have received the Pasupatastra (Divine Celestial Weapon of Shiva) here at the same place.

Great Arjun sir. If I may add the sequence starts with Uttara Phalguni Sun nak the father and Hasta the Moon the Mother. Maybe showing us that the whole creation comes from father and mother and thus how accurate is vedic astrology Niryana way.

This is a stunning find and explanation! Maybe you can study the Vedanga Jyotisha - where nakshatras are mentioned, and the winter solstice of 1400 BC to see where the trail leads? It is interesting to note that early vedic period is thought to be 1500 BC, and is associated with Painted Grey Ware(PGW) Culture. And seemingly distinct from Indus Valley.

Namaskaram Sir, Thanks for sharing your deep analysis on the nakshatras. Looks like the sequence of nakshatras is a mirror image of the nakshatras in the sky. I may add few points of my understanding in two ways. 1. When we lie down placing head in the Northeast direction and look upon the sky, the sequence from Revati to uttara phalguni starts from North to east and hasta to uttarabhadra pada from south to west. It is exactly the order in clockwise which we have in the south indian chart. 2. Mirror image can be seen in water reflections When you .face Northeast and see the sequence of nakshatras in the water reflection, it would be the order in which they are depicted in the temple.

He is well versed in both Vedic Science ( Upanishads, Puranas, Jyotish...) and Modern Science (he is a PhD in Computing and Electronic System design, he is a Marketing Strategist by profession..). @@sacredflames07 May be but as far as I know... Rameshwaram lingam is established to get rid of Sin like Brahma Hatya.... Lord Rama worshipped this Lingam to get rid of Brahma Hatya too after killing demon Ravana.. Remeber Ravana was Son of Rishi (Brahmin) even though he was demon.. No one get Mokshya without getting rid of Paapa like Brahma hatya.... After worshipping the Rameshwaram lingam he returned back to his home Ayodhya and his Rajya visekha was been done.. which Make him Chakra varti Maharaja... Pisces is a Exaltation point of venus... So by making his venus exalted I.e. Sita Mata he made his Sun exalted (i.e. Atman)... After all he was Surya vamsi (Iswaku kula)..

@@26gargi Can be but Sunita ji as far as I know Chakra is a circular disc which is round in same and meaning of Chakra varti is to be a conquer of the world like Sudharsan chakra.(सुदर्शन चक्र) Even Ayodhya is undefeatable at that time due to his father Dasharatha...and 3 words in Ayodhya (अयोध्या व अयोद्या) I.e.अ,य, द्य represents trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.. Dasharatha the father of lord Rama was also Maharathi( महारथी) but was childless and lord Rama was born after doing Putresthi yagana(पुत्रेष्ठी यज्ञ)... So Lord Rama had exalted Sun in Aries during birth.. which latter get debilitated by his father karma... due to which he need to go for forest living(वन वास) and kill Ravana and he also need to performअश्वमेध यज्ञ (Horse sacrificing ceremony) and Rajasui yagna.. to bring Sun back to its original form.. Even Aditya Hridyum was chanted during the war period with Ravana at Lanka.. Rudra Rupa (रुप) Hanuman have to come as a Saviour for him and his brother Laxmana.

Among the famous Nayanars, Sri Maanika Vaasagar composed many poems collectively called Thirumurai. In a discourse of 3rd Thirumurai of AIR Madurai, the above temple incident is described in detail. You could research into the meaning of poem composed and sung by this Nayanars for more explanation to those Nakshatra symbols !

Thank you so very much. Very interesting. When I saw Abhijit, with nothingness , between revati and Aswini, it made think this is the Dharma for current time to come into balance. Let me see explain. I have moon in revati and Mercury and Venus in Aswini. My mind is either extremely overactive or prefers sleep, there is no in between. It is past 2 years, I started connecting to Shiva (I was never devotional kind), and some things happened in life that disconnected me with outer world , I felt disillusioned, I turned to within, for the first time I started spending time in silence (nothingness). The amount of healing that happened is indescribable. As technology exploded, we all are using our 5 senses more and less of body. More Rahu and less Ketu. That got us to state of imbalance. State of delusions. Rahu Maya. We started living in the mind, spinning stories about self and other, than in reality. It is this nothingness, training mind not to think, to let things be, that is very difficult but necessary remedy for people to come into inner balance.
