Thanks for sharing this! The rails are still in the middle of Howard Street 14 years later, with some plans floating about to make it a tourist line

I don't know about street running, but the cane trains are well and truly alive in Mackay. I was last there about 18 months ago, and the rails were gleaming like an interstate freight line. As a West Australian, I was amazed that sugar cane, coal mining and tourism could coexist so well together

Brings tears to my eyes. What a loss to the area. I remember the whole thing as a boy and my dad used to take me up to watch the trains.

@shieldzee115 жыл бұрын
most of them have been moved north to Bundaberg mills but i have hear they are selling them over seas as they are now too small for the Bundaberg bins that are much bigger then Nambours were so sad they kill the mill of in Nambour as i used to wait for the trains at the top of the car-park when they were shunting the bins in to the mill it was one of the best things about Nambour.

They definitely don't have the usual 5-10mph / 10-20km/h speed limit in place that a lot of similar road/rail sharing or older tramway schemes tend to suffer...! "Just gun it and get up that hill"!

Yeah, but how many trucks would you need to shift all that cane which that one pair of diesel shunters and single steam loco managed to haul in three quick runs? Serious traffic jam ahoy, rather than a slightly delayed right turn for a few people and a slightly lengthened red light phase...

@cnsylvester1 - You aren't familiar with the documentary on "Bundy's Long Ride" (or similar title), in which a Bundaberg Fowler loco did a tour of as many of the cane tramways along the Queensland coast as it could, from Nambour up to Mossman. I think Chris9017 was asking if it was the same loco.
@ethanpicken6992 Жыл бұрын
For anyone watching this in the future the documentary is called "Bundy's Last Great Adventure" and it's up on youtube. Link to the first video, it seems to be split into 4 parts: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3eunHh4p92bY6c

Australian discs should be fully playable on European systems, so long as they're specified as multi-region/region-free, or at least regions 2+4 (as this sort of thing typically is) which covers both Europe and Oceania. The actual video systems are the same underneath it all so there won't be any playback issues other than that. Alternatively, just remove the region locking on your player (assuming it's not e.g. a PC DVDROM drive) and all will be fine and dandy :)

Went through Nambour a few days ago. Forgot there was a cane tramway here. Looks like it is 2 foot gauge. The only other street running I know of is in Wycheproof, Victoria, which is the regular Victorian Railways 5 foot 3 inch railway.

@Gray Iain The rails are still there in the street. There is also about 500 metres of tram rail, standard gauge, left in Brisbane in the centre median on Old Cleveland Rd, Camp Hill.
