My gelding is Bill. When his little brother was born and was marked almost exactly the same. Our grandson said he is Bill II. So now I had a 10 year old and 6 year old team named Bill. When I say Bill, they both perked their ears and paid attention. The best part of this is that the older brother was no longer as pokey and kept up all of the time. They were sold as a team. The new owner has a Bill and says they work well as three abreast.

I'm with Brenda on names: There is a given name, then there is a nickname that naturally occurs to you in the course of life that you wind up actually using! LOL! My son and daughter have their birth certificate names, but they both have nicknames that I use more often than their names. It's a sign of familiar affection IMHO.

Lovely square corners. A big team of dapple grey's taught me how to do those when I was 15. The boss sent me out to cut pot holes and sloughs (and a few days later rake them with a dump rake for baling) with the team while he did the fields with the tractor mower and side delivery rake. I later hauled bales and cultivated summer fallow with the tractor.

Beautiful weather , same as here. I have about 15 acres down, about 5 acres cut with horses, rest with tractor and haybine. Darn pitman arms, I keep telling myself to cut a new spare, but keep putting it off. Really need to just do it as I have lots of white oak which would suit I think. I'd like to have a mower I could customise with a wobble drive run the belt off the flywheel replaced with a pulley, and build the wobble drive into the lift apparatus. I had a JD 3 pt hitch 350 mower years ago with a lovely smooth wobble drive, I'd use something like that, quiet, smooth and drives easy. I find my hay is about half a crop this year, even the stuff that got manure and a bit of fertiliser this spring seems pretty light. Raking, the one thing I like about raking with the horses is the ability to turn on the spot on those point windrows, tractor is a pain. Weeping may endure for a night/season, but joy cometh in the morning. If I recall...

I have 15 shetland ponies that I breed every two years or so. This year we had three, a colt and two phillies. I usually wait and let the baby name itself. The colt was the first born from my stallion so I call him Bubby jr. after his Daddy. The phillies are April cause she was born in April and Misty on account of the mist she was born in. It took weeks to settle on there names so don't rush it she'll name herself.

It would be interesting to hear about the different processes involved with haying. I think everyone knows about mowing but are there different ways to mow? Then what is that spinner equipment called and what does it do? When do you know if the hay is ready to rake into rows for the baler to pick up? I've seen rakes that are more like hay forks but semi-circular. Can you estimate how many bales a stand of hay will make? This is a real learning lesson for non-farmers I would think. I like that you included your grandchildren in the naming of this foal. Princess Bree Joy. That's a mouthful. She won't care what you call her as long as you don't call her late to dinner. Ha ha.

In the Great Lakes region its been a bit weird... we had days in the upper 70's in January/February then back to the 20's and 30's which a lot of my fruit bushes did not like. It "seemed" like March and April went from colder than normal and rainy to this week, in May, late summer. I'm not sure how my barley will turn out in my urban gardens. Anyway... The new filly was a boost and encouragement to me. Seeing the haying going on made me long to help horse powered friends which I hope to do.

I live in the Panhandle of Texas and we had been in a drought or long dry spell and we've been getting rain every evening and night for about a month. But our weather is always strange. We are so thankful finally for the rain. It's been a blessing indeed. Last year cattle ranchers were selling off their cattle, no hay or wheat hardly to feed them, Temps in the triple digits for 3 months , yes this rain is much wonderful.

Dandelions come up after larger amounts of rain and are a sign the land is souring because of that rain. Sweetening the soil will prevent most of them coming up again. Or you can let nature takes its course but it takes years to fix it naturally. Best to use some lime which is organically certified anyway. Using chicken manure and cow manure can help if it contains egg shells but will still take a couple years. Depends how important dandelion free hay is in your system. That is from my permaculture background. I'm glad you think you have settled on a name! Be interesting to see what the filly is called in a few weeks time. 😁

Lots of headed out dandelions. Around here that's usually a sign of soil calcium starting to drop. But then we get a lot more rain for longer time throughout the year than you. It makes the calcium "wash out". YMMV
