Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker was a pretty massive disappointment. And I love Star Wars. So in this four part series, I am going to rewrite Rise of Skywalker from the ground up in an attempt to create a more engaging and satisfying finale.
In Part One, we discuss the setup, the inciting incident, and we finish with the lock in.

Some stormtroopers showing humanity and then immediately getting gunned down by the heroes is already more solidly delivering on the moral complexities that The Force Awakens promised in scene one and then pretended didn't exist for the rest of the trilogy.

That is too true, Mike. But that didn't fit into Rion Johnson's vision of deconstruction, so he didn't use it. So many plot points that died on the vine...

Just imagining sitting in the theatre and watching Hux get executed in the first few minutes of the film is wild. To be honest, I feel like Hux and Phasma should have been given greater roles in the trilogy from the start but you can't change how they were used previously, and I think your use of both of them so far adds some meaning to their screen time.

@Yvaelle
@Yvaelle 3 жыл бұрын
I remember in the lead up to the Last Jedi, I fully expected to see Phasma lead the assault on the Resistance base herself, in a super competent fashion, as the "dark night of the soul" moment near the midpoint. Giving the resistance their major defeat, and then killing Phasma and Finn at the end of TLJ at the completion of their arcs. It could have been a really great way to give the First Order a meaningful, emotional victory - and the death of Phasma and Finn could have also been an impactful event at the end of TLJ.

Love where the potential arc is going for Finn. Finn deserves this. Poe already has sort of a weird bad taste from his (unknowingly) shooting the two defectors, so I hope that's resolved. Not much for Rey to do so far, but I'm sure that's 2nd and 3rd act stuff. "No, I'm busy," is pitch-perfect Kylo Ren writing.

The only rewrite the movie needs is to not listen to the fans and give her a backstory. She should just be a random Force sensitive that fell into being a part of the Skywalker story. Her story was basically that she's the Skywalkers' family therapist. She went through the movies interacting with them and trying to get them out of the dark hole they were in (mostly Luke and Ben on that last one). She shouldn't be a part of the Star Wars past (her family connection), but be the Jedi's future.

I agree with this in principle, but I think a rewrite of Episode 9 alone is also interesting in its own right. First, because it explores how much can be done right with the premise it starts out with. It's pulling together the tatters of Episode 7 and 8 and trying to build something interesting out of it, rather than starting with a blank sheet. It's a repair job, not a new design. Getting out of a mess rather than staying out of it. It's more fun to watch a rescue mission than somebody being safely transported from A to B. Secondly, because it doesn't deviate that far from what we actually got. I once watched a proposed rewrite of the prequel trilogy, and by the time it got to Episode 3 it was all rewrite built on rewrite and kind of hard to follow. A rewrite needs to be anchored in the original product to some degree, and the further back you place that anchor, the looser the other end of the story will be. I think it's easier to visualize and follow the rewritten story when it's so closely based on a premise we already know. In short, yes, the sequel trilogy probably should have been better written from the start, but that doesn't rob the Episode 9 rewrite of its entertainment value. It's just a different type of entertainment.

Hoping we get some good Rey/Kylo scenes. I loved the force bond scenes on TLJ, and the Rey and Kylo scenes were the best part of 9. It’s kinda weird that their relationship hasn’t come up yet. I feel like Rey should have to confront the idea of having to probably kill someone she wished to save, especially since that kinda parallels the Finn plot line. Also, hoping for more Kylo stuff in general since he’s the most interesting character in the trilogy, and even the among the best in the series as a whole.

I wrote my own ages ago, before RotS came out, and the first act involved all 6(?) Knights of Ren infiltrating the new Resistance base and, alerting as little people as possible, managed to pull off a reverse-SEAL TEAM 6 by successfully assassinating General Leia. This demonstrated the fearsome quality of the Knights and gives Rey, Finn and Poe motivation to drive through the rest of the film, but it also addressed the fact that Carrie Fisher died and what little footage they had of her could be naturally used as Force Ghost Leia instead of the lame and obvious green screen sequences in the film.

Can we get Nando's "Not Star Wars" theme on Spotify?

30:36 Slight nitpick here (not unlike your podcast Mostly Nitpicking check it out on Spotify) They are in evacuation mode so Poe shouldn't have time to chastise Ray here, for the moment he should just be glad that she has shown up and then they all leave. In their "inconspicuous ship escape" a bunch of them should get gunned down including one that has a tertiary character that we've seen a couple times and then you can use the fact that they had to wait for Ray to leave as a reason to create tension between the characters, and more of those "inner demons" you mentioned that will be explored in Act 2.

Nando I love the rewrite but the crawl has the correct, three-dot ellipses (...) when the crawls always end with an improper FOUR dotted ellipses.... 0 out of 10, ruined the star war

Weird that I was on the edge of my seat. When you gave Fin the beginning of an arc and touched on the themes of leaving the First Order, I smiled so much. He was wasted in all of these movies. Thanks.

Your re-writes and edits are always really great, well thought out and entertaining. It’s honestly refreshing to watch your videos, because they seem to really hone in on the characters both individually and in relationship with each other. But I think the sequel trilogy had two big problems: 1) Its core protagonist (Rey) had a very uneven hero’s journey that didn’t really fit with her own developed backstory or with the other two main Star Wars protagonists; and 2) Its broader conflict (the “so what?” of this trilogy) never really developed beyond TFA, which in turn prevented a more satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and saga. I think Episode IX really needed to address both the issues above, especially since the prior two films didn’t. Rather than introducing entirely new plots, it needed to resolve the ones set up, without retreading the same basic story that’s been told over the past two films. So, while there are some key changes I’d make to all the films (i.e., TFA is where the KOR needed to shine, and TLJ’s B plot needed to be entirely different), I think IX could have carried forward the following: A) Rey’s development as a Jedi and a hero, via her core trauma (abandonment) and typical Jedi struggle (with the dark side); B) Kylo’s efforts to secure his rule in an ascendant First Order, including his rivalry with Hux; and C) the larger, heretofore unaddressed question of why both the Jedi and the Rebel Alliance/Republic failed, and what is needed for a lasting peace. Again, I think some of these things should have been tackled in the previous films (TLJ in particular should have focused on much of this). But, hindsight and all. Also, I think this plot about the Resistance leadership being captured should have been the focus of TLJ’s B-plot instead of the Raddus plot.

I usually don't comment on any KZbin videos in general, but I have to let you know that this is my favourite kind of content. I love writing and creating my own stories so learning from creators like you and understanding how any story can be improved is truly inspiring. Also, your videos are so entertaining too! Hearing about these newly constructed stories is like I'm watching a new movie! I just had to let you know that. I've been enjoying your videos for a couple years now but, truly, thank you for what you do.
