It's funny that in Batman: Zero Year there's a flashback of an actual driving instructor (a brazilian criminal, I think) who really taught Bruce Wayne how to drive like a possessed maniac yet still in control.

I think if you expand West's to his TV show, he wins by a landslide. He's advising Robin on driving laws, he surrenders his car keys to law enforcement because he's not fit to drive, he even takes the time out of chasing a criminal to pay his parking fee. Sure he drives his car fast sometimes, but only in unoccupied areas, and makes sure to stay within the speed limit in urban areas.

Fun fact. The Lamborghini that Bruce Wayne drives in The Dark Knight is a Murcielago. Murcielago, although named after a famous bull, is Spanish for Bat. So technically it's still a Batmobile!

I gotta challenge the Damage rating on Batman: The Movie. That Batman went through extraordinary lengths to avoid collateral damage of any sort. He spends minutes with a burning bomb in his hands because he doesn't want to hurt any criminals, innocents, or ducks. "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!" Later he takes the time to pay the parking meter because it keeps the roads safe. There's no way that's "average damage."

I have a few nitpicks about this (not unlike your podcast, mostly nitpicking): 1. I’m pretty sure that turn in Batman 1989 is something to knock against bruce, but not for the reason you say. I’m 70% sure that that turn is not supposed to be made in that direction or at that speed. Because of the angle and the fact he was in a chase, and thus probably going over the speed limit, so i posit that he needed that hook to make the turn. However, on the other hand, hby turning there hes almost surely going against traffic, so that’s some points deducted in his awareness. 2. I personally would have given animated Batman a -2 in intangibles (or just deducting two points from his awareness total) for somehow not knowing how big the bat mobile is (has he been driving for a day???? What happened there, bruce?)

I'd like to add an addendum to your nitpicks Batman begins. Stating that bruce trained under the league of shadows and previously a criminal (though if he's stealing from himself,is he a criminal?) doesn't translate to him being skillful with driving are neither here or their. When Bruce disappears from Gotham, he was, I believe in college, unsure if he was somewhere between 17-21. If that's the case, even if he was in boarding school and 15-17 which highly doubt because bale was playing him, it's very safe to assume he learned how to drive at somepoint prior to this. The other thing is yes, it seems that the tumbler though a military vehicle is easy to drive and maneuver,though the rooftop driving is more needed with skill. Idk it bothered me that was nandos critique about begins.

I have just one gripe with the tech stuff. As Mythbusters demonstrated, it is very hard to time shooting a grappling hook from a fast moving car and hit a pile of beams to help make a turn. Judging that the grappling hook was used to allow the car to make a turn that it was otherwise going too fast to make makes him a better driver them most since the point of getting away is to go fast and not have to slow down for a turn. Saying using a tool or tech makes you a worse driver would be like saying that rally or drift car drivers are worse then other race car drivers because they use handbrakes and anti lag systems to help get them around a track faster.

I think it’s a weird point to say that Batman “usually uses his intelligence”, when most of the time he uses a gadgets like the grappling gun, batarang etc. to escape and solve scenarios. But when he uses equipment in the car it’s not? Batman is kinda built off the idea of using his equipment effectively. I feel like a lot of the reasoning here is off.

11:33 I'm not a huge car person, but not being able to outspeed someone isn't really your fault as a driver if your car is just slower than theirs. Certainly there's a margin where you can make up for that with skill and using the environment to your advantage, but there's only so far that gets you. If anything Batman using gadgets shows his savvyness as a driver, that makes up for the batmobile being slow... probably because it's weighed down by those gadgets

The car has a jet engine in most iterations, so movie/comic logic would suggest that it should basically be the fastest car in any scene. He also didn't say outspeed, he said outdrive. I think he's arguing that the batman that is able to fight better than everyone else and be prepared for any possibility should theoretically be able to dodge and weave and maze around the city to avoid most enemies and obstacles, without requiring too many extra gadgets, even if the car wasn't faster.

I would say that even though there's no explicit mention of this in Batman Begins that Bruce's time as a criminal probably included some sort of experience driving to get away from the police since he seems to be extremely comfortable doing exactly that in all three movies

Batman doesn't *need* to be a great driver. Batman needs to be a great fighter because he is either fighting some of the best fighters in the world or a *bunch* of thugs. Rarely, if ever, will Batman need to chase the greatest drivers, in a car. Really, all he needs is to be above average. As a motorsports driving instructor I can say this would not take long for a humble, focused, and determined driver with great hand eye coordination and reaction time as well as the means to rent out racetracks and hire the best instructors.
