great video, I would like to buy the fs 200 or 300 essentially for interviews, the sound produced by the fan noise could become a problem for my work?

Sorry, but these FS series is in NO way softer than the Forza series. I have worked in lighting for 40 years and these two lights are both technically point source emitters. To say the FS is softer is like saying a 6cm torch is softer than a 5cm torch. Put a reflector on them and the are close to identical in softness/Hardness, put a 60 cm softer on them and they are identical in softness. To say one is softer and because of this is better for one group or another is complete misinformation.

Thanks for watching the video and congratulations on your 40 years working in lighting. Technically your incorrect, the Forza range uses a ‘single’ COB. A simple google search will help you under what a ‘point source’ is .... I’ve copied the first line to help - ‘A point source is a single identifiable localised source of something’. Single being the key word in this conversation. Now the FS series uses a CSP ‘array’ ( chip scale package) being an array it means there are multiple and therefore this makes your statement incorrect. ‘These two lights are both technically point source emitters’. Incorrect. Your statement regarding putting ‘a reflector on them and the are close to identical softness/harness’ does have some logic ... by doing this you could argue they are then both ‘point source’ lights .... but the FS is still an ‘array’ of CSP chips just now shaped! because it’s never truly a single point of light and in fact multiple tiny weeny little lights it is therefore going to have overlaps which do make the FS a softer source compared to the single point source created by the Forza range. As an example if you took lots of 5cm torches and strapped them together and pointed then through a reflector and then compared them to one single torch what would be harder ?.... you could try to argue they will be the same but you know better than that with 40 years experience.... light travels in straight lights until it hits a surface and reflects (well actually it doesn’t really over long distances and in space light actually bends! Thats called gravitational lensing - we can discuss that another time).... Where was I??? Oh yea light travels in straight lines until it it’s a surface.... now because the FS range has an array these light beams will all be travelling at slightly different angles and will to keep it simple be scattered meaning when they are projected through the reflector they won’t be a single point of light so the scatter will cause the shadow to be softer ... unlike the Forza which will have a very hard shadow. Whilst we are here let’s make sure we all know what defines soft and hard light .... A point source of light casts only a simple shadow, called an "umbra". non-point or "extended" source of light, the shadow is divided into the umbra, penumbra, and antumbra.

@@LukeCurtis LOL, Happy for you to prove me wrong in a practical demo of the softness effect of the 4 inch array over the 3 inch COB.....Re your reply.... Penumbra's LOL

How does the Nanlite FS series compare to the Amaran and Godox SL series (including SL-150 II) in fan noise? I'm looking at the Nanlite FS-200 and Apurture Amaran 200d, and I'm not sure which has the quieter fan. Most reviews noted the Amaran 200d having a loud fan compared to the Amaran 100d.

Thanks for watching and asking , I gave t tested the aputure or godox but from what I understand all of these products perform similar as they are all aiming at being the most budget sensitive cob leds and I think with this in mind they will all produce more noise than the likes of say Forza as on this range you can switch the fans on and odd giving some control over the noise :-)

Is the Nanlite fs 300 LED AC Monolight going to be a great option for recording youtube videos? Or will the fan be to loud for situations like that?

@maxthomas1853 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this comparison. Since the FS series is AC powered will it flicker at high framerates, or is it still running off DC internally? The specs say "dimmable from 0 to 100% without flicker" but I haven't found anything about high speed shooting with it.
@maxthomas1853 жыл бұрын
Answering my own question if anyone is interested... I picked up an FS-300, doing a quick test up to 960fps I couldn't see any discernible flicker at 100% or 5% brightness, so these seem to be safe for reasonably high frame rates. Great light!

@@maxthomas185 Is the FS-300 too loud for talking heads?
@maxthomas1853 жыл бұрын
@@426Studios I shoot tabletop so not the best person to ask, but I would think in a totally controlled/quiet environment, you'll pick it up on the mic. Especially if you have a whole set of FS lights running. If there's any kind of background noise it will probably not be noticeable. I think it'd be easy to filter out if you had to, like HVAC noise in an office. I do think these are unbeatable for the price right now.

I don't understand why you think photographers woud want a softer, less adaptable monoblock when this enter form factor is derived from point source photography monolights.
