That's an interesting way to skin the cat! With the ability to watch the effect of each pass, you would become more accurate and precise with the same effort using the traditional method. I'm going to make a clone in the shop and try it out. Very cool take on sharpening.

It makes me think of a modern day "Sen". A traditional tool still used by some Japanese bladesmith's (for example Shigefusa). I personally will keep putting my knives on stones instead of using this thing though.

That’s exactly where I went. I was thinking the same thing.

Back in the days the Sinti people in germany used a steel plane for shaping sword and knife blades and also for thinning this could be used in the same way to thin kitchen knifes with a full flat grind, remove the Material with the coarse then take the deep scratches out with a finer grit and finaly use the Belt Grinder with the Scotch Brite belts for a nice Look.

Agreed! It’s gonna be interesting.

I have thought about this for the knifemaker to finish the bevels of super steel knives. Hand sanding the super steels, the steel just laughs at most of the conventional abrasives.

I think people will learn to use it in many ways. It’ll be interesting to see how innovative people take this and apply at.

A strange way to sharpen a knive, how do you keep the 'stone' at the same degrees. Sharpening on a stone my hands put the knive in a sort of memory grip and i have the right angle. Also make my day and do a video on the cheap knive removing the bolster :) many do it but never make a video out of it.

So this is just being figured out. The new one is coming out. I posted pictures of the new one on Instagram. I think the man himself is going to show us what to do.

One word for this......NOPE. And a few more words....if those diamond resin stones are already available for the Edge Pro, then why this thing? And if you don't have an edge pro, just like Greg here, you have to figure some way of clamping a blade down. Not too hard to do, but still. And then if you are not using the "rasp" in the traditional sharpening directions (like spine to edge), but rather dragging it down the blade as Greg has demonstrated here, I just can't imagine what that edge would actually end up like. I can change the cut bias when sharpening by changing the angle I approach the stone on my stroke, but dragging the blade down the edge is completely weird, like using those stupid draw through sharpeners with the carbide teeth. In addition, if using that draw technique like you are draw filing, then you would have to make sure that you are using the whole stone, and not just the middle. Much easier to use a whole stone with a more traditional spine to edge stroke. I just don't see this being a very good idea. I would put it this way, there is NOTHING about this that I like as a sharpener. Absolutely nothing.

So Hap Stanley, saw the video and wrote me personally. I didn’t put out new pictures of the new one on my Instagram. He has different uses. He also made it so the Stone is closer to the edge so you can see the edge. Thinning is one of the options for this device. He doesn’t know if it’ll be ready for Blade show. Also, you’re correct that on his website he says these stones are for the edge pro and his new device.
