Sundaram's soul was wandering (probably because he was murdered or died under mysterious circumstances) and got into James's body. After Sundaram's daughter served him food, (similar to shradh, where rice ball pindam is given to crows to let the soul have peace) his soul finds peace and slowly leaves James's body. 37:43 If you look at the wall where James walks out of the house, you can see his shadow is still there.

The movie is about the noon sleep (nanpagal neram) and the lucid dream Mammooty gets, and also its about the soul of Sundaram that found its fulfilment through the dream of Mammooty. In one of the last shot where he is sitting in the bus, you can see the shirt of the man who left the previous night with his wife in another vehicle, sitting there in the bus. Also Mammooty's expression when he is sitting in the bus is that of waking from a sleep session. The window sound that comes in between the movie where Mammooty is looking at the mirror, is the cue that they are still in the bus and it is a deep sleep dream. The dog that follows the bus in the last scene, is an indication of how it sensed the soul of Sundaram in Mammooty. The crows that is shown in the final climax shots are indications of 'Shraadham' (the final rites), where crows are given food for the fulfilment of a departed soul. The noon sleep is well depicted, because I personally have experienced the noon sleep to be very deep and lucid, for it looks so real that I have got confused many times when I wake up on which is the dream and which is reality. The movie is multidimensional in structure and depiction. It is ethereal, surreal and spiritual in nature. Kudos to LJP for pulling this complex subject so effortlessly.
