Congratulations on your hard work. Some backstory about the chest @15:03. This is probably a "hope chest" (sv. Brudkista) which was traditionally given to unmarried women. They later brought this chest and its content to their new home, once they got married. It usually contained household items and linens (often woven by themselves, with an embroidered monogram as a finishing touch). If it's a brudkista you'll often find initials, and a year/date written somewhere on the chest. The date either represents the time of birth or time of marriage. Same model, but reinforced, was later used during the big emigration to US. Then often called "the emigrant trunk" (sv. Amerikakoffert/Amerikakista). About 25% of all Swedes (1.5M) decided to leave for a better life across the Atlantic between the years ~1860-1920. One of the main drivers was the discrimination that followed after the great famine 1867-1869. Even though some of these chests have made their way back home to Sweden, it's more likely to find them in the U.S.

Noticed that the snow is sliding off your roof, suggests that you are loosing heat through the roof and need to improve the insulation. As for the candles, when I first moved to Sweden I noticed that whenever we visited someone's house they first lit at least one candle and placed it on a coffee table and then put the coffee on. I wondered if they were expecting power cuts but eventually came to realise this is just a Swedish sign of welcome and wanting the house to feel cosy. 😊
@aasphaltmueller51783 жыл бұрын
older houses often have a sub optimal isolated roof, and as it's a real big job to isolate it, this is usually left for a bigger necesarry roof repair or recladding; which does not mean that jack shold not have a look into it
@Telindra3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I concur, they should have someone come out there and have a look at their attic to check the status of the insulation and the inside of the roof. There might be some fairly simple and cheap actions they can take in order to increase the roofs insulation overall.
@lorrainehinchliffe53713 жыл бұрын
Lovely custom! Here in Canada it’s the same concern if the snow melts on your roof. Means your loosing heat.
@proyouservicesltd36523 жыл бұрын
Right. I am not surprised; when they were ripping wallpaper from the ceiling, to expose the wooden panelling, it occurred to me that the wallpaper was likey laid on the ceiling to retain minimise heat loss via the roof.

Love your videos. Thought about something on your house. I don't know if anyone has said that it seems like the roof lacks insulation because it seems like the heat goes out through it. Normally if the roof is adequately insulated the snow would remain on the roof until the sun melts it away but on your house it seems to slip off or melt away anyway. I don't know if this remark helps you in anyway but it's only my thoughts.... When you are driving up to the garage you shouldn't let the car spin its wheels, carefully let it slowly drag itself up :) when it starts spinning leave the throttle directly and don't rev up! We don't usually salt the driveway at all, only critical places like the steps of the outside stairs. Regarding the snowblower and that it takes the gravel and grass, when you get a bit more snow the ground will be the snow itself and cover both grass and gravel. Then you only will take the snow away. Anyone agrees with me - or disagrees? :) Love all of what you have done so far. Good luck in the future!!
