Watch our Napoleon review. Napoleon, reviewed by A.A. Dowd. Narrated by Ronny Barrier.
Ridley Scott returns to the old-world battlefields and feudal intrigue of his Oscar-winning Gladiator with a decades-spanning biopic of the French tactician who conquered half of Europe. As a historical epic, Napoleon is handsome but a little impersonal - you can really feel the absence of texture lost in getting it down under three hours. But between the textbook bullet points, a very funny anti-Great Man biopic peeks through, thanks largely to Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as a Bonaparte who’s more boy than man.

The Napoleon complex referenced so many times in this review is untrue. Napoleon was above average in height at the time. It was cartoonists who made him short and it just stuck on.

I'm glad to hear they didn't make a big thing out of his height, because he was normal/average height. It's more weird to me that the person tasked to review the movie seems to be under the impression that he was regularly made fun of for being short, when he wasn't.

"You just can't cut [an hour and a half] out of a movie without harming it." The theatrical release of Return of the King is an hour shorter than the extended edition, and it didn't harm the film which is already a bum-numbing 200 minutes. A British director or producer would never portray Napoleon as a great man. Napeleon usually is the butt of all jokes in most portrayals of him in in tv shows, comedies or old hearsay. If not a joke then either a deeply flawed or peculiar individual. He remains a nemesis of the British in one form or another so don't expect a fair and balanced portrayal of him.

Who would have thought, an Englishman made a movie trashing Napoleon? Haha That being said, regardless of how reductionist, anti-French or one-sided it might be, the critique of a "great man figure" in history can be welcomed (Don't imagine anyone trying to make such a critique with Alexander the Great or Caesar, so Napoleon fits the part). However, it seems like it might be convoluted. Maybe the 4hr Director's Cut could be better?

"Little men inflicting their inadequacy on the world" Not only playing into the historical lie that Napoleon was 'small' (physically or otherwise), but tacitly accepting the notion that a man has to remain in his station if he isn't already born into an important family. Historical inaccuracies, mumbled dialogue, and too short. One movie can't do this man justice.

Cant call this movie a historical, its such shame and waste of my time, the title should've been "Relationship between Napoleon and Josephine"

There Was African Haitian General That Defeated Napoleon in Real Life But They Rejected Him Because He Defeated Napoleon The Story Sounds Epic Why They Don’t put This in The Movie 🔥🔥🔥🔥

This film seems as if someone saw a portrait of Napoleon and attempted to mold a character based solely on that portrait, half the movie the main character even presents like a portrait. Napoleon was known to be an enormously charismatic character that easily garnered the loyalty of those around him. as a result.

The second wave comes out of the... trenches at the battle of Austerlitz... Napoleon leads (???) a cavalry charge at Borodino. Ridley Scott's Napoleon: where 1917 meets the charge of the Rohirrim (Lord of the Rings) and where a series of silly and historically inaccurate vignettes is served up as a some sort of a "vision". You were not there either Ridley Scott nor have you read much on the subject.
