Come to think of it, that's true. Line tactics with masses of people slowly walking toward each other and discharging their firearms at point blanks... Remember "Patriot" or "Barry Lindon"? Sometimes I shouted at screen while watching them: "Fucking go prone, you make it 10 times less likely to be blown off! Or use some kind of portable wooden cover against slugs!" No, it would be considered dishonourable. Getting your face torn off by a slug is, of course, very honourable and noble.

1:08:30 The French cavalry start running sideways. They're just sliding along the ground, facing a completely different direction to where they're actually going. How embarrassing. They do realise they're in Napoleon total war right, not Shogun 1?
@bladfadsfblaadsfsadf9007 жыл бұрын
Caesar Salad Yeah, I've noticed that even with graphically more impressive titles like Attila even on ultra. You can't adjust view distance so it basically just has a stagnant unit skin slide across the screen at a certain distance. But in Napoleon and Empire, it's a hell of a lot more prominent.

line battleship tottaly makes sense in this time period, it allow the most damaged ship to hide behind his allies to retrat or take care of whatever problem it encounter, it's also easier to keep track of what's going on for the admiral.
@Floris_VI Жыл бұрын
Not to mention nearly all guns are on the side of the ship, its best for offense and defense, legends just has/had no clue about naval warfare

Hello , Thx for making time for this videos on NTW. I just loveeee this game !
@Sthriga17 жыл бұрын
Free Poland, if not for yourself do it for madame Walewska!
A line always works better since it gives time for the ships to reload before it gets into engagement again + it takes less damage on the same front. 1 ship fires and lets the one behind him to get in position to fire on the same ship. = faster focus fire rate = less enemy cannons firing on you = less losses = victory. It increases efficiency and damage output by using focused tactics. The only way to match such an efficient offensive tactic is to match it with another line tactic. Better tech and long range weapons like rockets and missiles made such tactics obsolete but before those technologies those line tactics were the best and they proved it.
@Rubadubdub427 жыл бұрын
Although I love this time period, I wholeheartedly agree that the AI and overall mechanics are shit in this game. I use Napoleonic Total War 3 which fixes it up a little, but I still think if I wasn't so obsessed with this time period I wouldn't pay two cents for this game.
@napowolf7 жыл бұрын
If NTW is shit, then I can hardly imagine what ETW would amount to.

I love the time period as well and the warfare i gave NTW a shot man it was shite thats the end of that lol
@Rubadubdub427 жыл бұрын
again, I love the time period but mechanics r kind of shitty. I did like the big scale of ETW tho and it was ok with darthmod
@napowolf7 жыл бұрын
But the vanilla ETW is downright broken. You can't bring up the mods when comparing the two.
@napowolf7 жыл бұрын
Mechanic wise the two are nearly identical. If NTW is shit, then so is ETW. If anything, ETW mechanisms are more barebones. No attrition and 2 turns per year. CA should've patch ETW to the state NTW is in. Instead they just leave the game to rot.

Fall of the Samurai is the better fire arms based Total War. Just a shame there's so much that is wonky in both Empire and Napoleon as Empire had some good ideas for Total War but was never finished

Oh yes the rifle fire from the elite infantry is so satisfying. Though the Gatling guns and artillery had the issue of always shooting to the sides of the units instead of center

FoTs is lame af because who gets first volley wins 99%. No tactics. Also, arty is godlike.
@Mao-qp6rd7 жыл бұрын
At least the arty doesn't have unlimited ammo. Your also speaking about a time when artillery was beginning to advance so yeah the arty is going to be bloody good.
@ivvan4977 жыл бұрын
Because of arty game is crap, also guns are too accurate and fire to fast for any tactics. At least in NTW you can take a volley and still come on top.
@Mao-qp6rd7 жыл бұрын
FOTS is about 50 years later I think. Artillery advanced a lot in the 19th century. The artillery is balanced enough considering there is no horse artillery, limited ammo and that they are really expensive unlike in NTW. The shells in FOTS are explosive as well so that's another reason why they do even more damage.
@stephenhartley28536 жыл бұрын
personally i think the not choosing the weather is better and more realistic. also adds some needed challenge considering you wiped out the british in about 20 turns. also on the naval battles i feel its better to start with regular shot as the first few volleys are never going to sink anything but they will take out some cannons meaning you can then chain shot more effectively and then grape shot in relative safety
@TimmyTeller31157 жыл бұрын
Steep slope of the massive hill was causing the cannons to aim far to low, but hey sometimes it just works anyway.

@jba.93856 жыл бұрын
infantry had to shoot in lines because firearms were so inacurate in this time that the only chance to actually inflict serious damage to the enemy was, to to hit them with a concentrated volley. it may seem stupid at first but if it wasn´t effective nt every army of the time would have done it
@elliotyourarobot Жыл бұрын
Also the majority of men would unconsciously try to miss when firing at human targets, such as aim slightly away from the target or blink when firing. Also firing in a large group provided the men with some plausible deniability when the enemy dies.

If it helps, knowing centi, milli, deci, deca, kilo and hecto is a core part of american high school education. Though most only remember maybe 4 or 5 of those for any length of time, depending on the teacher. What bugs me about metric users is the ones who thing kilos measures weight. It's not like it's an obscure fact that kilos dont measure weight like it is in imperial that slugs measure mass.
@twoshedsjackson64786 жыл бұрын
They fought in lines because their weaponry was so inaccurate they only way they could hit anything was to concentrate their fire. Once rifling was invented,they stopped.

Lol I understand why you don’t get the 1700’s style of war. But I think the the guns were way more inaccurate and the armies way bigger, like the brits had 100s of warships and the French mustered half a million troops for its doomed Russia campaign. The battle lines stretched for perhaps a mile or so. Tens of thousands of men. The game doesn’t really do it justice.

I felt this game was more faction locked as far as troop choices went. France had great artillery so theirs is pretty easy to level up to get accuracy. I felt like Prussia had the only land troops worth anything. Stuff like that helped me enjoy this game. I liked empire because there were so many regions and so much trade. Also, the independence campaign was great for me personally, as an American. And really, they're all broken a little. That's part of the game, at this point

muskets were actually pretty accurate. it was just better for maneuvering and giving orders, what with no radios or phones. thats why there were also distinctly colored uniforms and flag bearers, which may seem strange to us today, but it was so a commander could see his men through the smoke and flags were for rallying.

Legend, I feel you might have more respect for the naval strategies of the day if you understood more of them. The straight line thing is sort of stupid - but it can leave things open to split up units and destroy both, or even exploiting another line by Crossing the T. Granted, I am not sure how these might work with the Napoleon mechanics, even though the great admirals of the day used them to great success.
