Robespierre was ideological and rigid, so despite his better intentions, he was a less capable leader. Napoleon was used to adapting to situations and was much more pragmatic, which despite his less benevolent intentions, actually served the people of France better than Robespierre ever could.

Robespierre never led France though. The convention did, all he could do is if 11 other people agreed he could arrest anyone he wanted. How is he better??

@@bramobin He ended the Republic but he didn't get rid of the revolutionary ideals. His civil and criminal law, income tax and uniform metric weights and measures were adopted by most of Europe. He brought back slavery in the colonies but he also later abolished it. He helped the Jewish populations across Europe (so much so that he was being called the anti-Christ by the Orthodox Church) Yeah, I really can't defend the women's rights thing. He didn't massacre an entire generation of French young men, the coalition did. They declared war on France. Britain funded most of the wars against France and refused to negotiate. When Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of the French he did not declare war on the other European powers. He crowned himself king of Italy yes but France won that territory in the revolutionary wars. Napoleon didn't engage in offensive wars until the continental powers of Prussia and Austria were finally subdued. His invasion of Spain and Portugal and Russia were offensive wars but again, that was to force Britain to the negotiating table. He never dissolved the states of his enemies and gave very generous peace terms. He created the duchy of Warsaw as a compromise to allow the Poles a state without antagonizing Russia too much. Robespierre was not a military leader, he was a political leader Meanwhile Napoleon was a military leader So you can’t compare both and say one was a leader better than the other Also robespierre was never president of the republic, he was just an influential politician. And Napoleon was a jacobin supported Robespierre and was a friend of the brother of Robespierre. Napoleon said Robespierre was the scapegoat of the terror and he was not really the master of the terror like the thermidorien propaganda says. If you read history very well and precisely, you will understand what I mean. At the fall of Robespierre, Napoleon was imprisoned. Napoleon was the one who ordered the massacre of the royalists during the battle of Toulon and also during the time where he saved the senate from a royalist insurrection by using canons against the royalist mobs.

As a fan of the Napoleonic wars, I remember that despite being self-centered, Napoleon did let others shine and gave them plenty of opportunities. I hope the film also touches on certain points like Napoleon losing almost all of his best friends during the war; Lannes, Bessieres, Murat and Desaix for example. I think the film's problem will be giving too much importance to the relationship between napoleon and josephina, despite being complex, the story of both was not that interesting and she didnt possess much influence on him. There are a lot of interesting characters in this time and I hope they try to give some screen time to them.

What’s most interesting to me about Napoleon is that he proved two things; that with great ambition and a strong drive for glory anyone can achieve great success, but those same qualities will make you your own worst enemy. His ambition was his downfall; if he didn’t over extended himself in Spain, enforce the continental system and invade Russia, no one would have stopped him. It took seven coalitions of europes great powers to permanently bring him down, only after he weakened himself. He’s an example of why meritocracy is best, but everyone must have their limits.

Thanks Elle. I have been a student of Napoleonic history since I was a child and have read many books and historical articles on the subject over 40 years. Joining the dots, the real Napoleon was not a tyrant but originally a reluctant nationalist, similar in many ways to George Washington in his character. That is, he had contempt for royalist tyranny, elitism and class division. He valued chivalry, the protection of women and children and was a man of honor. His men loved him because he treated them not as servants but as important assets and mingled with them, listening to their needs. In many ways he was a modern leader, placing his ego below the welfare of his men. In battle he was totally ruthless but never cruel to prisoners. His weakness was that he trusted too many people and lost at Waterloo not only because of the weather, but because he was betrayed to the Prussians by a fellow Frenchman who revealed his army's exact position. He surrendered early in the battle to Wellington because he knew it was over when the Prussians arrived and he knew Wellington would treat his men fairly, unlike the vicious Prussians who butchered their prisoners. Wellington later in life became pen-friends with an imprisoned Napoleon. He was painted by the royalists as a madman but everything he did was for the glory of his country.

- Yes, Napoleon was Corsican (so basically Italian) but was a French citizen. - He wasn't short but average height for the time. British propaganda, the differences in British and French measurements, and the fact that he was always portrayed with his guard and grenadier units (the tallest men in the army) played a role in this idea - Most of Napoleon's wars were defensive but his invasion of Spain, Portugal and Russia were not, and he would would also break several guarantees made in treaties. He had a thirst for conquest as well. - He had great domestic policies regarding the law code, having merit matter more than class status and anti-corruption and bringing stability to the country but he also restricted women's rights and brought back slavery in France's colonies (though there is context in the latter). - His conquests did result in the deaths of millions but he did spread the ideas of the French (and really American Revolution) across Europe. All in all, a controversial figure and one people will always have a strong opinion on. In terms of the actual movie I will say it doesn't need to be historically accurate but rather historically immersive and authentic. The brilliant series Rome is historically immersive and authentic (one of my favorite scenes is a short portrayal of how the Romans would have actually fought) but accuracy isn't that high. Everybody speaks English, characters are made up or omitted or their roles exaggerated or minimized, the timeline of events is shortened, etc. Movie examples of what I'm talking about can be found in The Patriot, Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, all not particularly accurate but quite immersive and authentic and brilliant films.

I beg to disagree that Napoleon is only driven by success and glory and have no utter care on his people. There’s this documented story of a boy and his surgeon father in his 1812 Russian Campaign which ended disastrous ly on his Grand Armee which is more than 600k and not more than 30,000 made it back alive in Paris. In the road going to Moscow he saw this military surgeon of his with a boy beside him and he curiously asked the surgeon what is a boy not more than 12 years old doing here, the surgeon said he is my son and nobody will take care of him for he just lost his mother recently thats why he’s with me. Fast forward when he returned home in Paris after this disastrous campaign in Moscow he inquired about that boy, his aide de camp said that the boy made it back in Paris but his father didn’t. So he ordered his aide de camp to make sure that boy received a monthly stipend some sort of retirement allowance from the Government due to his father’s military service and that he has to make sure that the boy can finished his education up to college and if he deemed to can do so finished his medical studies like his father. Maybe there will be an extended version on Apple tv one day, I hope. Ridley Scott's Gladiator was a specific story that could be contained in 2 or so hours. I think there might be a problem like Oliver Stone had with "Alexander", where he tried to tell the life of Alexander the Great in 2 1/2 hours. It's just not enough time. Now, if this is Napoleon 's rise and his few years of power, I can understand that. And it looks like that's what this is. Either way, I want to see this film, and it looks like a success!

Napoleon is still so famous today because he was a lot more than a military genius and a tyrant. He was a really, really complex figure. He was probably the greatest general in history, for sure. But he also brought stability to Revolutionary France, and defeated the counter-revolutionary forces of the monarchies sent against him. He was inspire by the ideals of the Revolution. He passed many reforms, swept away the remnants of feudalism wherever his armies marched, emancipated the Jews, and instituted the Napoleonic Code, which is still the basis for civil law in many European countries and around the world. Most of the deaths caused by his wars were the result of the British being unable to tolerate an upstart from minor Corsican nobility ruling the most powerful country in Europe, so they kept funding coalition after coalition to go after him. He had to keep fighting. For a long time, Napoleon was celebrated in France. But eventually, the power went to his head, and he lost his sense of limits, if he ever had any. The invasion of Spain was ridiculous, the invasion of Russia was insane. The population of France tired of the endless conscription and the endless wars and his refusal to make peace even when he was on the back foot and retreating, and finally deposed him in 1814. He amazingly came back in 1815 for a last hurrah, but French opinion was divided, and he succeeded in the Hundred Days for as long as he did because the restored Bourbons managed to make themselves very unpopular very quickly. But the jig was up. I actually wish he'd managed to escape to America instead of ending his days on St. Helena, but his ego got to him there too, and he had to make a grand gesture of surrendering instead of fleeing when he had the chance.

This movie WILL NOT detail his ties to the Grand Orient/Egyptian Rite Masons, Martinists, Kabbalist/Sabbatean Frankists and revolutionary Illuminati cells who collectively controlled his army and who, together with the Grand Lodge of London/Rothschild Dynasty, orchestrated the Napoleonic wars and ultimately betrayed him and caused his downfall. If Ridley Scott has the balls to even mention THE GRAND ORIENT DE FRANCE, the true power behind Napoleons rise (and fall), he will go down in history as the greatest Director of all time.

They have already announced a two hour something theatrical release along with a FOUR hour directors cut. Ridley has done it again for me, I just wish they’d let him make the movie. I thought the quote was, I found the crown of France in the gutter and…… I PICKED IT UP.

I hope this is good. It feels like they are trying to cram in too much scope in a 2 hourish movie. Yup Grapeshot the crowd. It is interesting that the French Directory tried to get rid of their more ambitious (successful generals) by sending them out perhaps to die, as Napoleon was sent out to Egypt in 1798 and General Lazare Hoche to Ireland in 1796. Napoleon returned from Egypt, abandoning his army, to overthrow the Directory in a coup in 1799.

As a historian myself, I have found that French historians are far more forgiving of Robespierre, St. Just, Danton, and other figures of the revolution, especially those of the montagnard, than they are of Bonaparte. Do you think that is accurate? From an outsider perspective it makes little sense to see men like Robespierre as well-intentioned but unable to steer the ship of state rather than a petty ideologically possessed tyrant that lacked the political savvy to deal with his enemies with anything other than the guillotine. I just finished a biography of Robespierre and I like him more now than I used to, at least who he was when it all started and where he came from. But still, French historians seem to have a real soft spot for these men whose failure to bring about the ideals of the revolution in the same way say the American or Dutch Republicans did cast such a long shadow over French history.
@ElleHistory Жыл бұрын
It’s a very good and legitimate question. Personally I don’t think French historians love Robespierre that much but I think there is a tendency to understand his background and some romanticism around his younger years yes. For many he completely lost the plot and was a tyrant. I mean he’s responsible for so many deaths and the things he wrote are absolutely shocking and so close to absolute monarchy and absolute power. Anyway, thanks for sharing your views and asking the question!

I really think this is actually a shallow not deep view of history(part of the whole wave of "no one is good man in history" trying to critise/contervsialize all historic leaders).Napoleon is character with faults yet a hero in so many things,some of them well known some less but just as important,and all come from the ideas he brought with him to Europe...(Enlightenment and Nationlism),just one small yet crucial thing to world history,if not for Napoleon Jewish emancipation as we know it worldwide maybe would have never been a thing(as been for hundreds of years,as it was politically advantageous for both for the Rabbis and leaders of the countries to keep Jews seperated and in abject povery.Even in modern times the Romania revolution which was liberal revolution specifically excluded Jews out of emancipation,it was international pressure from emancipated Europe that pushed back,same with Russian pogroms and how did they stopped),the fact that the entire modern Jewish world with independent life,secular education,liberty qll comes back to Napoleon's conquests.

Napoleon is the embodiment of the Hegelian dialectic.
@nevermore935 Жыл бұрын
It’s ironic that you would say that since Napoleon was an initiate in the Egyptian Rite with strong ties to the Grand Orient. Napoleons ties to the Ismaili-Sufi-Kabbalist Order in Egypt (known in Freemasonry as the “Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor”) gave birth to many Masonic rites including the Rite of Memphis (co-founded by the Egyptian Samir al-Younis or “Samuel Honis” an initiate in the Egyptian Ismaili-Sufi-Kabbalist Order and French/Egyptian Isis Lodge of Cairo or La Loge Isis) and Rite of Misraïm (founded by Marc Bédarride an “Egyptologist” and “Orientalist” in Napoleon’s army in Egypt and a known Kabbalist Sabbatean Frankist posing as A “Sephardi Jew” and also an initiate in the French/Egyptian Isis Lodge of Cairo). These rites possessed an ideology of infiltration and subversion. In other words, infiltrating ideological groups (political, religious etc.), radicalizing a minority within that group to create a clash of two opposing ideologies resulting in the (forced) “liberalization” of the ideology aka the “Hegelian Dialectic”. This is how ALL civil conflicts (political/religious/class/racial etc.) have been orchestrated, promoted and exploited for centuries. The European anti-Monarchical, anti-Catholic/Holy Alliance revolutions in the 1800’s which ultimately shaped modern day Europe and established the constitutional monarchical and democratic/parliamentary reforms were orchestrated by the revolutionary network associated with these rites and included the Grand Orient of Italy, the Illuminati “Philalèthes” cells, the Rite of Memphis lodges, the Supreme Order of Misraïm, the Sublimes Maîtres Parfaits, the Alta Vendita, the Carbonari cells etc

Bought years ago a book about German empress life’s, as we say in Germany Every powerful man is backed by a powerful woman! I wish you would cover some German women in the future! My suggestion to start with are, Judith of Bavaria who died in 843, Empress Theophanu, Hildegard of Bingen, Maria of Burgundy, Empress Maria Theresia. The Nazis may misused her Name for the 22 Division of the armed SS. It’s often reported the honor tile was Maria Theresia, but this honor title is never named in any historical nazi document. The 22. SS Division was made up of Hungarians and Germans born in Hungary. Another interesting German female is Victoria, the last empress of Germany. Ordinary person Melitta Benz. It should be well known, including English speaking Audience also.

I loved "Gladiator" with Joaquin Phoenix as Emperor Commodus ("I am vexed!"), and from the look of the trailer "Napoleon" will be every bit as compelling. That said, I myself will be more than a little vexed if Napoleon is made out to be a heroic figure as opposed to an egotistical monster and slave to his own ambition. I don't think that'll happen, though. Joaquin Phoenix is a fantastic actor and great at portraying monsters. I also love the look of the film--gorgeous sets and cinematography from what I can see. Definitely looking forward to it, though not as much as I am looking forward to "Firebrand" with Alicia Vikander and Jude Law as Katherine Parr and Henry VIII. As a French, travelling abroad made me realise how controversial Napoleon actually was. In French school, we mostly learn about his military victories, his opposition to European Monarchies and his contribution to the rule of law, with all the legal codes established by his administration and still in use today. For the rest of Europe, he was a conqueror that led to the death of hundreds of thousands of people. It will be interesting to see how the movie finds its way through those opposing narratives. The trailer is at least promising in that respect!

Tyrant is relative. Compared to Robespiere and The Directory? Who were executing people in masses. He improved life for most people over the monarchy. His chief failing was towards black people, which is shameful but he was hardly a terror for most French people. He crowned himself instead of letting the Catholic Church do so, which were attempting to exert itself. He had visions. It wasn't simply a matter of power and ambition for him. As far as political ideology goes, he was a Dantonist.

Of course Bonaparte was such a tyrant that France was a wonderful and lovely place to live under the rule of the beloved Bourbon monarchy that put so much time into the care and well being of its citizens. I think not. Bonaparte was no more a tyrant than other empire building nations with their monarchies during this period of history. ALL of the leaders were as bad / good as each other at this point in European history, continuing to apply the aggressive expansionist policies that nations had persisted with for many years prior to Bonaparte. After Bonapartes demise such practises did not immediately cease. I always struggle with "historians" that apply 2023 morals to actions that occurred over 200 years ago. Empire building was quite normal 200 years ago, but many "historians" vilify Bonaparte and praise other leaders as almost pure. You ask if the movie will be historically accurate? Well, I am of the opinion that the trailer already displays inaccuracies, but that is no surprise, it's a movie after all. A complex period of history which can never be properly explored with a few superficial comments on the back of a movie trailer. I am looking forward to seeing the movie.

I disagree about Napoleon's tyranny being compared to Robespierre's Napoleon had much more respect towards his enemies and rivals and wouldn't have accused them of things which they're not because it's easier! and in some of his letters to Joseph you can see that he actually looked down upon the view which Jacobins had on Louis XVI, because he believed if the king was truly the tyrant they say he was, none of them, including Napoleon wouldn't even have been in the position which they were. he also had much nicer things to say about Marie Antoinette and unlike Robespierre, he was against the behavior of Paris mob because uncivilized behavior, lack of manners was one of the things he despised the most. and he also had the honor to say that Royalists or Émigrés despite being his enemies, were brave and determined enough which is what he respects them for, which we all know these people under Robespierre or other Jacobins would've been called traitors or tyrant or...(you know) and wouldn't even get final respect as human beings. and Napoleon usually would banish his archenemies inside France, while we all know if they were under the Terror, they would've been decapitated for the 40s time! and you really had to get on on Napoleon's bad side to actually show ruthlessness, not for no reason
