there's something cool about being born in the 80s and growing up with the internet when it was slow and didn't have all the features it has today and then seeing how it evolved over the next 20 years

Musicians should be honored that millions of people would be willing to download their music and be willing to listen to it. By letting people listen to their music, they can live on in people's minds well after they're dead. Be thankful.

The money they can make from ads before their songs play and in concerts should be plenty... if they're liked by enough people.
@MattSezer
@MattSezer 8 жыл бұрын
Somebody on the internet saying it "should be plenty" doesn't make it true. Streaming revenue is fractions of pennies. A million views on KZbin will barely pay for a month's living expenses. Yes, if you're really popular, then you can still make money, but what if you're not extremely popular? Before, independent artists with niche followings could make decent livings, but now they're either forced to compromise their art to become more popular or be broke. And before you say they should do it for the love of it, in many cases they do. However, if you're working a full-time day job, you can't focus on your art as much and the end product suffers. It was ridiculous for the industry to expect people to pay close to $20 for CDs and not embrace digital technology until everybody was already doing it illegally. However, that doesn't justify not paying for something you otherwise would have bought.

$18 CD's is what led to Napster.
@saysthemanbehindthemask
@saysthemanbehindthemask 5 жыл бұрын
seriously? So let's say an album has 9 songs which normally it has more... but as an example 9 songs in an album. Which makes each song cost $2. If you buy coffee for example in Starbucks your cup of coffee costs more than a song! You think it's as easy to write a song a it is to make a cup of coffee? I hope you don't and i hope you don't think that a cup of coffee is worth more than an actual song. Now think for a second if the current state of music is fair towards a good musician. This is one of the reasons mainstream music sucks so bad, because a lot actually talented musicians are not being given a fair chance. Masses prefer to have shit poured into their ears with lyrics that mean nothing and go " Oh oh , Ah Ah" instead of writing real lyrics.

@@saysthemanbehindthemask musicians weren't getting their fair share... they used to get 1$ per album sold. Nowadays, artist make money on shows... this is why there's so many mixtapes and singles out there. As for mainstream music, it sucks because it became too easy to produce... you just need a macbook pro and very few basic knowledge and the program does it all for you.
@saysthemanbehindthemask
@saysthemanbehindthemask 5 жыл бұрын
Well even if an entire band gets a dollar per record sold 1m records is a 1m dollars! That’s not a small sum. Also you are wrong. It really depended on a record deal it varies from act to act. For example Drummer and a songwriter of the same band usually do not get paid the same amount. It’s a little more complex than just getting a buck for record sold. Live shows were always there and I believe live shows were more in demand than today, because there was no internet so it was a lot harder to see a live show apart from actually being at the show or only on TV. But now you find out a band is with their new tour cycle you will most likely find the entire set on YT. It happened to me several times that I watched a show online than went to see them live and it was basically the same thing. So it’s less likely people will go to see a live show when they can see it for free once again in comfort of their home. My point is live shows were always there so were endorsements of all sorts PLUS record sales so I don’t really see the point you are trying to make. Mixtapes and singles are out because people don’t buy albums anymore! There is no need for an entire album when you can download only the songs you like. There is no connection to live shows whatsoever. Regarding self produced music yes it’s true techically anyone can make music, upload online and have it exposed to millions of potential listeners, but because it’s so simple million’s of people do it around the world which creates a huge pool of information and huge competition, so the good stuff gets lost in all that noise. And it’s a shame because there are a lot of great artists there that will never be heard because of the volume of information that is being pumped into the web. I don’t think you got the point of my original comment
@kendrick10601
@kendrick10601 5 жыл бұрын
@@saysthemanbehindthemask But how many band / artist used to sell 1m record? Again, a tiny minority. ''Sales'' didn't dissapear as you make it seem... they were just replaced by streams. Now, say you produced an album of 10 song, you used to get 1$ per album sold, so 0,1c per songs. Well Tidal offers 0,01 per stream, spotify 0,004 and apple music 0,007... with tidal you bet that someone will listen the song 10x, spotify 25x and apple 14x. As for live shows... a ticket cost way more now than before even when you adjust the price for inflation. A ''ok'' ticket for a Drake concert is atleast 100$. Yes he is sold out every year U2 earned $54 million this year, from those 52 came from live shows globalnews.ca/news/4351915/alan-cross-how-musicians-make-money/ . Drake and the migos did 79 millions with 54 showcase... and this is just north america. Nowadays you have a higher buying power in developing countries, if they know their artist might no come for 2-3 years, they spend the money to see him/her live regardless.

Napster was the only one chance the companies had to control piracy because they were the ones who brought together all the pirate-customers in the world. Just a little bit of intelligence, smart moves, would have been enough to register everyone in the world and offer them a better deal. That way both parties would have won. The anger afterwards just made nerds slash back! Lives and big opportunities destroyed because of greed, fear and shortsightedness

You can't blame Napster. It was the equivalent of taking an album you purchased over to a friend's house and letting them borrow it, only streamlined. The ones that should be scrutinized is the programmers who write the programs that allow a person to rip cds to a computer. I think most artist had the perception that the mp3s were on Napsters server.

Yes and no. I kind of do, but I really enjoy using sound files like MP3 & WAV & a few others. I learned a lot about them, through day-to-day use. And I still occasionally buy CDs, both because I want to support artists, and because I like to have everything that comes with a CD (booklet, pictures, lyrics, etc.). I know some of that can also be gotten by downloading it, but some of it cannot, and the effort isn't really worth it. Besides, a nice CD package cannot REALLY be duplicated by downloading it from the Internet.
