#startups #Slidebean #Napster
If you’re in your early twenties or younger, Napster probably looks just like another music app, another competitor for Spotify or Apple Music.
And if you're in your early thirties, or older, you probably didn't know that Napster still existed. But of course, it is nothing like it was back in 1999.
Back then, Napster was wild and it blew the horns of change for the music industry. With the Internet opening up to the world in the nineties, it was bound to happen. Music was just another industry that was getting completely disrupted by the dot com craziness.

I am so old I made music compilations on cassette tapes from a record player! We even taped from radio. It was a time consuming process as it was entirely linear and real time. Finding a song on an LP record took a second by just dropping the needle in the appropriate track but cassette tapes needed rewinding and fast forwarding which took forever. The first computer I used involved punch cards to program. I’ve seen it all.

A year or two prior to Napster releasing, Sean Parker wanted to start a business with me. We had no ideas at the time, but knew we wanted to create something. He got in a lot of trouble in school, was older, and me, being 16, couldn't overrule my parents "no." I do alright for myself, but never miss a chance to point out my friend being played by Justin Timberlake on TV to my parents and being worth gazillions of dollars. This is my sob story.

"If you're in your early 30's or older" Everyone always forgets about Gen-X. Fun fact: both co-founders of Napster are *Gen-X* as is the creator of BitTorrent and all 3 co-founders of KZbin are also Gen-X. The co-founders of Napster are heroes and will always be a huge part of internet culture and history.

My dad used to use Kazaa. I was ten at the time and I had no idea how big of a deal this P2P thing was. However, I do remember wondering where on Earth all this music and audio books were coming from for free. Digital consumption was still relatively new where we were.

I was 15, some very good memories. I remember coming home from the beach and jumping on Napster. It also had a social aspect of it. I was really into Eurodance and E-Rotic which wasn't popular in Australia. So i had a user I friended burn me a Mp3 of all E-Rotic songs and mail it to my physically home address. He even printed a cover on the actual CD for me. I had a 56K modem and thought 5-6Kbps download speed was fast!

Never used Napster. Always saw parodies of it. I was using Kazaa and BearShare. I struggled with BitTorrent but as of 2017 I haven't bothered hoarding files anymore. I don't listen to music anymore, and when I watch movies all I care about is how many times did they have to do that scene or how many times I can catch the boom mic. Radio hasn't changed much. I prefer Spotify as of today but only use it when I'm working. Haven't been able to find work so it's been a quiet 7 months 💙 I'm 28 feeling.

I was a kid when the whole CD burning trend was a thing, but I do remember owning a Sony walkman back in the day. I think the last CD I bought was Linkin Park's minutes to midnight, then everything was digital after that. I do remember the fun times had making bitmap ringtones for my Sony Ericsson phone. It was my first phone and back then you could find bitmaps compositions only and you could remake them by punching in the keys. Man those were the days. Does anyone remember that?

I used Kaaza, when i was 10-13 years old. Then my parents got a lawsuit and my neigbhour got a nice visit from the police. xD The lawyers said i should sign a paper, that i will not do it anymore, I denied, because that would be a lie. Then spotify appeared when i was 15 and I was right, but my honesty costed my parents 3k Euro.🙈 I was not aware of it and they told me that later in life.😅

@Páraic McLean nothing personal, but you did not convince me that you are invested in the topic and our friend seemed more invested than the viewer, the monotone voice did not help either. Napster might have been revolutionary but illegal. They were never meant to last long and it was just a matter of time. Music must never be free, if artists and creators put in their blood sweat and tears to create them, but should be paid for one way or the other. iTunes as well didn't last long because who will buy a song when they can listen to it on KZbin for free? Another wrong business model is what led to their demise. Spotify is not making the music industry right either with its horrible subscription model and soon its end shall come. I'm starting a Tech Music Startup that will fix the low artists compensation issue. Today, I see many of the music industry players trying to revive vinyl but it's just a fact they have to accept... Vinyls and albums are obsolete! The future is singles!
