Self-negativity in pathological narcissism (or NPD) can be labeled as, or feel like, depression -- but is actually something else.
Differentiating between Major Depressive Disorder (which can be treated with meds) and narcissistic self-negativity (which can't) can be difficult, but is necessary if a person is to receive effective treatment.
Dr. Ronningstam's bio:
"Elsa Ronningstam, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in the Gunderson Outpatient Program and the Adult Outpatient Services at McLean Hospital, and an associate professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry (part-time) at Harvard Medical School. She is also a psychoanalyst, a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and a faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. As a longstanding member of the Boston Suicide Study Group, Dr. Ronningstam is also actively working on identifying, understanding, and treating suicide.
Dr. Ronningstam’s prime specialty is diagnosis and treatment of narcissistic personality. Over the past 30 years, she has authored over 100 publications and given over 150 presentations, lectures, and courses, both nationally and internationally. She was the recipient of a 2014 prize for outstanding service in McLean’s borderline personality disorder programs."

Amazing content. Her last sentence was quite insightful for me: Life events, disappointments, and losses (making one un-special) being integrated by looking at the self in overly negative terms. If one cannot be seen as special in the positive sense, then a sense of specialness will be preserved, by being overly negative, and blaming the loss on that. Brilliant self-deception at play here.

If you felt like a BPD overlap, try looking into covert-fragile narcissism.

@@zerokhan3685 It's interesting that firstly NPD and BPD are often comorbid. Secondly, the famous psychoanalyst Otto Kernberg who's in a few of these videos believed that NPD was a defence mechanism against what he called Borderline Personality Organisation (BPO), and that that was the root of most of the different personality disorders. It's a different concept to BPD but has some similarities. Thirdly, I suspect that the ICO system (the one used in most countries outside America) looks at these things in a better way, and refelcts some of Kernberg's thinking. They have scrapped all of the old personality disorders and replaced them a dimensional type model that records traits and their severity. You would get a diagnosis of 'personality disorder' and then a list of the different traits you had. The idea is that the system of different personality disorders as set out in the DCM is reductive and artificial, and that the ICO system allows for a more holistic approach.

I noticed that comments starting with 'Amazing' turn out to be trolling. So, no, sinister prophet, we can't be ' evil' and 'victims' at the same time doesn't work. I feel concened that 46 people should like this degrading, ifallacious, and probale professional comment.. A comment meant to keep a business running. The narcissist must remain the root cahse of evil.. And then you accuse us of wanting to be special!! I hope you are niice the rest of the time.

Very unlikely that a clinical narcissist would fear that. Due to the nature of NPD, they are far more apt to reject the notion that anything could be wrong with them or their approach to life and relationships.

Therapy is rarely a bad idea unless you can't afford it. Even if you aren't NPD, you probably have something to gain by seeing a therapist! Most people do. Good luck!

I just want to say to the people who say "the fact that you doubt you might be a narcissist proves you're not a narcissist" - I think that's a dangerous generalization to make. Yes, narcissists have impaired self reflection and self correction but I think most people who have been led to such resources in search of answers to their life difficulties (which narcissists certainly have), have learnt about narcissism, and then suspect that they might be narcissistic, might actually be right, or if not narcissistic, they might have some level of borderline organisation of personality.

@@TheBadSpoon That's wrong I am onoe. We have a long way to go still....I live in Europe. Wea are spared by that craze. If anything having NPD sucks for the person. A diagnosis doesn't change the person. This person's statement and your reply go to show how mad America is. Ramani and co and mostly her million of viewers avid of hatred results in people being afraid of having NPD, although it wouldn't change anything to who they are, except for the stigrma. NPD equals evil. You all created this monster who is a monster. So your answer is erroneous and enhances the stigma.

Any demasking is followed by a deep seeded regret that could only be described as a metaphorical shotgun in the mouth, it’s no wonder the rate of mass casualty violence given these troubled souls with no real source of treatment ever available.

What about when the negitive thought patterns are directed at other people? I can't do that, becomes you must have done that or a miriad of other excuses. Denial and depression may look and sound like narsisistic behaviour. So a mildly depressed narc could sound like someone who is genuinely trying to deny there depression.... how than, could you define one from the other?

Actually depressed- events or biochemistry cause a situation that results in a feeling of anger turned inward and hoplessness. Narcissistic pseudodepression- an act where the goal is manipulation. As deperssed, it's pointless why bother, why try, why why why. NPD this horrible thing happened. Life is so unfar to ME im entitled to... .
