That square awl is beautiful. The term "heirloom quality" comes to my mind. I only have the round awls, and I can see why the square awl would be useful. The work you do with the mini lathe is very good. It may be small but it's very capable. The drill press vice looks vintage. I don't blame Chuck for avoiding the cage. He has a nice wooden vehicle, and that means freedom to go where he wants, when he wants.
@357magdadАй бұрын
Thanks Pat! I just got that vise this fall at Jacktown. I plan to clean it up this weekend. There are a couple KZbin videos showing how to modify a round pokey thing into a square one.

Square awls are indispensable in the woodworker's shop and prove their value time and again as you show here. Those handles you make look like they came straight from Millers Falls. Beautiful!

Thanks Magdad, you made a beautiful job of that Awl on your tiny lathe, the handle is a pleasing and practical design and of course it's always a pleasure to see it finished in Bombay Mahogany, I think Narex would do well to adopt your design for their handle ! It certainly is a useful tool, as much for reaming out existing pilot holes as making new ones ! I'm off to watch the Paul Sellers video (again) now to remind me what he said about it !

I hope you’re enjoying your lathe they are a great tool for anyone, I might recommend learning how to sharpen your tools properly or even getting a small set of spindle gouges and it will greatly improve your experience and make it more enjoyable! Right now you are using tools more along the lines of scrapers and if you learn to put a proper burr on them it will really speed up operations! The key is enjoying what you do!

This seems to be another exercise for the exercise itself. There are other more effective and efficient tools to do those tasks. Anyway, most of us have too many tools we don’t use. In my shop, it would get buried and lost in the useless tools box.
