UPDATE! You can do this effect if you have a mid side EQ. Filter the side the instrument is panned to and then make the track mono again! I find that to be easier! This video is always growing and I've learn a lot since it. So here is a simpler way to do it Update Feb 2nd: There is now a KZbin short about how to do it with Midside EQ!!!

@@dabi2350 Thanks for the recognition! For this specific video I have an update coming tomorrow in form of a KZbin Short. It is not a prop!! It severely reduces ambience for the mic! search for Kaotica Eyeball and you will see how popular it is! AND btw I do have a Patreon, I didn't have it when this video dropped, but I do now. The L and R trick works well on old soul records, motown records, etc... BTW, they knew how to pan just fine, but at that time they were dealing with bleed in the tape machines too, so they tended to over pan to accentuate the stereo image. Stereo was a big innovation at the time... Anyway, good stuff. You might also take a look at mid/side processing as another way to get at interesting versions of a sample. It takes the insight in this video to another level.

Niceee, I've thought about it, but never done it! Separate mid and side and do sound processing to each differently!! Sounds like it can create a mixing nightmare, ot the dopest effect! Imma try it out, thanks!

The old mixers only allowed Left/Mid/Right, no where in-between. Consoles from the 50's like the Universal Audio 610 had a 3 way switch with L M R, other desks called it LCR. On a lot of older Jazz recordings (early Blue Note) you hear this. Proper Panning cam in in the 60's, but of course stereo micing would give a stereo field when mics were the hard panned, but mono had to be placed. Rubber Soul by the Beatles that was L C R and that was '65. The EMI TG12345 console installed in Abbey Roads in 68' was one of the first with proper panning.

The reason a lot of older music has this kind of hard panning is because stereo sound was only widely introduced in the late '60s, so engineers where experimenting and learning how to mix in stereo for the first time. Hard panning certain things can create loads of space in a mix, so it made a lot of sense. Also, back then, most people were listening to music on speakers, not headphones (as is the case these days), so you wouldn't run into the same issues with hard panning you do now, where the sound disappears from one ear, because you'd generally always be hearing both channels. Hard panning can still be a really useful technique to create space in a mix, but is probably best used sparingly and left for auxiliary sounds like percussion, FX, etc.

hey awesome video, excited to try this technique out. Quick question though, why are you making the sound more stereo after hard panning the sample if you are gonna make it mono after.
@Narokx
@Narokx 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it! Glad you liked it! As it is the case on the Kanye example, if you don't make it stereo after panning the Guitar won't disappear. But in the Jorge Ben example hard panning is enough and you could just make it mono afterwards, without making ut stereo first. I think it comes down to how the original sample was recorded/mixed!

I use both Fl and Ableton, but for editing videos I am more accustomed to using Fl You can pan in many different places on every daw (signal flows is impacted by where/when you pan). On the video I am mostly panning on Fl's mixer. You can see when I show it on the Stardust example!

How do the Pan Knobs and Stereo Knob work in FL? Trying to recreate the technique in Logic Panning the guitar from dj rogers sample left works and then I can bounce that so its no longer only on left channel but basically mono left signal but on stereo. So what does the Stereo Knob from FL do then? Is it an imaging Knob for Stereo Imaging/Seperation?
