I had a DM who taught the meta gamer rogue a good lesson. When a new character entered the inn they were living, the rogue immediately picked the lock of his room and searched through his belongins. The DM asked why did he chose to search that particular person´s stuff and he just shrugged and said his character was paranoid and would go through anybody´s stuff just in case, even when many others had come and gone and he never had broken into their rooms. So one session we had two new characters (one was a player who recently died and was rolling a new character and the other was his friend who wanted to try d&d for the first time) As always, we were at the inn, recovering from our last quest (my character almost died so he was quite beaten up) when the DM said that two elves were talking on the corner of the room. As expected, the rogue walked right to them and sat on the nearest table, trying to listen to their conversation. The elves realized they were being spyed and decided to leave. Seeing that the elves were not the new players, the rogue followed them, thinking they were important npcs and would lead him to some important quest related discovery. After following them for a whole day, he realized they were just two elves who lived in that city, nothing fishy there. Also, the elves noticed the rogue spying on them and report about a suspicious fellow to the guards. Wich lead to the rogue being deteined for questioning, leaving the DM enought time to introduce the new players to the group. When the rogue asked about the elves the DM just said: "They were just hanging out, having a drink. They left because they noticed a weird guy spying on them and felt quite uncomfortable. When they noticed you had followed them to their house they got scared and did what anybody would do and called the guards." And so the rogue learned his lesson. Just kidding, as soon as he got out of jail he tryed to break into the rooms of the new players, wich lead to another day in prison and having to leave the inn for good.

Just had my session of lost mines of phandelver and taught my players the outcome of murder-hoboing. Without spoiling anything to those who want to run the campaign it goes as follows: they had decided to take a quest from a local quest giver to get rid of a band leader operating in town and they procedeed to go to their hangout and murder everyone except one for information. Then they murdered him and cut of their heads as a token of their good work and presented them to the quest giver who was really pissed off at them basically saying that "you murdered those members and you honestly think that their boss wont look out for them and that he would just let this fly by without fortifying his base with more henchmen and without revenge on the local citizens!? Now take these heads and get lost and fix this mess!" That made my players think and fully grasp the concicvences of killing everything they see and get out that "this is just like a video game" mindset

Super awesome lesson! I once DMmed a party that only used half of their abilities, and had little to no respect for eachother. I solved it by having them get hit by a beam of ancient technology. (This was a modern day campaign, and they where exploring the ancient sunken city of Atlantis) They all fell unconcious, and I had all the players close their eyes. Then I swapped their character sheets, effectively causing my entire party to be bodyswapped. They had the mind of their old character, but for the time being, they had to use the stats and abilities of the body they were in. This was amazing to watch. From the first player to wake up to my comment: "You open your eyes, and the first thing you see, is your own face, still asleep."(He screamed like a schoolgirl and woke up the rest) to how they handled stuff ("No way I'm taking the frontline now! This is Khaidlynn's body, I can't bash it around like my own!) and how they made eachother see new and creative abilities to use their powers. When they finally found the technology to swap themselves back, the lesson was learned. Also, I read a lot of comment that say: "Kick that Bard!" "If he's not going to play his character as he should, he should roll a new one!" But why? The meta-gaming part isn't cool, I get that, but if he refuses to use his abilities, even after this lesson, that's his choice. If he likes to play a Bard that way, let him, especially if his entire group doesn't make a big deal out of it. Part of the fun of the game and your character is how you shape it, and that doesn't always follow stereotype. I myself play a Tiefling Fiend Warlock with an Urban Bountyhunter background, like a stealthy knife thrower. Tons of fun so far. Just saying. Anyway, thanks for the vid, and till next time!

@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 4 жыл бұрын
@@dandew1072 That would have been a poor DM decision that would be unnecessary. Having them all like a series of portcullises one after the other would have been better in that they can all be seen and yet will only open if the right character activates their particular portcullis. That way, the players can see how they work, but also be denied egress until all have been activated without having to put in a silly magical barrier that only allows certain classes to pass. The difference comes down to the DM and whether they can make a believable scenario or an unbelievable one. Its metagaming in that how would doors know what class a person was, let alone know when someone used a class ability. This seemed necessary with how unfamiliar the players were at playing their classes.

In our current campaign we had the bright idea to have a small band of orcs become town guards for the small village we were staying at. I hindsight, dumb idea, but our wizard sold us on the idea and I wasn't being the best moral compress even for being a cleric of Tyr. Final dungeon for the module comes and goes, only to find the town had been basically destroyed by several warbands of orcs. Thankfully one of big factions was nearby and wiped out the warbands. Afterwards my cleric took the event personally, spending much his time in the weeks after trying to repair the damage. Even to point that I had him give up his cut of a reward from the final dungeon. My DM is a first time DM, but she is amazing and taught us that our actions and inactions will come back around.

My favorite teachable D&D moment was a Pathfinder game I was in that taught the lesson of not fighting the guards who were just doing their jobs. What happened was that we were in a city for a quest and the party rogue, who was actually a really good player, was accused of stealing something and then the guard who responded recognized him from a description and tried to arrest him. He (character not player) freaked out and tried to run, and the rest of the party attacked the guards in an attempt to defend him--except for me. I'm not bragging here, really, it was just that I was playing a Lawful Good and the guards were the law. Reinforcements arrived and went right passed my character who was just standing there and watching, being law-abiding and nonthreatening. The end result of this was everyone except the LG cleric in jail and said cleric going around using Diplomacy and the fact that she'd been a good citizen to get them out. I wish to note that the "don't fight the guards who're just doing their jobs" wasn't a lesson the party had to learn--they were all veterans who were playing their characters according to how the characters would act and already knew those characters were being stupid. But I still regard the experience as a good example of a lesson being taught even though the audience wasn't at that table.

This was great. I run a group of 6 where only 2 of the players are veterans (team's rogue & cleric). The rest are new. One is a monk who only uses flurry of blows (no other Open Hand abilities), a gunslinger who doesn't understand his action economy, and 2 casters (sorcerer & wizard). I've really had to take my time as give them times to learn their class abilities and carve out time to help them learn anything giving them trouble. The wizard doesn't just his conjuration school abilities, but he's new to 5e and casters can be a lot for a new player, so I'm cutting his some slack. The sorcerer doesn't regen his spell slots with his sorcery points, but sorcerers can be tricky and I'm working with him to help him get it. The fighter was weird since they're the most straight forward, but he was basically confused by "what can I do as an action" so realizing he didn't do any research, I had to teach him the basics (this presumably wouldn't be an issue if he wasn't playing a gunslinger, but any other fighter). The only point of resistance is the monk who insists that his ki is punching ammo and doesn't use stunning strike or his Open Hand techniques. But I plan to work with him to help him broaden his options. I've known this group of friends for a long time and getting them into D&D is my way of keeping us from drifting apart since these guys and girls are like family to me. I'm willing to take my time and really work with them so they can learn the game and have good old crazy fun

I made a variant of this puzzle for my party. Full story will be submitted later, once the campaign’s over. Basically, I made a trial of the gods. Same premise of recovering enemies and locked room. But the gods were watching how they used their skills, and their symbols would brighten on their hands by a point per god. The same skill used a different way could curry favor with a different deity, and skills that straddled gods would curry favor with both. Once ten “points” of lights were collected by a character, their symbols would flash and lock to whichever deity had the most. Ties had to be settled before locking. Once every character got 10 points, the trial ended, and the party got loot based on their character and which deity they won favor from.

A puzzle room that encourages the players to use a variety of abilities before advancing vs a very simple training enemy is pretty brilliant stuff! I could definitely consider doing some puzzle fights similar to this themed around certain unique player abilities. I think even experienced players could use encouragement to use some of their best options.

My Sorcerer had a bad case of "Rogue Complex" Meaning he would take everything that wasn't bolted to the ground once all the enemies we're destroyed. No matter how insignificant, or if it was an NPC ally that fell, he would take it like the horder he was. It was especially an issue when a magic item was given to the party. I wanted to teach him that sometimes you don't wanna take an item. This is what I did: The party was caught in a snow storm, and needed shelter. They found a cave that held a statue of a snow/wind god, acting as a church or place to give offerings. On the alter in front of the statue was a beautiful sword made of Ice with a red gem in the hilt. Of course, the sorcerer grabs it, knowing that he can't even use it as well as some of the other party members. (Like the party paladin for example) As he touched the sword, it melted into water, the red gem included. Behind them, from the ground, a large ice giant grows out from the ground. Roll initiative. The giant was mopping the floor with them, killing the party paladin right before the sorcerer felled the giant. Was it cruel? Maybe. (The Paladin was experienced and was cool with character death. Seriously awesome dude.) Did it work? Hell yes. He knew not to be so graby with magic items or normal items when it didn't make sense to take it. No regerts

That is really nice, and inspiring too! I am GM-ing a game of Dragon Age, and based on threats and themes of my arching plot I'm designing an encounter in the Fade (a dram-like plane where smarts, communication and willpower are often more important than physical strengths)... I think I can use that kind of puzzles to give them a headache :p

I wish I had thought of that three months ago. I was playing with a group of new players and running the prince of the apocalypse campaign. The players seem to enjoy it but often find encounters frustrating. I had trouble getting the two spell casters to understand using magic vs their crossbows especially since one is a sorcerer and has yet to use Meta magic. However this was my first time being a DM so I do watch these videos to get some advice. I will remember this one for the future

A great solution, also why would anyone dislike this video? I wish my first D&D experience was similar to this, my first experience was simply not good at all. It happened yrs ago, but am happy that I have recently joined a campaign and I'm having lots of fun with it

Even if this was a solution to a smooth brained party the puzzle itself is brilliant. This will be a go to puzzle when running a campaign with new players it can be a great moment to learn more of why D&D is so amazing.

I would assume the rapier-wielding bard takes inspiration from earlier editions where (I've heard) bards could be bladedancers and other melee characters
@shanerasmussen5225

Depends how far back you go. For example, AD&D doesn't even have Bards in the core classes, ie The Players Handbook. I think they came in with 2nd edition but I don't have that PHB to check, 3.5 does have Bards in the core classes, and includes rapier in the short list of weapons that can be chosen for starting proficiency, has spells, but their abilities are Bardic Music and Bardic Knowledge. I think back in 2E Bards didn't even get spells.
@sertandoom4693
@sertandoom4693 4 жыл бұрын
@@shanerasmussen5225 AD&D bards did exist, they were basically "multi" dual classed. They would start as a thief or fighter for so many levels, then they would start leveling in the other until they hit a certain level, then they would start over again as a druid at which point they were considered bards. Generally speaking, unbalanced as all heck- stealth, fighting, and druid magic use (they also had to have appropriate stats for each class).

Great solution ! That's the extreme version but often heppens with one or two players not really playing to their fullest. Showing a NPC of their class can work but not always, Not sure if I'd steal that specific solution (great but only if it's a party wide problem), but I'd love a bunch of encounters ideas tailored at this task...

I was DM'ing a game for some friends and my girlfriend's younger brother, all newbies but one of my friends. For this campaign, they were in an island city when the island's volcano starts erupting and the city is at risk of being destroyed. To succeed, the group had to split the party and have Group A defend the town citizens from fire creatures that were awakened while Group B defending the spell casters who were working to detour the lava flow around the town. Anyway, as soon as the volcano started erupting my gf's brother, playing a chaotic neutral warlock, made a beeline for the port and tried to steal the first ship he found. When I tell him that someone else has climbed on, he tries to lie and say "This is my ship. If you give me 10gp I'll bring you to safety". He rolls a very low deception against my natural 20 insight. I explain how this is actually the npc's ship and he knows you're lying. He immediately casts burning hands and kills the guy. As the guy falls back to the dock, clothes still on fire, everyone else stops and stares. He rolls a 14 deception to declare "he was trying to steal my ship, it was self defense" which I tell him is high enough for everyone to ignore what just happened since there's a volcano erupting, but no one trusts you enough to board the ship. "Fine, then I bring the ship out far enough until the rest of the group gets here" he says. "Is your background a sailor? Or does your character have any experience that would let him sail this ship by himself?" I ask. He angrily says no and demanded "I thought you can do whatever you want in this game?!" I calmly responded "you can. You just straight murdered a guy because he caught you stealing his boat. But just because you can do anything doesnt mean it doesn't have consequences." At this point he begrudgingly left the port to rejoin the group to complete the mission.

The only thing I would’ve added to the scenario would have been three dots on each door that would light up one at a time before the door opened. It’s been my experience in RPG‘s but if you try to solve a puzzle and an action you take fails you try something else you don’t try the same thing multiple times, at least unless there is some sort of queue that is showing you it’s working.

My teaching moment was as a player. Short version of the story, don't start PVP with the Tiefling Warlock who gets three attacks a round for 2d6+4 each hit that crits on a 19 inside a burning building when you don't have fire resistance and only get one attack a round. (They attacked me, not the other way around, and it wasn't mutually agreed upon, they just attacked me.)
