Dr Gehart- I've just finished watching this video and I cannot express how useful it has been. I had only heard of narrative therapy in passing before now, and as a psychology student, my knowledge on this subject has been broadened entirely, to a scope in which I could explain it to others if asked. Thank you so much for taking time out of your life to make this. I will be watching many more of your videos in the future!

So glad you enjoyed it! Narrative really has a lot to offer--very versatile approach.

Thank you. This is my favourite modality because it’s so empowering for the client. I like Foucault’s discourse theory and post modern counselling theories.

Thank you for this video! Been studying for the MFT Clinical board exam and this was very helpful in further understanding the meaning of Narrative therapy. Certainly have missed your lectures at CSUN so thank you for reminding me of those good ol’ days sitting at your lectures.

I am studying narrative therapy and I just covered this in school. I like how you present it. I'm wondering about the difference in terminology between collaborative and narrative. I know that collaborative highlights empathy and creating a safe space and I'm wondering how you see that as a narrative therapist

Thank you so much for the video I'm a first year MFT student, and narrative therapy hasn't exactly been covered yet, and this has been helpful in understanding a different therapy style!

Agree. Have been a 'Counsellee' recipient & and beneficiary of Narrative Therapy and still conclude it is the most straightforward 'framework' within which 'all the other therapies' can be accommodated. As stated, NT finds 'no fault in people' - but looks to people in the most favourable light. In which they may 'shine brightly' 😊

Thank you this was very thorough and helpful. I'm starting out in private practice.. still under Supervision. Much to learn, but this helped me as a resource creating a case study and using narrative as a therapeutic method.

I love the title screen art work of a barb in a wire becoming a bird which captures the metaphor. Thanks for the video.

Is it possible for one to use narrative therapy on oneself without a therapist? Can I self examine myself and change my stories?
@dougrichard5437 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but likely only to a certain extent.
@anthsilk1 Жыл бұрын
You definitely can. The benefit of working with a therapist includes having to explain how your life fits together and having another human around to ask questions when things don't seem to fit together
@bridietulloch15203 ай бұрын
@@swapnil988 yes you can, through autobiographical journaling and using story involving characters you identify with such as the heroine’s journey. We need a map to know where we have been and where we desire to go next in our lives. You can also draw your own Tree of Life and River of Life or Road Map of your life. There are examples of these online that can guide you. Be aware of problem saturated stories that you might be telling yourself and look for glimmers and alternative stories that include your strengths.

Do you see some risk that a "preferred identity" winds up just being a false self in the cluster B sense?
@DianeRGehartPhD10 ай бұрын
It's theoretically possible, for sure. That's where being a skilled clinician is required for this to work!
