I'm currently in a Master's Counseling program and this was so helpful to pair with the class reading on therapeutic techniques (they're super saturated and sometimes easy to get lost in, not to mention the long and boring outdated videos from the 1980s on counseling that we have to watch) but the way you explained this was so smooth to digest and understand. Thank you Steph, we future counselors appreciate you!

Same! currently in one of my last classes for clinical mental health counseling before internships. Family therapy seems a little out of the DSM-5 mental health realm. Very thankful for this video since I was hit with a 10-12 page paper to be due! Thank you Steph!! Your knowledge is greatly appreciated!

It's the "Therapist isn't an expert but more of a guide" for me. I always viewed therapy as the place where therapist tell you what's right or wrong. It's enlightening to know that isn't the case and an approach like this teaches that we all can provide the answers for ourselves. Sometimes it just takes a "co-author" to get us there. Excellent video! Thank you! Until next Monday!

As an "OG" therapist, trained in early 80's, I believe it is important to not diminish the importance of intrapsychic dynamics in favor of the "social network" I see too many clients fixated on what others say/do, especially on social media. There is great calm and peace in being by oneself focusing on a beautiful scene in nature, for example. To be sure, too much of either social or individual time can be deleterious to one's mental health

Therapeutic alliance is certainly about an active and collaborative process and dialogue where a therapist's main role is to ask a client powerful, deep, thought- provoking and forward moving questions aimed at self- discovery, empowerment, choices , actions , commitment and acceptance of responsibilities. A therapist can also challenge clients and provide occasionally a feedback, assist clients in deconstructing certain meanings, finding purposes and faulty logic. However, it is ultimately the client who is responsible for her change, improvement and life enhancing outcomes !

I find it hard to concentrate on what you are saying with the music playing. Anyway, thanks again :)

Hi Steph Anya, I love your videos! I rely heavily on the closed captioning as a hard-of-hearing individual and the captions for this video don't make any sense. When I saw that it was nonsensical, I clicked on another one of your videos, and that one was working fine. So, I'm wondering if it has something to do with this video specifically. What if the story you tell yourself is all wrong, like in the case of weddings turning into divorce, tho that could be true, it discourages a person from getting married even though they may want that. How would one work through that conflict? I subscribed because I agree with the social constructivist theory you shared.
