As a second year therapist hoping to work with South Asians I'm so glad you mentioned this works well with Asian cultures! I didn't think of the non-shaming aspect! I figured it t works because Asian Americans come to therapy wanting to know what to do about their problems but the non-shaming part is also essential ! Thanks for another amazing lecture as always Dr. Gehart!

Cynthia, Thanks for sharing this! Such an important point. And to expand on that, if I forgot to say it in the video, it's a good approach for anyone who comes from a family background that does not embrace mental health treatment or from a marginalized group/culture that has reason to be wary of mental health professionals.

What about clients who over time don't have any particular complaints or problem but just talk, maybe get to talking about struggles eventually, but don't seem to be needing anything from the therapist, or think of any goals, or engage with any exercises enthusiastically, but keep wanting to come in?

If you’re a private therapist and the client is paying for each session, then congratulations, you’ve found a cash cow. However if you’re not a private practitioner, or you have a conscience, then you need to have a frank conversation with the client about what they are getting from speaking to you. Then work out who they have in their lives currently, or what social network(s) they could build that would offer them what you offer them. It could be a special interest group, a self-help group, or re-engaging with old friends or family members who they may not have spoken to for a while. Most people appreciate being listened and not judged. Unfortunately not everyone has friends or family who offer that to them
