Great video. I get that low BW is synonymous with slow throughput and high BW with high throughput. However maybe I missed something when you equate narrow bandwidth with high resolution and vice versa for wide bandwidth. I thought that in the spectral domain, a wider bandwidth equates with the equivalent of allowing for a primary wave plus many more harmonics than a narrower bandwidth. More harmonics means that you can more faithfully reconstruct a time domain signal, given that you have available more of the higher frequency components? Could you explain how a narrow band IF is analogous to a higher resolution outcome? I'm genuinely interested. Thanks
@KeysightLabs4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Here's the response from Matt: While it’s true that measuring over a wide bandwidth gives you a better idea of harmonics and neighboring signals, all of that bandwidth needs to be converted to a digital format for the instrument to analyze. Let’s say you’re looking at the response of a band pass filter with a pass band at 5GHz. You sweep your frequency from 1 GHz to 10 GHz so you can see how the signal behaves outside of the pass band. That entire 1 GHz to 10 GHz bandwidth needs to be converted to a digital format for the instrument to analyze and display. The instrument breaks the bandwidth into pieces and converts it one piece at a time. The width of those pieces is the intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth. This is where it gets tricky because we have two bandwidths - the bandwidth we’re measuring across (1 GHz to 10 GHz) and the bandwidth at which we’re converting the measurement to digital (the IF bandwidth). When you convert wide portions of your test signal to digital, you introduce more random noise into your trace. So, converting smaller pieces of your measurement to digital by using a narrow IF bandwidth gives you better resolution.
@geor6644 жыл бұрын
@@KeysightLabs ahhh, got it. Thanks makes sense now It's similar to audio band sweep measurements, where you sweep with a narrow passband filter. More accuracy, less noise. Many thanks

Your misusing the term BandWidth. Band width is a term directly relating to the operating frequency or spectrum of frequency present at any given time. Your trying to apply the term to Resolution. It's not working and not the proper use of the term. Many words are being misused today adding to the watering down of our language.
