Fun fact, when Nas says "I don't know how to start this..." That was actually kept in recording by accident. His first take of recording the track was so good, they kept everything as is and just let it be. There's moments in the song where Nas is a little ahead of the beat, a little behind, runs out of breath between bars, etc. but the raw essence of how everything came together made for just the right amount of griminess and polish they were looking for. According to DJ Premier.

The sample on the hook is from Eric B & Rakim's song "Mahogany" from 1990/91. Rakim might be the most important MC in the history of hip-hop. He was the one who introduced the more conversational delivery as opposed to the bombastic style of Run-DMC, etc. He was also a pioneer in terms of multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and rhyming the words in the middle of sentences as opposed to just the last words. Definitely worth checking out at some point, particularly "Follow the Leader". For my money, no one has ever been better at rapping about rapping than Rakim was.

Nas is the closest rapper to Tupac as far as content and substance in raps. Tupac was listening to Nas album "It was written" on repeat before he passed, borderline studying Nas. Nas first album "Ilmatic" is considered the holy grail of rap albums. At the time of making, NY top producers were submitting him the beats, because the Westcoast rap (Deathrow) was dominating the charts. His beat selection on albums wasn't too popular (radio friendly) and it's why Jay-Z surpassed him as the all time great as far as success.

The chorus is a sample from Rakim (widely regarded as arguably the greatest rapper). He is also known as Rakim Allah or the God MC. The sample comes from a song called Mahogany, from Eric B and Rakim's third studio album. Eric B was Rakim's DJ. Rakim is credited for being the first rapper to take lyricism from its basic form to a more complex level ( I disagree btw, I credit Kool Moe Dee and his bandmates from the Treacherous Three). I do agree though that Rakim was the first alien level multi-syllabic and multi-pattern rapper. He took Kool Moe Doe's innovation to insane levels. Great post BTW. Nas is my favorite.
