Fun fact, when Nas says "I don't know how to start this..." That was actually kept in recording by accident. His first take of recording the track was so good, they kept everything as is and just let it be. There's moments in the song where Nas is a little ahead of the beat, a little behind, runs out of breath between bars, etc. but the raw essence of how everything came together made for just the right amount of griminess and polish they were looking for. According to DJ Premier.

Thanks! I love fun facts! Did he have the rap written? Or was this freestyle?
@GABA-Gool
@GABA-Gool 3 жыл бұрын
@@ABoomerReacts He wrote it. There's some MC's out there like Jay-Z and Lil Wayne who don't write their lyrics. More of a "rehearsed" freestyle that they continuously work on until it all comes together. But Nas is a traditional pen and pad MC.

The sample on the hook is from Eric B & Rakim's song "Mahogany" from 1990/91. Rakim might be the most important MC in the history of hip-hop. He was the one who introduced the more conversational delivery as opposed to the bombastic style of Run-DMC, etc. He was also a pioneer in terms of multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and rhyming the words in the middle of sentences as opposed to just the last words. Definitely worth checking out at some point, particularly "Follow the Leader". For my money, no one has ever been better at rapping about rapping than Rakim was.

if you get a chance to listen to all of illmatic a lot of Nas’ influence came from 80s rappers like Rakim (NY State of Mind) and Slick Rick (The World is Yours). Nas is the closest rapper to Tupac as far as content and substance in raps. Tupac was listening to Nas album "It was written" on repeat before he passed, borderline studying Nas. Nas first album "Ilmatic" is considered the holy grail of rap albums. At the time of making, NY top producers were submitting him the beats, because the Westcoast rap (Deathrow) was dominating the charts. His beat selection on albums wasn't too popular (radio friendly) and it's why Jay-Z surpassed him as the all time great as far as success.

The chorus is a sample from Rakim (widely regarded as arguably the greatest rapper). He is also known as Rakim Allah or the God MC. The sample comes from a song called Mahogany, from Eric B and Rakim's third studio album. Eric B was Rakim's DJ. Rakim is credited for being the first rapper to take lyricism from its basic form to a more complex level ( I disagree btw, I credit Kool Moe Dee and his bandmates from the Treacherous Three). I do agree though that Rakim was the first alien level multi-syllabic and multi-pattern rapper. He took Kool Moe Doe's innovation to insane levels. Great post BTW. Nas is my favorite. @@ABoomerReacts nice. The devils son is meaner then leroy brown, he is like the end boss of the super villains with a awesome rhyme struckture. It s like seeing the painting of saturn devoring his child for the first time. You are shoked and impressed of the artwork in the same time.

In my opinion, Illmatic is the best solo rap album ever released and this is a hell of a single. I watch, probably, too many reaction vids, I thought you looked cool so here I am. UK rap...slowthai, maybe?

2Pac dissed Nas but they ran into each other both with deep clicks on edge but them 2 talked 1 on 1 and squashed it but this was after the 2pac diss song. Snoop even said there was a time where Nas caught him and 2Pac with only a few dude's and Nas had to many guy's with him and could have gave the word right then and there to end them but that's when him and Pac really connected.

I think your reaction should focus on your boomerness, something like "i have trouble focusing because of the bad words, in my time you could never say some of these words on record" or maybe what something about what that time period was like from a nowadays boomer perspective, how you have viewed this kind of music before, did enduring sitting through it and really listening change your views, and so on.
