@@beckydoesit9331 What do you mean when you say: "All southern continents 'look toward' the South Pole star Sigma Octantis." and " 'Looking' in different directions"? But neither of those points should really matter. If Polaris Australis (Sigma Octantis) and Polaris exist, and the Earth is flat, both should be visible from anywhere on the surface of Earth simultaneously, but they aren't. That's because the curvature of Earth obscures them, since they are supposed to be the closest star to their respective poles. So at the southern pole, Polaris would be around the opposite side of the Earth to your location, and vice versa for Polaris Australis. Maybe if you were at very high elevation somewhere around the equator you MIGHT be able to see both, but not sure about that, since I'm no expert. But hey, you could go to the north pole and find both of those stars in the sky at the same time, seems like that would be irrefutable proof of a flat Earth!

This guy clearly never used a sextant before, he has no idea about celestial navigation. Long before GPS, navigators used a device called ‘sextant’ to determine the angle of a celestial body. From that data, the latitude of their current location can be determined. In the Northern hemisphere, navigators usually used Polaris. Using a sextant, they measured the angle between Polaris and the horizon. The angle would be very close to the latitude of their current position. In the Southern hemisphere, they did the same thing but with the south celestial pole. The problem is that there’s no bright star close to the south celestial pole, unlike Polaris in the North. So, they used the nearby Crux and Pointer stars to determine the approximate location of the south celestial pole. The angle between the south celestial pole and the horizon is the same as the latitude of the observer. Celestial navigation is possible only because the Earth is spherical. We make use of the knowledge of the correct figure of the Earth for the purposes of navigation. This is how our ancestors were able to travel to the other side of the world (and back to the original location) without the modern technology we have today. imgur.com/Lb9j84c

From the northern hemisphere, you can't see the south celestial pole if you look south - you can't see Sigma Octantis, Magellanic Clouds, Crux. But if you look north, you can see star trails rotating anticlockwise. From the southern hemisphere, you can't see the north celestial pole if you look north - you can't see Polaris. "The law of perspective of plane surfaces..." - more like the law of word salad.
@srinivastatachar49514 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are different types of perspective, and plane perspective is one of them. So is spherical perspective... Guess which one we're all observing on the surface of Earth? But there is no such thing as a 'law of perspective;' it's just a matter of geometry. ==================================================================================================================================================
@srinivastatachar49514 жыл бұрын
@@radbarij I should clarify, though, because what I said above can be misleading for those who may not have studied perspective towards an artistic and/or technical end. In general, perspective, as in the purely geometric effect that you get as a result of distance, is independent of the surface you're standing on and is purely linear. However, you can 'force' or distort perspective by arranging objects on different types of surfaces such as cylindrical, conical, spherical surfaces and such, or by using different types of lenses (forced, exaggerated, spherical or fish-eye effects, in addition to several other types of effects can be obtained with a good SLR). Which means that the perspective on the surface of the Earth is spherical perspective, but very closely approximates planar or linear perspective just because the planet is so huge compared to the size of a normal human being. This is why we are taught to put the vanishing point on the horizon, even though the actual vanishing point is slightly (imperceptible to the unaided eye) above the actual horizon. Sorry for the lengthy reply, but you can see that even this has been simplified and shortened, for entire volumes have been written on the subject. ======================================
@srinivastatachar49514 жыл бұрын
@@radbarij I don't remember all the books I've used to educate myself on the topic, but I.H. Morris is a good one. I've also used several textbooks prescribed to us for Technical Drawing (Civil and Mechanical Engineering courses) as well as books for the production of art, specifically, Stan Lee's 'How to Draw Superheroes'. So, as you can see, it runs the gamut, but basically, any book on perspective drawing, be it for technical courses or art, will suffice. =======================================

@hapaxl.60754 жыл бұрын
Also, when you share that opinion publically, is fair game.
@frocat51634 жыл бұрын
This is the key. Opinions are subjective and cannot be proven right or wrong. I can say, "Apples are the best fruit," and I'm welcome to believe that. But everyone else is perfectly welcome to say, "Apples are the worst fruit," and their statement would be just as valid as mine. That's what it means to say, "Everyone is entitled to their opinion." If, however, I were to say, "Apples are grown below ground like potatoes," I can't claim the 'protection' of everyone being allowed an opinion...because that statement isn't an opinion. Additionally, being allowed to have an opinion doesn't mean that anyone else is obligated to respect our opinion or consider it as valid as other opinions. Flerfing idiots don't have an opinion about the Earth's shape, though. It is impossible to have an opinion about something factual, other than whether or not one likes or dislikes that fact. A belief isn't an opinion without a subjective qualifier. We don't get to have an opinion on the sum of 2+2. Claiming, "In _my_ opinion, 2+2=8," doesn't provide some kind of unassailable defense for that statement. Making an objectively false claim and attempting to defend its validity by calling that claim an opinion is nothing but stupidity and/or ignorance. And no one is obligated to respect that claim.

My intention was to point out that too many people seem to think the idea that, "Everyone is entitled to their opinion," means that everyone's opinion _must_ be respected by everyone, without question, regardless of what that opinion might be. For example, racists are certainly entitled to their opinion that their ethnicity is better than others, but none of us are obligated to show any respect for the racist's opinion.

He shows the bottom of someone disappearing bottom up on a football field when they are designed to be curved so water runs off them. A very good and expensive field will have as little curve as possible that still allows the field to drain. Most fields, like the one he showed will have a lot of curve because it’s easier to build. A baseball field can’t be curved because of the nature of the sport so they often use tarps to cover up the field when rain is forecasted before a game if there won’t be time to dry out and during rain delays. If a soccer or football field is perfectly flat then they have an underground drainage system and you can’t just walk around on those fields like you can with public fields. I’m not an expert but I did play on some sexy fields in high school.

7:00 This graphic shows perfectly clear that on a flat earth, no matter how far the observer is they can always see the feet of the observed. As indicated by the straight line that is drawn from the camera to the feet. On a globe, we expect the surface to obscure the subject starting from the bottom. On a flat earth, we would expect the subject to always be completely unobscured. Perspective means things further away have a smaller angular size, not that their position sinks below the surface.

Variations on the same theme. A flat earther dies and is waiting at the pearly gates. St Peter says to the man, before entering heaven you may ask God one question. I love it when they insist that you can use trigonometry at two points to prove a local sun. Yet they never can explain why, if you use *three* points, you'll get conflicting answers. On that note, have any of these flat earthers actually taken the measurements themselves?
@Eagle85994 жыл бұрын
He also says the sun is 3,000 miles away. In my book, that is not local! Kid: "Hey Mom I'm gonna go hangout with my friends." Mom: "Are you going some place local?" Kid: "Yeah, it's only 3,000 miles away!" Mom: 😶🤦🏻
@frocat51634 жыл бұрын
Of course they haven't taken the measurements themselves. If these jackasses aren't smart enough to understand you can't TRIangulate something with only two observations, why would we expect them to be capable of performing the necessary observations?

Like most of Dubay material, he plagiarized the 3,000 mile height from Samuel Rowbotham's book from the 19th Century. I have seen a couple of flat earthers make a calculation of the distance to the Sun using invalid geometry using one location at one instant of time. Recently somebody used the tangent of the Sun's angle above the horizon multiplied by the distance to the sub-solar point to calculate its height. I kept telling him that you have to be in the same plane as the point below the object to use that formula, but he never did get it. I gave him multiple calculations giving different results and it just went over his head.

The fact that he thinks an object going really far away on a flat earth would “disappear” and not just shrink in size is mind boggling.
