The tape that NASCAR uses to do quick fixes mid-race is called Bear Bond. It's like the Gorilla Glue of tapes. NASCAR has certified it as a strong enough adhesive to not peel off at 180 mph (290 km/h) and has a strong enough structural integrity to not tear from the forceful impact of all the wind generated.

It's a different product and those in the US that use it in the original intent call it gaffer's tape because... they're gaffers. It's actual cloth, gaffers tape, and not aluminized. It was never intended to seal anything but hold up heavy cabling and fix scaffolds for stage electrics, but come off easily enough later. They're likely using speed tape in places too, which is oddly enough the tape that would work better on actual ducts. Speed tape is a thicker/stronger version of duct sealant, it's just a thick aluminum foil with an adhesive back.

Gaffer tape is black and is made from fabric, duct tape is also fabric, but has a plastic membrane over the fabric. Gaffer tape is used by electricians in the show business because it it very strong and easily removable if needed.

I love you guys reacting to NASCAR videos. I'm a huge motorsports fan. NASCAR, open wheel, Aussie V8, everything. I'm also becoming a huge office blokes fan. Any questions you guys ask about American sports I'll do my best to answer, although I may be somewhat delayed in doing so. For example, I remember a while back you saying you weren't interested in watching NFL ankle breaker videos because you didn't want to see peoples bones break. Ankle breaks is slang in the NFL for exceptionally elusive jukes and evasive dodges. No actual broken bones. Just like getting megged in soccer/football has nothing to do with nutmeg the spice.

NASCAR uses a points system and drivers collect points during the season. Obviously the goal is to be the points leader at the end of the last race of the season. Sometimes you just need to finish a race or perhaps come in 10th or better for example to maintain or improve your standings. It's more detailed than I've explained but hopefully this gives you some helpful insight as to the why bother. By the way, I'm 30min. west of Charlotte N.C. the home of NASCAR. Many of the drivers have their headquarters in Mooresvile N.C. just North of Charlotte. We had many of their shops as customers and I ran service calls many times over the years. I was always impressed every time I stepped onto a shop floor. You've never seen a cleaner place in your life! Literally could eat off the floor. Watching the pit crew practice was always entertaining.

Hi there fellas... a driver gets points toward the championship and money depending on which place they finish in. If you don't finish, you could be in last place and get minimal points or no points and very little money. The higher place you finish the more points and money that you get. Both are very important to both the driver and the race team. That is why after fixing their cars, even if they look like rolling junk piles, they take them back on the track. There is a rule however that says that your car has to maintain a minimum speed to be able to stay out. They don't want super slow broken cars to create a safety hazard to the other drivers.

A vehicle that size going 180mph 'punches a hole' in the air, pretty big one. The air returning to fill that hole is a large source of aerodynamic drag. Speeds are still drag limited. Combine those three, and you have the NASCAR speedway effect: Fill that hole you've punched in the air with another car, and you're both going 5mph faster than any other single car because you together have less drag. Those two zip past you, and you have a choice of getting in line with them and being part of the low-drag chain, watch them storm off into the distance, or line up with another car or line of cars and see if your new "team" can catch up. Most of the time you won't see too much going on in body repairs for the fastest tracks, it's the mid to short length ovals and road courses that get the effort. If your car's aero is seriously screwed up you may not be able to run a lap fast enough to be allowed to stay on the track. The officials will most definitely pull a slow car and DNF them. And then you've got the either-or factor; if there's a caution, the crew will try to accomplish a super-fast fix during caution pit stops because the field's lapping slowly. If the race is stopped, a red flag, nobody gets to do anything repair-wise. When damage is severe, the crew can try and fix it in the garage, but they have *five minutes* before NASCAR drops them off the roster and hands them a DNF. The severe time limits breed preparation and ingenuity, there are entire "flags" of gaffer's tape in the garage the size of body panels that can just be rolled on to the car whole, and like what you saw with the concrete saw, they're figuring out the fastest way to cut off rumpled and shattered composite parts like the nose and tail panel. Want to stay remotely competitive? You have 30 seconds or less under caution to wrangle that mangled tangle. Just want to finish? 5 minutes of fury. Heh, and if there's a hole in those rules someone WILL find it. Like this one; NASCAR allows 5 men over the wall during pitting. But that's not how the rule was written... 5 men can be in the pit box. Well, the pit box was (maybe still is) defined in terms of the markings on the tarmac. Result? 2 crew members stand behind the wall and reach over to grab old tires and gas cans, and as long as they don't touch the ground, they're just fine in strict legal terms even though they're literally leaning out over the wall. It's full of little head games too, like pit road speeds being defined in MPH for cars that don't have a speedometer...

Points are different depending on the year the race was run. In the past it might be 5 points per position. Now it is generally about 1. So if you can move up a few positions it helps when they add up the points at the end of the year. In every race you are going to have cars that don't finish the race (DNF) due to a wreck or mechanical failure.

There is no penalty for not going back on the track after you get in an accident. You just lose out on driver and owner points and prize money for each race. Every position will earn some amount of points and money (unlike Indy Car or F1 where only X amount of drivers get money and points) so it's in the teams best interests to get back on the track and make the most out of it. Pre 2017, points over the course of the season are very important as championships have been decided by single digit in points and positions could be anywhere from 3, 4, or 5 points (pre-2011) or by 1 point each from 2011 onward.

THERE is a whole season and total points dictate the Champion... They will run as long as they can still get points towards the Championship... If they can stay out and others wreck out, they can pick up finishing position points... Usually if someone is running slower, they will come in before the end of the race after they can't finish any higher / lower, to be out of the way for the finish... But first and formost, it is all about points, and wrecking and being 50 laps down with a 100 or more to run gives you a chance to pick up spots / point if others have trouble and fall out...

theres 36 points races, 2 exabition races, and with todays current point system, every single point counts because someone else may fall out thats an extra point if they pass them, but unfortunatly we'll never see cars with open wheels and stuff like that anymore since they added a 5 minute repair limit, if you can't fix it and get back on the track within that limit, you're bascially disqualified is the simplest way to say it

Nascar is more about the driver skill because all the cars are equal and everyone has a chance to win u just need ur crew to make ur car Handel good and stuff but everyone has same cars where in Formula 1 the winner always has a car that's way way way better than anyone else. Like look at Lewis Hamilton he wins every race only because his car is soooo much better than all other cars and that's not fair. Make all the cars equal every race like nascar and only way to make ur car better than others is by doing the only thing u can and that's getting the handling better than others cuz everyone starts equal at everything but Formula 1 is all about technology and not that much about driver skill so of course Lewis Hamilton wins all the time cuz his car is soooo much faster and better than others
