If you think that's crazy, there's a hybrid version of the 908 FAP, a hybrid diesel v12, and the newer model (just 908) had a diesel V8. Also one of the drivers of the 908 FAP Anthony Davidson confirmed its v12 made 922 ft-lbs of torque @ 3,000 rpm. It made a bit more power than advertised too. He said it didn't really have a rev limiter, but they shifted at 3,500 - 4,000 rpm. They both were very successful in winning championships and Peugeot would've raced longer if it weren't for the poor economic situation they were in. If it's sound you want from a Peugeot, the 905 is the car you want to listen to. That era of Group C cars were essentially closed-cockpit F1 cars, so they sound phenomenal. In fact, if you get the chance, try listening to the Peugeot 905, Jaguar XJR-14, and Toyota TS010. Not only were they most competitive when they raced (the Toyota being Peugeot's only real competition), they had the best sound.

I remember going "WTF?!" when I first drove these, the R10 TDI, etc. in Gran Turismo and realized the redline started at like 6,500 rpm...doesn't sound a big deal, but for a diesel...it's bonkers!

The sound part is debatable, surely, Sauber C9 had a damn good sounding twin turbo V8, not as high revving though.

@@manne4975 Yeah. I've seen them revving past 5,500 rpm very easily, sometimes above 6,000 rpm as well.

I went to LeMans 2010 where the Audi factory team won due to the entire Peugeot team of 908’s having to retire with issues. The endurance races really do push motors to their limits and beyond. Awesome sound in person and yes, the ground vibrates and goes right through to your teeth!

​@JON471983 it's definitely an incredible experience. I went in 2015, Porsche 919 vs Audi R18 was a good one though Porsche had the edge. A highlight for me was how dirty the Corvette's sounded compared to everything else. Went to the 2016 classic as well, that's a different kind of special seeing the endless list of rare cars taking to the track.

@@shadybacon3451 I agree the C6's sounded awesome, there was another sound that was unmatched by the diesel P1/P2 cars, the "007" Aston Martin DBR9 V12..i'm sure the announcer said that 2010 was the last time these V12's would race in the 24 heuers du mans. Although I could be wrong. It was also the year that a black GT40 piloted by 3 Swiss ladies burst into flames on the Mulsanne and Nigel Mansell Crashed early on and had to retire. So many memories, I can barely believe it was so long ago!

Peugeot boosted the power output from 1000Nm to 1200Nm without redesigning the crankshaft. That's what caused the failure. Otherwise their engines were reliable on any other day.

This makes me miss the ALMS Series so much. Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in 2010/2011 had these Peugeot's topping 200 mph on the straight! The speed differential and closing speeds between the fastest class, LMP1, and the slowest class, GTC. was insane. The Pug's were nearly 18 seconds a lap faster than the Porsche GTC cars!

In a documentairy, I think it was about Audis R18 Ultra (don't quote me on that please, I don't remember that well), they said something along the lines of: "Sound is just wasted energy" or something. Idk if that's true.

I really like your honest reaction of such facts. It is a little odd from our european perspective but it's ok. Anyway, the reason for existing of this car is Audi's LeMans victory back in 2006 with their ludacris attempt to win the ultimate endurance race with a diesel powered car. That's how the legendary Audi R10 TDI was born. That's why Europe (and not only) gone mad about diesel cars back in mid 2000s. It was a perfect advertise. That is the reason of rise of The Volkswagen group to a top produser back in the middle of the last decade. And all followed attempts of taking them down such as Diesel gate scandal. But that's another topic to discuss.

Peugeot is well kown in France to be "Diesel cars' king" They made several strong, multi-purpose cars, almost every time diesel. Peugeot 504 (break) Stllls the only car to survive 50 years in sahara as a daily working beast. When they built diesel race cars, we kew that it will be fantastic... And because of Peugeot: german remember that they had invented diesel... ;-)

If I am not wrong, I think they rev at around 5800 rpm. Yes Belgian Motorsport is a great channel to listen to all kind of new and old cars. Watching it for many years!

After driving it for a full 24 hours around Le Mans in Gran Tourimo on the PS3 I fell in love with the 908. Yes, i really drove the car for 24 real hours over a long weekend. It was mind numbing in the end. However the night section was great and sunrise at La Sarthe was beautiful.

I'm surprised you didn't ask what FAP means, Ian, since you're usually very curious about car-related terms or abbreviations that you're not familiar with. FAP is what you call in English DPF and yes, diesel particle filters are not exclusive to normal road cars, diesel burning, full on race prototypes also had them. Did you notice that the 908 didn't smoke one bit? 😉

Diesel is pretty neat in economy racing. Can run very lean and boosted. In theory it consumes 20% less fuel. Those huge turbos make engines really silent.

Audi built a Diesel LMP car about the same time. The main idea behind using a Diesel engine is, that it runs longer with the same amount of fuel as a gas engine car holds. This way a Diesel can save several pit stops in a 24h race - which translates into minutes of saved time. And yes, they dont rev as high as a gas engine, but stil to about 7 or 8000 rpm.

R8 & r10 werent full mental as the 908,great racing cars with a lot of wins maybe the best audi has ever built but not crazy cars , hell even the r15 & r15+ werent ,the r18 was a crazy one at 1st(till porsche & toyota).Remember how fast the 908 was and only years later Toyota(in a way the evolution version of the 908) was faster,granted not reliable as the audi r8/r10/r15+/ r18 maybe a bit better than only the basic r15.

Peugeot went diesel because the technical regs favored it at the time. And they wanted to sell HDIs. This was peak diesel era, with the dieselization of the european car fleet in full force.

​@@sidewalkere the technical regs favored petrol cars. There just was no manufacturer that spent even close the amount of money on the development of a petrol LMP1 at the time. Audi and Peugeot used Diesel race cars purely for marketing reasons, since most of their road cars were Diesel powered as well.

Now, i'm not claiming to be any kind of expert, just a nerdy motorsport enthusiast, but at the time even the press and commentators opinion was unanimous: even if they were made to level the playing field, diesel had the edge, reg wise. And it was normal, the big dogs wanted to compete with diesel, to sell diesel cars, so they got what they wanted. Once Toyota and Porsche joined with petrol cars, the regs did eventually level out and, well, gasoline is just better for this job.. Then dieselgate happened driving the final nail in that chapters coffin.

@@sidewalkere Yes, when Toyota joined, the regs leveled out. Petrol cars were slowed down, so that Toyota would not run away with it. They were slowed down before the 2012 season started, in anticipation of how strong Toyota might be. Then since Toyota still had a power advantage there was another minor adjustment before the 2013 season. The press and commentators opinions are just opinions, they are not always right. Just look at the hybrid era, when everybody "knew" that the hybrid cars had an advantage. Yet when the hybrid system failed on a Porsche at Spa and on an Audi at Fuji they still were faster than any of the privateer cars, proving that their speed advantage had absolutely nothing to do with the hybrid. Hybrid cars did not have an inherent advantage, and Diesel cars did not have an inherent advantage. Manufacturer teams are just always way faster than privateer teams operating on 5-10% of the budget. In both cases (Diesel vs. Petrol from '06 - '11 and Hybrid vs. Non-Hybrid from '14 - '20) ACO started out with the intention of creating an equal playing field. Whether they ever succeeded in that is difficult to judge. But in both cases they eventually changed to intentionally favoring one rule set over the other, in order to close the gap between manufacturers and privateers. Thats how petrol cars ended up with a technical advantage in 2009 - '11, and how Non-Hybrid cars ended up with a huge advantage from 2016 onwards. There just was never a private team strong enough to make use of that advantage. Besides: When Audi decided to race a Diesel car, the rules for that did not even exist yet. They had to ask ACO to change the rules and allow Diesels. While ACO were working out the details Peugeot decided to join as well. So it is absolutely wrong to say either of them went Diesel because the rules favored it. They both went Diesel long before they knew what the rules would even be.

Turbo diesels are not necessarily torquey at low revs. The ones well before the TDI era were, many TDI-style engines aren't. Torque mainly is a function of a piston engine's stroke length. Long stroke = long lever on the crankshaft = high torque. When it comes to revving, there is a limit to what piston speed the oil film on the cylinder wall can handle. But long stroke = high piston velocity, obviously. Around 25m/s is considered the limit, if I remember right. This, in turn, means that when you want to rev an engine to over 10000 rpm, you have to limit the stroke length. This also reduces the torque you get from your engine. You get compensated with many horsepowers, obviously. As with direct injecting engines there is no risk of early ignition, they can reach boost pressures impossible with intake injection engines. They are on the other hand very messy with their exhaust gases. Every combustion begins very oxygen rich which basically means the generation of nitrous oxides from the 78% atmospheric N₂ is a feature with them. Atmospheric chemistry makes it a bug as they form nitric acid with water. Nitric acid is highly aggressive against carbohydrate compounds. From a chemical point of view that is exactly what all living tissue is, though. In short: You want shitty unhealthy compounds in your exhaust? Make a direct fuel injection engine!

Hi IWrocker. Remember this Peugeot is in the Gran Turismo 6 Time attack challenge. Try Spa Race Circuit or Le Mans with manual gears. Maximum 3 wheels over curbs allowed. The 4th wheel gives a penalty and you have to make a new try. That big V12 diesel sound is magic.

So instead of LMP1 we now have the watered down Hypercar and LMDH. If they had made LMH 200kg lighter then it would have been an really interesting category.

i love these smooth running diesel that sound more like a jet turbine than an agricultural 24liter beast from the 50s :D nothing wrong with the beast either :D but this turbine sounding diesels sound so good when they take off at the lights

The thing with diesel engines is that they can't go above 6500 RPM or else there is a risk of premature ignition because the valve opening times of the inlet valve overlaps with the opening times of the outlet valve. The low rpm makes them quieter than the high revving engines. The diesel powered cars won races and championships bc they had to refuel less. They also had different places where thr cars stood out than the petrol powered ones. Diesel cars were very fast exiting corners and bc of the low RPM they had to do some tricks with the gearbox to make it work (I believe the Audi R8 diesel was the first with a 7 or 8 gear gearbox)

Nope, none diesel can run up to 6500 rpm because the burning delay from the diesel fuel is very slow, the max RPM for a correct burning is ~5000

The diesel LMP1s were much quieter than anything else on the track. The onboards are kind of cool, tho, with a deep, growly tone. Not amazing, but cool. Should watch some. From 2006 to 2014 every 24h of LeMans winner was a diesel, but the 908 only won one , all others were Audi, the last ones were diesel-hybrids even. Peugeot often had the faster car, but Audi had experience and reliability. This was way before the Dieselgate thing of course, and the technical regs were slanted in favor of diesel. Nowadays no one would touch the stuff, I think. 😅

I remember an interview with one of the drivers. He said that he always tried to keep gearchanges at around 3,500 - 4000 rpm He also mentioned that the it was an absolute monster to drive. Cause at around 3000 rpm the torque went a bit over 900 ft lb.

I drive a small turbo diesel Citroën (Peugeot sister company) hatchback (1.6L), it redlines at 6000 rpm, so I wouldn't be too surprised if the Peugeot 908 could rev out to 8000rpm The thing with diving a diesel vs and equivalent petrol (gasoline) car is you learn to shift up gears earlier and drive lower in the rev range, focusing on the torque curve rather than the power curve of the engine, you want to change gears to keep the engine in the optimal torque range, In my car, redline is 6k rpm, but after 3k rpm there's basically nothing left, the turbo doesn't kick in till 1250 rpm so you want to avoid being too low in the rev range too (a diesel with no turbo can be very sluggish). having said all that, get it right change into gear at 1300 rpm and stomp on the accelerator and all that torque (2-3x the torque of an equivalent petrol car) is a pile of fun, plus when approaching a corner, let your foot off the accelerator and drop gear and the compression braking is such you don't really need brakes, so it makes for a lot of fun driving, combine this with longer times between stops for fuel and it's a really enjoyable experience.

no my dear, the redline from all diesel is 5000rpm (or less) because the burning delay from diesel fuel is very slow...if rev over, is the unburned fuel trown out the exaust...

Sir,allow me to disagree on the ,,turbo kick''. It is not the turbo,but the air obturator you have intalled right behind the flowmeter,wich is controlled with a step by step motor by the ECU,wich opens and you feel that ,,kick'' If you don't believe me,try a Megane 2,1.5DCI,wich have free airflow...it pushes you into the chair at 800 rpm and when you shift ,the turbine remains at around 10 000rpm,so a lot a pressure forms in the intake circuit(i tweaked mine to not lower the variable geometry,so it reaches 3 bars) ,so after you shift and push the acceleration...once made a friend of mine with a Porche to stop and raise the hood,he thot it is something wrong with his car,hahaha

I used to simulation race online in a game called GTR2. There was a Le Mans & ALMS league. When i qualified for a P1 class car? I chose the P1 "PUG" 908 over the Audi R15. Great prototype race car.

They are one of few race team to take advantage of having a large amount of torque in a light weight car, combined with longer gearing it doesn't even need to rev high to go fast.

Believe it or not but one of the engine specs that come in the Audi Q7 was a 5.2 v12 diesel and it’s VW baby brother was a 5.0 v10

Couldn't find any facts about maximum motor rotation rates but at the 'AUDI Media Center' they mentioned that the R10 TDI-Drivers have already switched gears at 5.000 rpm.

Diesel racecars are more common than you think. The first Diesel to win the le Mans 24h Was the AUDI R10TDi in 2006. In the following years AUDI even combined a Diesel with an electric engine in the R15 and R18 models.

My only experience of this is on the game Gran Turismo fully upgraded was scary as anything even in a game. I had to dial the traction control on open the gear ratios way higher to stop it from spinning with the slightest touch of the throttle.

The first thing you hear with the Audi and Peugeot diesels is the aero, the air over the body, in the vents, the induction roar and the brake rotors singing, then as they pass you get the diesel hmmm.

Diesels used to be more common in some racing disciplines, particularly endurance. That has died off over the years as they switch over to hybrid.

They all went diesel after Audi's, because of fuel consumption, stints were longer with less fuel stops saving huge amounts of time. Then environmentalist's got involved and it was the end of diesel era.

Less fuel stops in long races would be one advantage for diesel.

They had an equivalence factor, so that the power and fuel range were similar between petrol and Diesel powered cars. That was skewed slightly one way or the other, but for a while the Diesels had the advantage.

For reference regarding Newton-meters: One Newton is the force of gravity at sea level on Earth. (The strength of gravity changes depending on altitude and to a lesser degree location) So yeah. That's a shit ton of torque. 1200 times the force of gravity.

Diesel is very efficient in long distance race. Audi was the first manufacturer who won 24h of Le Mans with a diesel engine in 2006. Alle Le Mans winner cars between 2006 and 2014 were diesel or diesel hybrid cars. Peugeot won one time in 2009 with the 908 HDI and Audi won all other races with the Audi R10, Audi R15 and R18 / R18 e-tron.

@@automation7295you can’t sell them in the US but you can drive them, I live by the border of New Mexico and Mexico and cars from Mexico cross the border all the time that are weird cars we don’t get 😎🎉 so I’ve been lucky to see some Renaults and Peugeots among others

You are not really Correct Ian about the Loudness. Doesels are louder at Idle because Individual Explosions are High Pressure and stronger due to Fuel Energy. Gasoline Engines are louder at Rpm Because Lower pressure Exhaust Has gaps and creates Reverb. On top Of that Diesel Explosion Lasts for 1/3 of the cycle Gasoline lasts for 2/3 to fully Burn the Fuel. So at High RPM A lot of Gasoline leaves Unburned in Performance engines. On Top of That, Turbo Muffles further. Diesels are Loud and Dirty is just a Industry Propagande. Only Time Diesels are louder is At Idle.

Yeah, he's shifting a much lower revs than any petrol engined cars. Obviously that torque comes in at a lower max revs than we're used to hearing.

The Turbos restrict the Sound, and if we talk about a Diesel, they have Turbos with a smaller Turbine than the Gasoline ones to get more power at low RPM, so they sound very quiet.

The FAP/DPF (Diesel particulate filter) has a further "silencer side-effect" after the turbos.

F1 is not diesel but race gas, it might even still be leaded as is more high octane race gas.

m8 you have to look at us 2 strokers in germany or austria. i only say 80cc and up to 30 hp to the wheelz and more. scooterattack and gooseracing are good channels.

Peugeot is famous to be one of the first brand who putted diesel engine in average cars. In the 70's the Peugeot 504 diesel was considered as undestructible (and it still is because most of bush taxis in western africa are Peugeot 504 diesel...today...50 years after with 50 time the trip to the moon on the dashboard...undestructible) But the first brand which won Le Mans with a diesel wasn't Peugeot but Audi onboard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJjOm2CDgJl5mNU

Synchronicity We created these after we tuned our 2001 vw jetta TDI running 26 psi all day no problem with out reducing fuel economy it was so dominant at 24 hours lemans they penalize fuel turbo weight still won 1st 2nd 3rd three years in a row then Peugeot created their own TDI to compete with Audi if you can’t beat them join them love you family

It does have a similar sound to a old prop plane flying by, similar engines. Low revving 12cyl+ engines, big torque. Biggest difference would be that old props didn't use Diesel and their displacement was like 27l. Ps, not as good sounding as a Leopard 2 MTU MB 873 Ka-501engine.

I have a 30yo 1.5l turbo diesel and the red line is at 5000 rpm and it sounds like a tractor when idling and can push up to 180kmh it's like trying sui cide. Also brands like volvo, Mercedes, audio etc you can barely hear them. You American diesels are just made to please some special mentalities that I wouldn't want to be friends with

There's a classic cars race in my birthtown since 1975 (course des remparts Angoulême). This competition was created as a tribute to the "grand prix d'Angoulême" which existed from the 30's to the 50's (one edition was won by a certain Juan Manuel Fangio). Just about everyone "thinks" diesels pollute the most, but they really don't. They have a DPF on the exhaust. Here in UK we have road tax, which is an annual payment based on vehicle emissions - - everyone here knows it's just another tax for the motorist to absorb. It costs more to tax a 1.2 Vx Corsa than a 2.2 Merc C class.................. I'd love for the green brigade to explain that one. And don't get me started on "electric" vehicles - - they pollute more during the manufacture than any other vehicle ever will

Whe have another surprise: the speed record (405km/h) from the Le Mans 24h race, is a WM P88, fitted with a V6 PRV tune up by Peugeot Sport (2,9L twin turbo), yes the same "weak engine" you can find in the De Lorean DMC12...but in the WM did the engine produce 910hp and won the 24h endurance race!

Fact is it didn't even finish the race and the WM team retired the car once they recorded the top speed. They retired the car after only 59 laps while the *actual winner* of the race the Jaguar XJR-9 managed 394 laps after 24 hours. WM's top speed record was *bragging rights* alone. The WM P88 was *hopeless* around the track and some 26 seconds(!!) slower than the fastest car around a full lap. For the 1988 LeMans 24 Hours there were these qualifying times: 1. Ludwig / Stuck / Bell Porsche 962 C Porsche AG 3:15.640 2. Wollek / Schuppan / van der Merwe Porsche 962 C Porsche AG 3:18.620 4. Brundle / Nielsen Jaguar XJR-9 LM Silk Cut Jaguar 3:21.780 (won the race itself) 36 (!!) Haldi / Raulet / Dorchy WM P88 Peugeot Secateva 3:41.480 Yes, the WM P88 Peugeot qualified almost *26 seconds slower* than the pole sitting Porsche 962 C. So it was nowhere near the front runners at any point of the race. They only cranked up the boost and set-up a low-downforce mode and went for the top speed record on the Mulsanne straight. It's not worth any points or anything so they just used it as bragging rights. Like I said. Here's the WIki entry for the 1988 LeMans and the WM-P88 "A notable piece of history was made in the mid-evening. The WM team was having a poor race; with the second car already out having broken its CV-joint leaving the pit-lane. The new car had been delayed by a number of problems including the cooling, electronics, fuel pump and distributor. With the night cooling down, at 9:30pm they brought the P88 back into the pits for a do-or-die attempt at the speed record. Every space was taped over to minimise sir resistance, and the twin-turbos wound right up to over 900 bhp. Roger Dorchy took the car out, knowing he would only have a couple of laps but he took his chance and was officially clocked at an incredible 405 kp/h (252 mph) on the back straight. And sure enough, the engine, starved of cooling air, blew up - but it was mission accomplished and a place in racing history - the first car to break 400 kp/h at Le Mans." PORSCHE 935K is a silhouette racecar with a twin turbo from the seventies, looks like a beast, sounds like a beast and acts like a beast. It's one of those engines that sounds unhappy and pissed off when running idle.
