2:50:18 What a tremendous plot-twist to decide the outcome of this criminally underrated race. If racing to the caution wasn’t still being practiced, Jeff Gordon more than likely would’ve won. Anyone can come to realize just how perilous racing back really was - But look at the thrilling scenarios it allowed, like this one... Without it having to be manufactured and fake...Maybe, just maybe, racing back wasn’t so bad after all
@MatthewGross87
@MatthewGross87 4 жыл бұрын
They should honestly just have another flag that signifies the caution will come out the next time the leader crosses the line. Just use a color not in circulation yet (maybe orange or purple). When an incident happens, Nascar can throw a yellow flag or this other colored flag. When the yellow flag comes out, the filed is instantly frozen just like now, but in the majority of instances, they could throw this other colored flag which means the caution will come out when the leader next crosses the line. You really only need to freeze the field instantly in about 5 or 10 percent of incidents.
@LorenzoBrunoBossio
@LorenzoBrunoBossio 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Gross it doesn't need to be that convoluted. They could just throw the Yellow or Red flags - Yellow meaning you can race back, Red meaning it’s not safe to do so, hold your track position and slow down. Instead of implementing something like this back in 2003, Brian France exterminated an aspect of NASCAR that made it unique and thrilling in its own way that stood out from other Motorsports.

Amazing that Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth, and Kevin Harvick are the only active drivers today who raced in 2002. I believe 2001 also (Jimmie had only a handful of races i think). They got to compete with Dave Marcis, who competed in the 60s and 70s with guys who raced in the 40s and 50s. The opening race to the first full season of Cup that I ever watched. It's weird as I'm watching it now that I can still feel remnants of what I felt during this race as an 8 year old. I had tentatively chosen Gordon as my driver after seeing his showcar at a local Lowes (because lol flames) and when the first big one happened my brother had teased me about him being in it. Luckily, a few moments later he was shown still driving but that broke my damn heart for a second. Granted, I became a Mayfield fan from week 2 forward given name similarity to my own. Gosh, what a nostalgia trip this is.

We were there 20 years ago, what a race it was. It was a gorgeous day. Jimmie Johnson’s first Daytona 500, (his first pole position winner) We saw that eagle during the National Anthem. The Superstretch grandstands were still there. Sterling Marlin got out of his car during a red flag to work on his front fender and got a penalty, and Wa’ad Burton was the race winner. What a difference when compared to todays races that consist of 1/3: *door, hood, visor, or trunk cam nonsense.* We just saw a *camera view of multiple cars racing together from a distance.* We just saw *what our favs were doing;* instead of camera shots so close that you only see 1 or 2 cars, or the above *which is intended to show an ad on the dash.* We just saw a race w/o odd *"behind the fence views" that actually make it harder to see whats happening,* or constant replays of *what we just saw while under green* [like we can't/didn't see it] which causes us to miss whats happening which causes more replays...hmm. *I really miss the old NASCAR days in a number ways.*

A guy in Super GT just got penalized for messing with his fender under a red flag. First thing I thought of was this race...

I remember Sterling Marlin jumping out of the car and tried to fix it. It was sad because he lost the race because of it

24:20 A small puff of smoke came out of #20 entering turn 1. That's where his engine died on him too soon.

I love NASCAR so much. I never understood the idea of running away from the pack. You need the pack's energy to make the most runs. Smaller packs = less energy

As a die hard Mopar fan this was epic with the #22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid of Ward Burton winning the big Daytona 500 🥇 Dodge came out of the box pretty good with Sterling Marlin who kicked ass for a few seasons but unfortunately was severely hurt & Rocket Ryan Newman winning the Daytona 500 as well & Brad Keselowski winning the 2010 Exfinity Series Championship in a Dodge Challenger & won the 2012 Nascar Cup Series Championship in Dodge’s last year which was bitter sweet but as they say they went out on top & in this case it was Dodge. Another cool stat here is the great #43 Richard Petty with his 200 cup wins, 191 of them came in a Dodge or Plymouth 🏁

I always found Benny's comment about it being almost impossible to win a championship after winning a race funny considering the previous 4 champions at that point (Gordon, Jarrett, Labonte, Gordon) locked up their titles a week early and could have missed the final race, or really any other race during the season.

Creepy...... Earnhardt dies in the 2001 Daytona race, they honor him and others on lap 3 here while Tony Stewart drops out of the race, Ward Burton ends up winning, then years later, Stewart ends up ending the life of Kevin Ward Jr
