I picked this up after watching this video a year ago and it's been an awesome solution for my media needs. I acttually attached the TR-004 and it's been a great flexible solution for all my needs.

I bought a higher end Qnap NAS a couple of years ago, eventually got it all set up near enough to what I wanted, had it serving my website & being my data store that I could access remotely. Then all the qnap attacks started. I no longer feel it’s safe to have my NAS open to the net, so I look it off line and battened down the hatches. It’s such a pity, I have a really expensive sledgehammer and I’m using it to knock in tiny tacks now.

Love the review, looking for a replacement for my 10 year old 4 bay QNAP. Can you fit 2.5 SATA SSDs in the bays as standard? How noisy is the fan in this, as looking for a quiet system. Thanks!

Looking at the QNAP site for the TS464, it says to use QNAP memory. Is that a "must" of just the standard line adn in fact you can put any branded memory in? I can see you cen get 8gb of Crucial SODIMM DDR4 3200mhz for £21 a stick which seems like a bargain if it would wokr in this

Outstanding first look at the QNAP TS-464. Currently I have the TS-653D and while there isn’t a massive feature upgrade with the new line there are some noteworthy differences of which the built in NVMe support and SoC bump up to N5105 are welcomed. I had to install a QNAP QM2 card to get NVMe and 10GbE support which just adds to the out of pocket expense. Keep up the good work. I look forward to follow up reviews which I’m sure will be great too. Cheers!

One of the advantages that this,QNAP TS-464, has over your TS-653D is PCIe 3; which is about twice as fast, theoretically, as the PCIe 2 in your TS-653D. Plus the CPU as 2 extra PCIe lanes.
@jodajackson4489
@jodajackson4489 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahothabeth The TS-464 also officially supports 16GB of RAM. Naturally I still upgraded the TS-653D to 16GB with no ill effects but it’s preferable to have official support. The bump up in PCIe spec is nice but an additional PCIe slot would have been ideal. One PCIe slot just isn’t enough but one would think you’d have to step up to a higher end model / line for two PCIe slots.
@ahothabeth
@ahothabeth 2 жыл бұрын
@@jodajackson4489 One of the problem with these class of CPUs is that they don't have a large number of PCIe lane to start with; J4125 has 6 lane and the n5105 has 8. lanes. So QNAP could add more slots but there would be no PCIe lanes to service them. Or each slot might only have a single PCIe lane each; which would result in sub-standard performance. The QNAP TVS-672X which has an i3-8100T which has 16 PCIe lanes and does support dual slot, but the price is far higher. IF these QNAPs have a Platform Controller Hub (PCH), then PCH could have PCIe lanes that might be used, but these would be slower than CPU PCIe lanes.

I just bought the TS-464 for a small business and want to run Virtualization Station. The NAS came with 4GB of RAM (ADATA ADS2666J4G19-BSSZ). What would the compatible Crucial RAM be to bump up the memory?

Hi, I have been watching a few of your vids as I consider needs for a docu-series I am developing in Bali, Indonesia. First, thank you for the great, concise information you provide - much appreciated! What I am looking at is a remote NAS set-up on a mobile van for production that we can dump SD content shot on Canon C70 cameras immediately after they are filled up and then hopefully have redundancy with that footage sync'd to another NAS server (TV series) back in our edit suite. Does this sound plausible to you and if so, what would you recommend as best QNAP gear for the job? Thanks.

Hi, I saw in QNAP HCL for TS-453A that some HDD (ST8000VN0004 8TB) would require specific trays due to screw holes set up in a different manner. Are the new trays for TS-464 fully compatible with all disks now ?

At 16:43 you mention HDMI 2.0, it's 2.1 according to the spec sheet.
@nascompares
@nascompares Жыл бұрын
That might have been an upgrade to the hardware that occurred since this review. QNAP have a history of doing this and never mention it - like when they upgraded the Intel core on the TVS-1282 series from an 6th gen i5 to a 7th/8th Gen... It's ANNOYINGLY nice...though built on hardware availability, more than any form of charity tbh

April 19, 2022 - "QNAP urges customers to disable UPnP port forwarding on routers" why doesn't qnap just fix their stuff to be secure by default... This garbage of pushing security problems onto their customers is not right. Shame too because the hardware looks not bad

Would Plex running on the NAS be able to transcode media using the GPU for remote users? It's not clear to me if the GPU is only leveraged when using the HDMI port on the back.

Yes, you can GPU decode when accessing the NAS locally or remotely. The HDMI port will have nothing to do with the process.

You'll need a Plex Pass subscription to enable hardware (GPU) acceleration in PMS. And choose a Intel system (like this one) if you want hardware acceleration.

I can't find this model on q-nap website, closest thing is TBS-464 which is a different beast. Btw, based on current prices one can easily build their own NAS with far better CPU and ram, $150 motherboard, $200 cpu, $100 psu, $50 8gb ddr4 ram. Jonsbo case $200, FreeNAS software, free. Typical 4gb celeron or atom based NAS costs $800+ (figures are in AUD)
@nascompares
@nascompares 2 жыл бұрын
Morning dude. I think it's only available in the East right now, with the west to follow in a month or so (if you are in AUS, you might get it sooner than us!). Also, if NAS were just hardware, then yes, you could buy and build better and save maybe 20% tops than an Home/SMB NAS like this one... But you got to factor the 24x7 cooling, design, time to build (eg what your time is worth), setting up software such as UNRAID and TrueNAS (you'll need more power for that one) and then all the 'death of a thousand cuts' hurdles that you go through later with software and learning the ropes in a DiY build.... Basically...I'm saying q NAS' pricetag is not just the hardware, it's about a tailored solution that arrives prebuilt, is more user friendly, designed for its purchase across all components and the whole thing is q single warranty (except drives of course!). It's a question of time Vs experience Vs Money .. if you have two/three of those, then a DiY solution makes sense.
@NickG_
@NickG_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@nascompares I feel like you've had to explain this a dozen times, sorry about that and you do have fair points, however in my case as a "power user" I'm having a hard time justifying the cost and I just don't like to be put into this position, it should be a no brainier to go with a ready solution but when it costs less and you get more bang for your bucks to go DIY then it becomes a hard decision. Sure these NAS companies do work on the software, go through R&D and iron out a lot of issues as they should but its not like they have developed their own network protocols, file systems, RAID or anything new or of their own, its more or less a stripped down computer (slightly more powerful than a Raspberry PI) bundled with enclosure and software full of open source technologies (some could be paid) with addition of limited support. Finally, my point is, IMO they are charging too much for what they are offering and I hope that NAS manufacturers do read this considering what your channel is all about, and adjust their pricing model, perhaps make it based on use case licensing, number of users etc so that a power user or an IT professional can try their products for personal use without having to pay the same money you would expect from a business.
