Naseer sahab is entitled to his point of view! However some of the best of his own works came about not in films of Shyam Babu and Mrinal Da but in those of Gautam Ghosh (Paar), Nihalani(Akrosh and Ardha Satya), Saeed Mirza ( Albert Pinto...) Vijaya Mehta (Pestonji) Sai Paranjape(Sparsh), Ketan Mehta(Mirch Masala), Kundan Shah(Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron) and countless others. One reason for his own frustration could be that the late Om Puri outdid him in a genre that he perhaps believed he owned! Naseer himself made forays into commercial cinema, which he blames parallel film makers for doing. However in doing so, both he and the parallel cinema movement impacted the contemporary crass commercial cinema in a manner that film making improved drastically, with new directors and technicians arriving, more aware of their social responsibility, more realistic in their approach, new actors arriving in the so called commercial cinema much more aware of the great legacy of the Naseer sahab and Om dada! Who would have thought of Nawaz Siddiqi as a viable commercial actor -- a sex symbol even in tyhe 21st century, had it not been for Naseer and the film makers he claims to be disappointed with! And what they did in the seventies and eighties. We have to remember that there was no studio system, no multiplexes with small seating capacities and films found exhibition with great difficulty. It kept many film makers at near poverty levels. Also, with great deferance I would have to say that the movement was not confined to just Hindi cinema. Great many film makers like Adoor Gopalakrishnan Shaji Karun, Aravindan, Girish Kasarvalli, Utpalendu Chakravarty came from regional cinema to create a treat for an audience that made an extra effort to reach out and find their cinema. Any which way one looks at it Indian cinema is much better off today with Naseeruddin Shah and his mates making major contributions in it's evolution!

Enjoyed reading your comments. Rarely on Indian KZbin video one gets to read such enriching comments. I have watched some of these movies like Paar and Mirch Masala. They were not half hearted.

Art cinema needs an audience, in the past it had an audience now it does not. Art cinema requires brutal honesty, now someone or the other will be offended by it so no one wants to take the risk.

To some extent I agree that some art film makers got stuck in the idea that an extremely slow moving film devoid of story and plot was a good film. A good film does not necessarily needs to change people's thinking but it should at least get people starting to think differently. There are so many ideas and stories in real life that are more entertaining than fiction they just have to be presented on screen in a balanced way. Many film makers got too smart and lost their way.

Satyajit Ray and ritwik ghatak.... At least you should talked about Ritwik, he wasn't that popular in commercial cinema but is worshipped all over the world. I agree what Nasir suggested, but like everyone bread and butter is imp for him

So true, Art films are often caught up in a web of always trying too hard to be meaningful or make a statement and its not everyday that one comes across great concepts or ideas. One filmmakers narcissistic approach cannot work every time, look at SLB, he keeps repeating the same films every time, same old love triangles. But what I don’t understand is the clear demarcation between meaningful or Art cinema and regular mainstream cinema. This rigid mentality of the mainstream filmmakers like Rohit Shetty and Farah Khan and the likes where they believe: to make a successful film in India it needs to be devoid of common sense and thats why they keep making all these trashy films with 5-10 songs, item numbers and lame sexist jokes thinking this is what the mass wants but its time they stopped feeding them this. If you made good sensible films with the right balance of entertainment and content then even people’s tastes would develop with time. The mass wants to sit at home and do nothing all day and fight among each other but thats not how things work they educate themselves, get a job and face many challenges. The mass can change but you need to believe in them.

He is not lesser than Morgan Freeman in acting skills.. just see his films like Aakrosh, Sparsh, Mirch Masala, Bazaar, Peston ji, Encounter, Firaq to name a few and then decide… we people have tendency of praising only western talent, it does not mean that I am demeaning Morgan Freeman….

#1. Wiki defines parallel cinema starting from 1950s, Nasuruddin mentions 1970s . don't know which parallel world is he talking about. He conveniently mentions two artists but how can anyone forget Satyjit Ray? #2. If they were not 'evolving' then why had he 'faith' in them? (self -contradictory). Parallel cinema was truly the golden age . Films of those era are featured among the list containing greates of all times. Commerce of those cinema is altogether different thing.
