Power can be understood through various structural perspectives. The class-based view developed by Marx and Engels places power in the ownership of the means of production, creating a bourgeois class that controls power to the detriment of workers, who make up a dependent class. This disparity inevitably leads to class conflict.
Another perspective, the elite theory of power, divides society into a dominant and dependent class but attributes the influence of the dominant class (elite) to competence, excellence, and aptitude. However, this does not hold in Nigeria, where political elites have increasingly become a burden on the state.
This interview with Nasir El-Rufai, conducted before his tenure as the governor of Kaduna State, delves into the intricacies of power in Nigeria. It particularly focuses on Obasanjo's politics and his controversial third-term agenda.
