I had just turned 18 when Illmatic came out. I'm from New Orleans and we were heavy into our "bounce" rap. Nationally, West Coast rap (Dre's Chronic, Snoop, Cube, etc) was killing everything. An older homie asked if I had heard a cat from NY named Nas. I hadn't. We jumped into his ride and BOOM...this brother's music has been with me since then. Through my growth and setbacks. My good. My bad. My smart. My stupid. My books. My streets. My solo prowl. My family man swag. Nas' music has grown with me and many others from our generation. Salute to you brother.
