They just spent $130 million to renovate it less than 5 years ago. Underneath it is a convention center that isn't used anymore. Perhaps the whole arena could be converted into a convention center.

The Nassau Coliseum was just renovated 3 years ago, I know their AHL affiliate is only like 70 miles away but they should move the Sound Tigers to coliseum imo (proximity would be amazing and 13,917 would be like the 7th largest arena in the AHL).

The Coliseum was not renovated, it just got a face lift, all of the original problems it had that fans complained about were still there after spending hundreds of millions of dollars, there was not enough bathrooms and the concourse was horrendously tiny. Both still are major issues, the arena that Bridgeport currently plays in is hands down a better facility than the Coliseum

@@Duck_Boi556 I'm a Sound Tigers/ Islanders fan. The Sound Tigers really long lease forbids them from moving unless another AHL affiliate comes in immediately. Bridgeport Wolf Pack has a nice ring to it. Rangers would love to move affiliate closer to MSG. Sound Tigers at the Nassau Coliseum would be like the Philadelphia Phantoms at the Spectrum. It'll only last as long as the building exists. But the Coliseum was just renovated whereas the Spectrum was never renovated.

Mike Farino Are you an Isles fan? I’m not but the Colosseum/NYCB has been around for 50+ years in Uniondale for hockey predominantly. I see that there is Nets G-League team and NLL Riptide as tenets but wouldn’t the Islanders AHL affiliate make the most sense to pack the arena, if it were to stay open? And wouldn’t it be ideal to you have your affiliate 11 miles away?

Charles Wang wanted to proposed the Lighthouse Project in 2007 that would of rebuilt the Coliseum so it would meet the NHL standards and include retail shops. It was turned down at the time due to the opposition in taxes for the community. They should of done it then but the recession didnt help. Sad to see the Coliseum go

The great thing about NVMC was that the ceiling was so low. No lie, if you were at the last row in the upper deck, you could touch the roof. It made the building sooooo loud even with a smaller crowd (I mean even if the place was half full). The new place will have a low ceiling as well so hopefully we can still have that vibe.

Been fortunate enough to visit a lot of arenas across the league. Nassau Coliseum is a great building to watch a game at. Sightlines are great, superb atmosphere. It is a Hockey Arena. If this building has seen it's last NHL, it's a damn shame. It will be missed. Thanks for the memories, Fort Never-Lose.

The Islanders are going through what the New Jersey Devils went through before moving to Prudential. Nassau is a pain in the ass to get to from the city. When a game is over, there was absolutely nothing around. Not even a public bathroom. You gotta call a cab to get back to the station. It’s intentional. The arena was for the die hards who like to tailgate. Now, I already got the e-mail that Belmont Arena is ready for hockey. A little better (walking distance from station) but you gotta go through the LIRR. I doubt they go back to Barclays unless Belmont has a problem. I’ll miss Barclays. I used to be able to see 2 NHL games on the weekends. One matinee and one at night between the Devils, Isles, & Rangers within 25-35 min each other. That was hockey heaven.

Prudential Center is awful, and the team is the NJ not NY Devils. There are no hockey fans in Newark, and I have not gone to a Devils game since they left the Meadowlands, good riddance.

Eric Vigod Begging your pardon but I clearly wrote “New Jersey Devils.” And I’m going to disagree about Prudential. I got die hard Joisey fans from Waretown, NJ who HATED driving to the Medowlands just to pay for parking and seeing them during the Cup years. Today NHL teams rely on tourist NHL fans to buy up seats. Prudential serves that. Also the tickets are VERY affordable. Devils vs Rangers I paid $125/seat 5 rows from the ice. At the Garden, it’s $450-950. It definitely pales in comparison to the Rangers & Isles (at Barclays) and the seating at Prudential is arguably much closer to the action. Certainly not the perfect arena but it feels more intense. Just one man’s opinion.

Yesss came here to say what a PITA it is to get to Nassau by public transit omg. And yep the facilities are not great. As the ultimate hockey tourist (I'm from Scotland and trying to see all the teams at home...15/31 so far but can't imagine how long it will take me to see the rest now this has happened LOL) this was definitely my worst stadium experience so far. And that includes the CTC (which gets a bit of a bum rap just for being so far out but they lay on event buses that drop you right in the lot! Decent compromise)

@@EricVigod The Prudential Center is a much better and superior location than playing in the swamp. There's absolutely nothing there outside of the Meadowlands. And a lot of people complained about the location. The Giants and Jets can thrive there because both football teams need the large space for tailgating, but the Nets and the Devils couldn't because it's not necessary for basketball and hockey teams to attract too many people (max 20k) and it was optimum to move to Newark and build an arena than building anything in the Meadowlands. Hockey and basketball thrives in urban markets, not in a swamp, ask the Panthers.

very sad, being that i live like 2 miles away from the Nassau coliseum, my dad and grandpa used to have great stories about hanging out with the 80s islanders at Major's (a local steakhouse) after games and it has so much history and nostalgia to so many people. also one of the few stadiums in a suburban area. There are houses literally a quarter mile away from the stadium. ha a real tight nit feel to it.

Just an FYI, that concourse inside was added when they "renovated" the Coliseum shortly after the Isles left it for Barclays. Before that, it wasn't there and there were more seats. After the Isles left, they decreased the seating capacity by a few thousand seats, and added that to try and alleviate the overcrowding in the main concourse.

CitiField was needed if the Mets needed to survive. The New Yankee Stadium is as superfluous as it comes. Yes it has the modern amenities, but tearing down the old Yankee Stadium was unnecessary, since older ballparks like Fenway Park, Wrigley Park, and even Dodger Stadium are still popular by fans and losing the old Yankee Stadium does detract from the team's charm.

A ton of history going down with that arena,late seventies,early eighties.Players on that dynasty were fantastic,including Billy Smith from Perth Ont.who defended his net at all cost.You will never see another...the mold was broken.That team was all stars and it took another team of stars to dethrone them.Those were good years if you were a fan of one or the other.

Great episode! There’s also an interesting fact that Mikhail Prohokhorov pulling out of Nassau after buying it in 2015. He was a majority owner of the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays before selling his stake in both those last summer. Sounds like an owner pulling his investments out of New York in a hurry!!! Sucks that the Islanders have to kind of suffer because of things out of their control. 😬

Where does this guy get his information from? The Nassau Coliseum was renovated a few years ago with no intention of having an NHL team play in the building. During the 2019-2020 season, the NHL gave the Islanders a waiver, if you will, to play a portion of their season at the Coliseum even though it didn't meet NHL requirements. And, since I live in New York, I have a lot of access to information, the NHL, apparently gave the Islanders a waiver to allow them to play the entire 2020-2021 season at the coliseum and them they would move into the Belmont arena for the 2021-2022 season. The Nassau Coliseum is a beautiful arena and will be used for it's intended purposes(Not for NHL Hockey(Except the 2021-2022 season)). Naturally, with COVID-19, no one knows when the coliseum will be able to function as intended but all the info this guy is giving is incolrrect!

I was sad when the Checkerdome was demolished. Understood it though. The building had become unsafe, and at some point a new building works better than endless repairs. Advice to Isles fans: Embrace the new building at Belmont, but always love your memories of Nassau. It is not either/or. Sort of like when you're at the reception of a beloved grandparents funeral, and someone hands you the new baby in the family to hold. You lovingly miss one as you take joy in the presence of the other.

I could see a situation where the minor professional teams like the Long Island Nets and if the Bridgeport Sound Tigers or Hartford Wolf Pack could move there. You could also copy Minneapolis, make Belmont the Hockey-specific arena and NYCB the basketball one, maybe enticing Hofstra Men's Basketball over along with the LI Nets.

Part of the problem with the Colosseum was that, it was great for fans in the surrounding areas by car, it was lousy so far as mass transit is concerned. There will be a station built next to both Belmont Park AND the new arena so that fans who don't want to use a car can get there.

The LIRR station nearby Belmont Park is a terminus, therefore it doesn't really go anywhere in LI. Plus as much as the new arena is supported, the location sucks. If the powers that be could be an Arena at Belmont, then why couldn't they do the same thing at Uniondale? It seems like the perfect place to build an arena, but the line only starts at Penn Station or Flatbush Ave, then Jamaica, and finally to Belmont Park. The LIRR won't serve fans, while the old Nassau Coliseum, while farther away from the Coliseum, at least provided coverage within LI. The point of the matter was that the Isles had a much better location in Uniondale than Belmont Park, as the LIRR won't serve LI residents and fans in Suffolk will have to commute a little longer to Belmont just to support the team. It's not the arena that's bad, it's the location. We'll see, but I'm not crazy about the new location.

Seems another lifetime to me that I was a "kid" in a Navy squadron which flew planes made in Bethpage sitting in the common room of the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters I was staying in watching a Stanley Cup Finals game from Nassau Coliseum (not realizing at the time how close those two are), as the Islanders had their hopes of a fifth consecutive title dashed by an unheralded team from the Canadian prairies. No doubt there were a lot of Grumman employees in the house than night. The plant in Bethpage and the old Republic Aviation plant in Farmingdale, a mile further east, are both gone now. It's time to let the Coliseum go as well, I think. If it can be used as an AHL venue, as some people are suggesting, then that's fine. Whatever life the building has left use it.

A new building is a lot like a rebrand. The team needs to be competitive and successful in the new building for fans to embrace it. The Islanders need to get to where they make the playoffs almost every year. They also have to win some playoff series when they get there. So a ten year stretch where the make the post season seven or eight times and reach the second round or better five or six times. A building will get to feeling like home pretty quickly that way.

Lifelong Islanders fan. Grew up minutes from the Coliseum. While the place was increasingly a dump compared to new arenas, it was an incredible place to watch hockey due to its sightlines and (when the team has been good) the energy in the barn. Honestly, that's what should matter, right? Modern amenities are great, but at the end of the day, I'm there to watch a sport and a team that I love, so I care most about the experience once I'm in my seat. In any case, I'm excited for Belmont. One advantage the Islanders have over other teams moving to new arenas is that Belmont is attached to one of the more famous venues in all of American sports, i.e. Belmont Park. The grounds are already oozing with history and personality, so I don't think the Islanders need to worry about that sterile new venue issue that other teams contend with. The key thing will just be putting a good product on the ice, which ownership seems intent on doing, and which Trotz and Lou bring stability around. Now let's just get Barzal signed!

I have not looked into it but this just came to mind. Why don't they just move the Bridgeport Soundtigers into the coliseum?? I'd love to go see a few games and get a better idea of how our prospects are actually doing. I know it wouldnt draw alot of people to it but it gets the AHL team closer to the big club and can have joint practices as well once the plague is over with. Im sure die hard fans would like to go to a few cheaper games a year especially if they live closer to the coliseum than to the new stadium in Bellmont.

What are the plans as to how Nassau Coliseum will be used in the future? The Islanders will move of course. I think the Long Island Nets of the G-League still reside there. Even then, they would need tenants and events that can generate revenue. Would concerts alone keep Nassau afloat?

No they spen 300+ million dollars to essentially do a paint job to the facility, while reducing capacity, it was never going to be profitable even if Belmont didnt happen, singers and other performers just had no reason to go there with MSG and Barclays there with better facilities, more seats and are in the City.

You are spot on with three of four. Ottawa would be a success with a new building in town and a sane owner. The latter is the heavier lift for now. The Islanders struggles in the last 30 plus years are a story in and of themselves. No matter what anyone says they are the third wheel in NYC area hockey due to their post-dynasty performance and having a fan base centered on Long Island, which has been stagnating since the 90s. Miami is more of a Caribbean and South American oriented city than an American transplant city. Their arena is off the highway outside of Fort Lauderdale. The area has become a sports vortex and hockey isn’t a blip on the screen. Arizona’s was that snowbirds would latch on to their new local team. Doesn’t help that the arena isn’t in Phoenix. Another lost cause. Quebec, Houston and the third either Kansas City or Hamilton.

@@SeanMoronski Ottawa is perfect for hockey and while the Canadian Tire Centre is a nice arena for hockey, even though it's technically in Ottawa, it's actually in Kanata. It's about 16 mi (25.4 km) from Downtown Ottawa, which is pretty far and if there's traffic, then commuting to a game can be hell and the same can be said for the Florida Panthers. The Panthers actually started out in Miami, but then owner Wayne Huizenga felt it was better to place the Panthers in Sunrise as opposed to sharing the new arena with the Heat. It would've been better had they built the current BB&T Arena in Ft Lauderdale, at least, but Huizenga felt that Sunrise, FL was a better site, and the Panthers have struggled because of the location. The best situation for the Panthers would either be moving the Panthers to Miami, that's the only way the Panthers are going to survive. Either that or the Panthers will move to Quebec or Hartford or somewhere in Canada. It's not that Miami isn't a bad market, but the team plays too far away from the population base and while Huizenga's foresight was on point at the time to centralize the team, the location is subpar to this day. He should've moved the Panthers to either Ft Lauderdale or share the arena with the Heat. Phoenix should most definitely move to Quebec, and with Seattle being the 32nd NHL team, I don't see much hope in further expansion. Only way for Quebec and Hartford to get an NHL team is to move the current NHL franchises out of their struggling markets.

I couldn’t agree with you anymore. I’m a ranger fan from Nassau, my house is five minutes down the road from the coliseum (no exaggeration). It is gonna absolutely suck when they leave this place, I used to park my car across the street to avoid $40 for parking and it was perfect. After this stadium closes (being that it is probably the only stadium left in this country to reside in a primarily residential area) those days of commuting to a game and parking on a side street are history. I went to both Ranger games there this year and I wish I could’ve paid more because of how unbelievable they were. The NHL will never see something like that again and it’s so sad to think about.

I grew up in the NY area. Other than ONE admittedly historic run, The Nassau County Mausoleum been a monument to failure. In 5-8 years, the new arena in Belmont will be another bankrupt shrine to irrelevance.

It's big news, but its ain't no Roman Colosseum, these buildings can't be historic attractions when they sit empty unless there is enough demand for events in the area to support two large stadiums

@@LeylaDerben about 2000 or so seats cant see the whole ice surface, a good portion of them literally cant see one entire zone. It was designed for basketball, and as such is just too small for a hockey rink

Nassau is a PITA to get to. They would have sold so many tickets to tourists who just want to try hockey and don't want to shell out $100/ticket for the Rangers (when I went it was $25 and it was only row 2 in the 200 level. I've had worse seats I've paid wayyyyy more for in other markets) if it was more accessible from Manhattan, 💯.

Never got a chance to go to the coliseum. Kind of a bummer. I’ve only been to the islanders at the Barclays center. Made the mistake of buying an obscured view seat once. Worst view I’ve ever seen for a sporting event. Islanders deserve better.

When the Lighthouse project was being offered, there was plenty of bitching from Isles fans about how rundown it was. Don’t get me wrong, the atmosphere is awesome, but the building’s day has long passed. I have great memories.

So, old video now I know. Turns out they got an operator for the barn. They didn't go back to Barclay's. Now make no mistake, still there is little chance with given outlook islander fans will ever attend an islander game at the barn again. Unlike the previous arrangement with Barclay's , the owners of SVG have no interest in sharing islanders home games. Likely the coliseum will be repurposed in the best case. But most likey will be torn down. Sad they just renovated. But too little too late after the isles left. UBS looks wonderful and I can't wait to attend a game. I will miss the barn thought. Never did get to visit post renovation. Even with the new rink I can't imagine the isles attendance issues will go away. Especially If they fall from grace. Will be an interesting first 5 years.

The new owners (Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin) have done virtually everything right since buying the Islanders. Before designing the new arena, they talked with a lot of the 80's dynasty guys. And they all agreed that these new buildings with their high ceilings just eat up the crowd noise. The buildings sound dead. - Belmont will be different. It is going to be built with a lower ceiling to keep the noise in. The idea is to keep the same Coliseum ambience when they move to Belmont. The new arena will have all the amenities of modern facilities, but without losing the energy. There's no hockey like Islanders' hockey when our fans get rocking. - Gov. Cuomo's office did put out a statement this week that more than hinted that if push comes to shove, NY State will get involved to help keep the Isles in Nassau. NO ONE.....not fans, not management, not ownership, not players.... want to go back to Barclays. I think they will play their games in the practice facility before they ever play in Brooklyn again.

I didn’t know they were gonna do that with the Belmont Arena that’s pretty cool and look forwards to visiting the stadium. On that Note the Islanders have no choice to go to Barclays the Russian billionaire just told everyone in Nassau FU despite the panademic people lost jobs and the stadium will close until new investors buy the debt. You know who’s gonna buy debt Private Equity guys and you know what they do they tear down more shit you don’t have.

@@Actionronnie sounds like the arenas in Hartford and Bridgeport where it's 40 hockey dates + some college games + a string of family shows ever year. Live Nation amphitheatres in Hartford + Wallingford + soon in Bridgeport get all the concerts. Mohegan $un gets all the indoor concerts. As of now the Hartford & Bridgeport arenas get like 2 concerts booked a year. The Coliseum would have to be subsidized (like the Hartford & Bridgeport arenas are) to operate for AHL, Hofstra, other colleges, family shows, and the occasional concert.

@@rwa2play folks in Long Island would rather watch major leauge hockey than minor leauge hockey. They're close enough the NHL's MSG & Belmont that AHL at the Coliseum would be an afterthought. Back when hockey fights + rivalries were still a thing in the AHL (early 2000's) every Wolf Pack @ Sound Tigers game would draw 6,000-8,000. Nowadays that matchup draws half that crowd figure. Minor leauge fans are bloodthirsty for old time hockey. If you want to watch skilled hockey players the AHL is nothing more than just an inferior leauge to the NHL.

Thats a shame, great building but I guess everything passes with time. As far as a team losing something moving into new digs, the flyers lost a lot of the 'Philly flu' when they moved out of the spectrum.

Barclays cant deny the islanders, they are still under contract with them to provide a place to play, playing the Nassau was fine because the operators of Nassau is the same as Barclays

They did the renovation in 2015 but not for NHL hockey. Than they had to put more money into it to get it NHL ready.

Governor Lamont actually welcomed the Islanders to the XL Center touted it's new ice surface and new dasher boards. Owner Ledecky had no comment. Lol

As an Isles fan I want them to play at MSG. It’s easier to get into the MSG then Barclays.
