Loved the update! The visa process is so finicky and annoying, so I admit I was kind of curious how you were still in Korea so long after being finished with your KU program haha. I also had a similar experience of having education plans go wonky and having to find another path, but thankfully I've also managed to get an amazing job in Korea despite those plans going awry, so I'm so happy for you that you've also managed to end up in a great workplace despite the bumps in the road. Hopefully we can both continue on these positive paths into the future 😊

Congratulations - it’s good to see you succeed! It’s very interesting what you said about the job and visa application process. Here in Germany we have a 6 month probation period, and I think it’s a good method for both sides to find out if it’s there right person or the right job/company. I hope you will have fun at work and love the job going forward.

This is why I always tell people to never let the negative comments or videos to deter them from moving to Korea. I teach in Seoul but live outside of Seoul and love my arrangement. Living outside of Seoul is cheaper and the people are nicer and getting to spend 14 hours a week at work and have tons of paid vacation time is more than I can ask for :)

As a GKS-G scholar (uni track, 2022), despite being this still very highly competitive scholarship, living off a milion won per month + having to pay the national insurance + accomodation (either dorms or living by yourself) is really hard, almost impossible. In case you wouldn't have any additional money saved, i wouldn't recommend applying to this anymore. And there's the fact you cant legally work during semester, thus rendering you completely depended on the little money you receive from NIIED. As other people said in your comments, you are where you are supposed to be, you seem to be very happy about your new job and who knows, maybe one day your path will lead you to the academia again. Good luck to you, and don't give up your dreams! ♥

As someone who is considering if it would be possible and/or desirable to work in Korea, I really hope you'll decide to make a video about how you applied for your job and the further process. No pressure though. You must be busy enough right now 😊 Oh and also, do you think it's harder for foreigners who are not native English speakers to get selected?

This is so great, congratulations! I remember the terror and excitement of starting a job in the language you've been learning (not comparable to Korean, but my first English-speaking job was a wild experience!). It's fascinating that in the UK there's a very similar probation period, I always thought it was pretty much the same everywhere in the world - but I guess it's not the same in the US? I think the work culture of a country might be overall toxic, but it doesn't mean there won't be specific cases where a series of conditions (and perhaps some well-deserved good luck?) will make it for a positive, enjoyable working experience 🥰 and I am very glad you're having a good time! 🎉

Hi Natalia! I'm 26F and have been considering doing a language school for 6 months in either Japan or South Korea, but got the impression that most people on these courses are 18-25 year olds. While I would be ok with 24-25 year olds, spending 6 months in a class with only people aged 18-20 (which could happen, especially if you're unlucky like me) would make me feel so awkward lmao. What was it like in your programme, I wonder? Because you're 27 so I'm guessing you were also maybe 26 when you did this? How much do you gauge you paid in total for 6 months and was it worth the money, do you think?

In addition to the pay not being that great, working conditions for ESL teachers in Korea aren’t very good. I’ve also taught English before in the USA and it just wasn’t for me. Also teaching here wouldn’t help me if I were to return to the USA unless I wanted to become a teacher, which I don’t

Hi Nat! Watching your video felt very cosmic. Similarly, for many years I also planned and structured my life with the intention to study a Master's in Korea via GKS. It was quite a shock when I didn't get the scholarship in 2019. I was SO tired and unmotivated after the process that I decided to bury the subject indefinitely for peace of mind. Funny enough, while I waited for the GKS results I got an internship at a really prestigious organisation and gave it a go to "kill some time". Fast forward four years later as manager for my sector in the region, I'm amazed and thankful for the amount of learning I've done. What initially helped me as a "lifeboat" to not dwell on the scholarship became a source of empowerment and inspiration for my future. I am now resuming my dream to go to Korea -perhaps as a language student, hence why your videos have helped me so much!- but with a fresh perspective and skillset. And this detour 👏did NOT👏 make me👏 a failure👏. Not getting the scholarship was a big blow, sure, but I now know it just wasn't in my best interest. As you said: perhaps you just skipped a step that _thought_ necessary and instead got to a much better somewhere else. I wish you all the best in this new endeavour, hope you learn as much as I did and more clarity comes to you in due time. I also have a question: while you waited during the working visa process, where you still on your student visa? Thank you so much ❤
