You know, it's not that complicated. Just because someone is a great player does not make them a great GM. She could have contributed to a toxic environment or was simply incompetent (as evidenced by the controversies during her tenure, such as the situation with Charlie Burggraf). I've met many unqualified directors and executives in my life-both male and female-who never should have been promoted to higher positions. Next time, hire someone with actual experience to manage the operations of a hockey team. This means considering all qualified candidates, regardless of gender. Stipulating that this person must be a former player from Minnesota restricts your talent pool and undermines merit-based hiring. You're focusing too much on her achievements as an athlete and Olympian, which do not necessarily qualify her for the GM role. Case in point, Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest players ever, struggled as a coach and was never a GM, whereas Ken Holland, an unremarkable player, had a highly successful career as a GM. Hiring based on gender or other non-essential criteria can lead to poor outcomes and damage the credibility of the league. Focus on merit and qualifications to ensure the best management for the team and the sport.
