So the explanation of how Sherlock did it, along with all the theories shown in the episode, were a meta commentary on the actual fandom. It took two years for this season to come out and theories were everywhere. So Anderson's response, "that's not how I'd have done it," and all his questions about why it wouldn't work were the fans speaking through him. Pretty solid gag.
@joanapereira8011 Жыл бұрын
I loved that they did this because it was so meta and so accurate haha we were all going a bit crazy trying to figure it out and no matter what they came up with some would always be disappointed or think it wasn't good enough etc so it was so clever of them to just put it into the show

The guy doing the hypnotism at 4:37 is Derren Brown. Derren is a British entertainer who uses the arts of mysticism, 'hypnotism', cold reading, etc., etc. in his shows. He likes to show how easily people can be manipulated by 'psychics', advertising companies, and so on. Do check out his stuff, it's really fun. The bonfire is for November 5th, Guy Fawkes night. (V for Vendetta is based on Guy Fawkes, not the other way around.) Guy Fawkes (Guido Fawkes) was a member of a Catholic group who tried to blow up the House of Lords in 1605. He was discovered sitting on a barrel of gunpowder, waiting for his conspirators to show up. Guy Fawkes night commemorates his capture, with fireworks and the "burning of the guy" - burning a dummy (usually made of straw stuffed into an old shirt and pants) on a bonfire.

Nat, it's a shame you missed one crucial line from Mycroft--the Eastern Europe assignment was a death sentence, within no more than six months. So when Sherlock is leaving, only he and Mycroft know he's never coming back. You were supposed to hear all the goodbye speeches with that in mind, so you could appreciate the difference between what Sherlock is saying, and what John is hearing....
@nickcollins5191 Жыл бұрын
I THOUGHT there was a line about this in this episode. Also, when Natalie said “I knew they were wearing the same belt” (meaning the Major in the first episode) and the other guy who got stabbed as a ‘rehearsal’ anyone who hasn’t watched the show before would be SUPER confused. I love nats reactions but I do feel her usual reaction videos of three to four episodes of a 20 minute show in one video don’t really work for Sherlock which is 90 minutes an episode. I find comments like this baffling. You could not pay me to watch this garbage again. Literally one of the most infuratingly stupid, garbage shows I have ever watched. I do not understand how anyone can like this sizzling pile of hot dogshit. And then to enjoy rewatching it? Why? So the obvious plot holes, the vapid writing, the complete failure to understand the character, and the utter lack of any mystery or deduction becomes even more obvious? This series has zero rewatchability and I generally recommend people not start with it at all, because it goes from a mediocre first season to absolutely unwatchable dogshit by the third season, and then the fourth season is basically just the show runners shoving a handful of shit into your face and laughing at how stupid they think you are.

Eeeeeeee! So excited to watch this. You gotta imagine it's been 2 SOLID years of endless speculation and theorising about the new episodes...shipping of every character you could possibly imagine...the fanfic..the fanart...we knew how the original stories handled Sherlock coming back so we had ideas, we'd seen them filming a wedding..we knew Amanda Abbington had been cast as Mary (she was Martin Freeman's real life partner at the time they were together for ages and have 2 kids, but they broke up), they couldn't film in some locations without heaps of people there watching (especially where they filmed Baker Street) half the cast and crew were active on twitter during that time, i still follow the set designer he's great 🤣, we got teased the names of the episodes like some crazy puzzle (all episodes are the same as/slight changes to original stories e.g The Empty House became The Empty Hearse) it was a LOT and absolute insanity clearly could not go unnoticed to the point of it influencing the opening of the show but it was brilliant! 🤣

So much of this still gets to my heart in a beautifully painful way. The scene where Sherlock is shot and then sees Moriarty and claws back is just..gosh..brilliant. It's all so much. Sherlock cares so much about John though is still an ass when you don't want him to be then he's lonely and still very much cares about John. John cares about Sherlock but is balancing his relationships and his own issues and then "because you chose her" when things are revealed about Mary...Sherlock caring about them both enough to be far too nice about the whole situation. I just want them to have nice things. Also let's not forgot "we killed Moriarty and Andrew Scott was so brilliant how can we bring him back in small ways😂😂" which yknow.....is fair....he is brilliant.

If you haven’t seen it, you should check out the pairing of Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as ‘Holmes and Watson’ in the 2012 - 2019 Series: ‘Elementary’. Set in New York, Holmes, is of course, intuitively brilliant, but flawed, as a recovering drug addict and other vices. We find him, as a Crime Consultant, assisting the NYPD. Dr. Watson (Liu) ultimately enters his orbit. In my humble opinion, ‘Elementary’ far exceeded the BBC offering that you currently enjoy.

I honestly believe the real reason the show runners never told us how Sherlock actually survived is because they couldn’t think of one that would satisfy audiences. It’s like with Lost, how the show runners never planned that far ahead so they used the “mystery box” writing technique, which is just lazy storytelling.
@channyh.221B Жыл бұрын
Well, they never planned the solution for the first cliffhanger (Moriarty in the swimmingpool with the bomb) and still they managed to get away with it. Ofcourse with a big thankyou to Moffat's wife who came up with the idea of the loud ringtone to distract everyone. No shame in there. And I like to believe Anderson the only one who knows what really happened. Also, we get a lot of adventures, mysteries, puzzles, twists, humor, angst, drama poured in only 13 episodes in total, and almost everyone (well, not you ofcourse) loves it, and you call that lazy storytelling? Point me to another series with only so few episodes where you get all of this high quality and so much loved by so many people and I'll will congratulate you on the find.
@mmattson8947 Жыл бұрын
I think it has to do with one of Sherlock's catch-phrases. "Once you've eliminated the impossible, whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth." In this case, there were many ways Sherlock could have survived. What was important was it could be done. It didn't matter which one in particular, because there are multiple solutions that could not be eliminated as impossible. So leaving it vague, so the viewer can choose the more fanatical or the more mundane solution, was the right solution for me. Especially since the episode was focused on the relationship of the leads, not the mechanics of the magic trick.

@@channyh.221B the majority of Sherlock fans agree that the show fell of in terms of quality after season 2. You want proof? I really love how they did the scene when Sherlock got shot by Mary. How he uses he uses his mind palace to save himself but more than that, he is using his personification of all the people he loves and cares about (and Moriarty) to tell him what to do which gives a really nice insight into how he has changed over the course of the series and that he is capable of human connection. It's also a great way to get Andrew Scott back to be Moriarty even after his suicide, well that is until the very end of the episode! You'll have to see what comes of that. (Very happy to see other comments saying you did react to the Abominable Bride because it is 100% part of the main plot of the show even though it is a special (I'd call it S3 E4 personally).

It just occurred to me a year or so ago that John was a bad doctor. That's why in this extreme moment in Sherlock's life, when he's looking for medical people to help him, John doesn't appear. He sees Molly and Anderson with some comment from his brother. Strange since John was a 'field medic'. The last seasons have shown John just isn't that good of a doctor. No wonder Sherlock's consciousness turns elsewhere.

November 5th is Guy Fawkes day in England. Where they “stopped” him from blowing up Parliament. It predates V for Vendetta by several centuries.

I would love to see you react to the earlier series starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes-- which for the most part adapted the original stories almost word-for-word. Even if you don't do the whole series (it did go downhill near the end when Brett's health was failing and they'd already done the better stories) and went with just a few select episodes instead, I think you'd enjoy drawing the comparison to the Sherlock version.

A little information: On at least two occasions, this season is relying on information from William S. Baring-Gould's 1962 fictional "biography" of Holmes, Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street. It was Baring-Gould who invented the idea that Watson's middle initial "H" stood for Hamish, to account for the one time in the original series that his wife addresses him as "James" rather than "John"'; Hamish is the Scottish form of James, so Mrs. Watson would simply have been calling her husband by the anglicized version of his middle name. And Baring-Gould came up with Holmes' full name being William Sherlock Scott Holmes because, in The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, Holmes uses the alias William Escott (William S. Scott). Incidentally, Baring-Gould assigned January 6 as Holmes' birthday, because, at least in some traditions, January 6 is Twelfth Night, and the only literary work that Holmes quotes twice in the original stories is Twelfth Night, so Baring-Gould reasoned that the title of that play must have had a special significance for him. One wonders what Holmes would have thought of such reasoning.

Before you start season 4 btw you MUST watch The Abominabl Bride!! It was a stand-alone episode that air in between the seasons (let's not forget it was 3 years between them) and not only it's fantastic but it is part of the story! Don't skip!

The wedding episode might be my favorite too, but the scene where Watson is talking to/about Sherlock's new girlfriend is some of the funniest acting I've ever seen. It gets me every damn time.

Have you read up yet that 5 November is not V for Vendetta day in the Uk. It’s Guy Fawkes night / fireworks night / bonfire night.

10:50 Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot, I know of no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot. People are burning a Guy Fawkes Strawman every November 5th. To quote from Wikipedia: Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain, involving bonfires and fireworks displays.

I was at the first screening of the first episode of series 3 at the bfi in London. Cast and creative were all there and they did a Q&A after but the reacting to the begging sequence was INSANE!! People were screaming. Considering we had a wait 2 years I think for the series. Fan Theories were through the roof. There was even a phone booth near Bart’s hospital (where it was filmed) and people left RIP note etc.

Outside of a few episodes of Supernatural and Monk, The Sign of Three is one of the most delightfully funny television episodes that consistently makes me crack up no matter how many times I see it.

I might have mentioned this in the previous Sherlock reaction, but it needs to be stated that each episode is based on a story being told by Watson, months or years after the fact. When we see words and illustrations on the screen when Sherlock is figuring things out, that's how Watson imagines it and tells it, not what Sherlock actually sees. With very few exceptions, Sherlock Holmes stories are told from Watson's perspective with his (or her, if you're in New York) ideas about how things work.
