The mid to late 2000s gave audiences 3 distinct versions of Holmes and Watson story with Sherlock's Cumberbatch and Freeman, Sherlock Holmes' Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, and Elementary's Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. These 3 tellings of Sherlock Holmes are so different from one another that I was able to thoroughly enjoy each one as a separate medium without having to play the game of "choosing the best version or why this one is good and this one isn't."

The stories tend to be retelling of the originals, like this was originally A Study in Scarlet. The gag with Anderson and Rache being German for revenge was a nod to the original solution. This show was created and written by Mark Gatiss (who also plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft) and Steven Moffat. Moffat is known for creating other shows in the UK over the years but is probably best known for being the showrunner of Doctor Who throughout Matt Smith's and Peter Capaldi's tenures as The Doctor. Moffat also wrote some of the more memorable Doctor Who episodes during Chris Eccleston's and David Tennant's tenures. In fact, at one point he was running both Doctor Who and Sherlock at the same time! Many of the Sherlock episodes also give Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writing credit as well, because many of the episodes are adaptations loosely based on his original stories, but with changes and plot twists made so that those familiar with the originals (like myself, I read them all as a kid) can experience a completely new version of them. By doing this Gatiss and Moffat were able to make a popular modernization of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson that succeeded where many other attempts at similar "updating" of the classic characters have failed. BTW, if you find you like Sherlock well enough, I highly recommend the BBC Sherlock Holmes series of the 1980's and early 90's starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes. They are very faithful adaptations of the original stories and Conan Doyle's family endorsed Jeremy Brett as the quintessential Holmes.

Many felt Moffat's welcome was overstayed on Doctor Who, but regardless of how he is as a showrunner, it has to be emphasised that he wrote some of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever, Blink, Silence in the Library, Beast Below, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances - all very recommended! Also those Sherlock Holmes shows were made by ITV, a different (private/commercial) British broadcaster

@@SonicMegaKing the deductions and adaptations they made to transfer Sherlock's character to a new era. The explanation to his deductions are pretty believable, especially in a first time watching it and his character is very captivating. Based on your stand out type of comment I'm guessing you're one of the people who doesn't like the show and overanalyze everything. If that really is the case, that will ruin your enjoyment of every single thing you watch, as it would ruin it with this show in particular. Nothing is perfect and every story can be stupid or inconsistent at times.

@@mareiramvmany people didn't like the show, I watched it with an open mind and still give it a 7 out of 10, bringing an old character into a current era is just as difficult as the opposite, even with good writing, this is evident by the MULTIPLE plotholes or side storylines being abruptly ended in later seasons due to the CONVENIENT existence of the internet and technology, leading to the series being stopped/cancelled for continuation. You can LITERALLY find anyone's address or phone number or their name from the internet RIGHT NOW if you have the skills, so this should've been a "hacker" series instead of "detective" series, then people will watch it with a different expectations and remain satisfied without offending BOTH haters and fans
@mareiramv
@mareiramv 11 ай бұрын
@@ramteja1550 the existence of the internet didn't cancelled the show. In fact, a lot was being debated about the making of season 5. Moffat even said that if the actors agree with the idea they could do it, which means the BBC could go on with this particular version of the character. Have you looking for people's adress or phone number in the internet lately? Could you give me Hailee Steinfeld number? I'm asking for a friend. No, but being serious now. No jokes... Adresses could totally be a problem, despite the internet, because the big bad of the show is Moriarty, someone who controls crime and escapes justice despite a lot of very important people (Mycroft) being against him. Hidding an adress wouldn't be a problem if that was the case, but good thing the series isn't about finding adresses, but the contained mystery of this one super smart detective. Plot holes and little conviniences can happen anywhere, as long as they don't ruin the fun with the show, it's all good. Nat seems very invested in the characters and story so far, I had a good time watching it and a lot of people did too. In a first watch, you can buy what they are selling, but if you overanalyze things, you will never have fun. Also, can you give an exemple of sidestory they INTERRUPTED? Because everyone had their ending by the end of season 4.

@@mareiramvbut that's not the truth. In the beginning most of his deductions do work, we see how he arrives at some of the conclusions, but some of them are already... questionable. It's amazing how so much of the original stories written over a century ago translated into our time. Dr. Watson did serve in Afghanistan. Keep watching and reviewing, Nat. We're here watching with you!
@TarisSinclair

"A Study In Scarlet". But yes, the makers drew more than a few parallels and made a lot of respectful bows to the original books. Watson's Afghan service was one - the fact that there were two wars in Afghanistan, one at the time of the original characters, and one at the time of the show is just a breathtaking coincidence and opportunity for that reference. As for Moriarty, I think the description everyone's looking for is "playful". That's the best way I can describe his sing-song "No you won't" quip. Andrew Scott made Prof. Moriarty quite playful, contrary to the original character of very serious, distinguished, extremely strict Victorian gentleman.
@thatfilmydesaikid
@thatfilmydesaikid 11 ай бұрын
@@TarisSinclair [w.r.t. what you said about Scott's Moriarty] I think it was something of a masterstroke to write him that way coz, if I'm not wrong, the OC (original character) was a Mathematician by profession who had a thing for crime. And he too had a tendency to lose his mind if his machinations didn't go as planned. Scott's version doesn't have the former; he's simply a criminal mastermi--- I mean _consulting_ criminal mastermind who seems to derive immense pleasure from seeing horrific events unfold that were orchestrated by him in some way or the other, and while he does show the same tendency when he sees that he could lose, Scott's way of portraying it seemed to be exasperation more/rather than rage, or a mix but tilted in a 55/45 ratio (that was my takeaway from the rooftop subplot in the finale of S2). All of that to say, this interpretation, IMO, was a decent way, if not as brilliant, to show a contemporary audience that this is what Holmes could be if pushed just enough. His 'coworkers' always seemed to expect him to tilt to the other way, but to see it actually happen would no doubt be hell, unless they pulled some absolutely simple trick that would frustrate him to no end coz it'd be so dull/boring. 😂

This show had a chokehold in fandom spaces for years lmao. If you're looking for a fun follow-up after Sherlock, I HIGHLY recommend Good Omens. It stars Michael Sheen (Aro from Twilight) and David Tennant (Killgrave from Jessica Jones) as an angel and a demon respectively, trying to thwart the impending apocalypse. It's based on a novel by Neil Gaiman (author of the Coraline book) and Terry Prachett, and it's super fun religious satire, and it's funny and cleverly written and whimsical, and the chemistry between the two leads is STELLAR (they've since become really good friends irl). And season 2 just dropped, and GIRLIE. Talk about a chokehold on its fandom, that s2 finale was INTENSE. I really think you'd love it. 💕

Also in 2004 he was still a young nubbin with only a handful of random TV appearances under his belt so Hawking was his first big project where he played the title role and had top billing, it would be another decade before he would become a household name after small parts in films like Atonement and The Other Boleyn Girl, but back in 2004 as a 20 year old Stephen Hawking you could clearly see how talented he was.

Andrew Scott (Moriarty) is an amazing actor. Not to throw you out of the character-image while watching this, but after you may want to at minimum see on YT his playing Hamlet and, while the entirety is available of the play, watching just the clip of his performing the "To be..." soliloquy or an wonderful one-man, one-camera short (34 minutes) film you can find under the name Sea Wall Film starring Andrew Scott - Full Film. His choices in how he presents Moriarty during Sherlock are so fun and unhinged lol.

This show was my first introduction to Cumberbatch, way before the MCU became a thing. It's also the best version of Sherlock Holmes imho. Which is funny, cause RDJ (Iron Man) also played a classic version of SH in a couple of movies. Glad you're getting introduced to the character and his merry gang - Watson, Moriarty, The Woman, Mrs Hudson, Lestrade... You're in for a fun ride 😊

Sherlock Holmes is a classic character and Professor Moriarty is his main nemesis in the books, this series brought the characters into the modern age. Few fun things to know: 1. Marvel always points to the address of doctor strange, since they give a very similar vibe. 2. There are two sherlock movies also which is played by RDJ, and both benedict and RDJ portrayed them equally well, thus fans were also very excited to see two sherlock in one frame in the mcu. 3. I'm also waiting for the moment of doctor strange meet agent ross(martin freeman) in mcu

It definitely wasn't as good as the first two, and in hindsight really signalled the beginning of the end for the show, but the second episode was really charming and I think the third ep was so good that it brought it back around somewhat. I would definitely love the day that you do Doctor Who, or give it a chance. Sherlock was created and written by Steven Moffat, who was also head writer and showrunner of Doctor Who at the time, so the two share a connection. In terms of a long show to get into, you’ve done it before with GoT, you could totally do it with Who. Perhaps start with Eccleston and the revived series 1.
