Normally I find the "protagonist hurting their friend to save them" trope intolerable, but this movie managed to threat the needle a bit, because it doesn't portray it as a noble thing Ralph's doing. He's been manipulated into believing it's the only option, but the framing makes it very clear that Ralph is hating every second of it, that he feels utterly wretched as he becomes the very thing he's been trying to prove he isn't all movie.

Wreck it Ralph has probably the best twist villain of that era of Disney, but it's also amazingly foreshadowed. Firstly, King Candy's very design contrasts highly with the rest of the Sugar Rush game looking like a Disney/western animated character as opposed to Sugar Rush's Japanese anime aesthetic, making him immediately feel out of place. His name also set him apart: every other racer is a pun on a candy or dessert; except for him. Secondly, Vanellope's name, it fits the pun naming scheme for racers but also includes "von Swepts" and is the only character to include the "von", which is significant when you remember that "von" is a Germanic term indicating nobility, foreshadowing her being a Princess. Then, of course, there's the voice of Turbo in the flashback if you pay attention it's clearly the same voice actor as King Candy, but on initial viewing you often miss it or write it off as them just reusing a voice actor for a quick take. Thus when the twist happens it CAN surprise you, but you don't feel betrayed because it fits with everything you've seen up to that point, and on repeat viewing you can then see all that clever foreshadowing.

I also like how they introduce Turbo very gradually, first mentioning "going Turbo" without clear context, and even having King Candy use the term to shake off any later suspicion, and finally explaining the term without lingering on the explanation for too long. Basically, they gave Turbo importance without making you think of him too much beyond just a cautionary tale, building the lore without making you focus on it. That way, when the reveal occurred, it blindsides you but still makes perfect sense and doesn't feel shoehorned.

Ralph is the perfect example of how a villain is only as good as their hero, because without Ralph there is no game. And Felix is the perfect example of how privilege can constitute towards arrogance, his popularity due to him being a good guy made his awareness of how important Ralph was very cloudy at times. Which further explains why Ralph wanted to win at something so badly, he just wanted to be seen, loved, and recognized just as much as Felix was.

I feel like this kind of goes back to the phrase "Villains aren't born, they are made", in that Ralph isn't a bad person, he has just been hurt by his circumstances. It also ties into something I've decided, which is that not all antagonists are evil. Evil is when someone likes hurting others. Below that is what I would probably call "Lost" or "Broken", where someone is just a normal (or possibly even a fundamentally good) person, not really evil at all, but have been so injured by life that they have lost the ability to care. I think Ralph is a good example of this because he isn't evil, he just has been hurt by life and unable to move past it. Once that changed and he could move beyond his pain, he actually was a good person. Yes, he continued to fill the role of villain in the game, but that was a job and he was actually a good guy underneath. Another good example is Wanda from the MCU. I feel like she sort of personified "the ends justify the means". Everyone has goals they want to accomplish, and everyone has lines they are not willing to cross to accomplish them, Wanda just had those red-lines moved because of how badly she had been hurt. If she could have moved beyond that pain I think she would have been a good person. But I am also a sucker for a redemption story.

The interesting thing about Wreck It Ralph is that it was such a big success, Disney always put promotional material out for their next films advertising that some of the same creatives were involved in it. The next thing? Frozen. After that? Zootopia. Generally, the main person who was involved in those things creatively was Jennifer Lee. They had a huge run of great animated films, but it really started with Ralph.

All of them were really good. One thing that someone pointed out as a reason that Jene is such an ass to Ralph. At the start of each game, Ralph punches into Jene's room, pulls him out and throws him offscreen. While Ralph has been the bad guy for 30 years, Jene has been manhandled and chucked around by Ralph every time someone plays that game. He has a reason to dislike him. Not saying it is justified, but there is a reason.

I love how the end credits takes us through the evolution of videogame technology. The Fix-It Felix song was made by "Buckner & Garcia" the team who made "Pac-Man Fever" back in the 80's. Alan Tudyk was doing a spot-on impersonation of Ed Wynn. He was the Mad Hatter in the original Alice in Wonderland.. He was also in Mary Poppins as the laughing guy.

Alan’s King Candy voice and look was done well because it was basically a callback to a Disney actor: Ed Wynn. He was the voice of the Mad Hatter and Uncle Albert on Mary Poppins. It was great having a voice actor who honored his sense of voice.

This was one my favorite "very pleasantly surprised" films I had seen. The hook of the cameos of all the famous video game characters got me in the theater, and I stayed for the great ride the film had to offer! I loved the action pieces, the little mystery set to the rules this world has, and the best part of the film was the phenomenal voice cast putting in amazing performances. I had always found Sarah Silverman somewhat annoying, but this film completely changed my opinion of her talents. I've seen this film dozens of times and the cart crushing scene gets me every damn time, even during this reaction!

I read an interview where she admitted that she borrowed a leaf out of Andy Kaufman's playbook - every time she does TV interviews or stand-up where she's supposed to be "herself" she does a character instead. One of her favorite characters is the really foulmouthed, weirdly bigoted upper class person who is just clueless about their annoying-ness. So she's actually pretty versatile, because almost every time we see her it's a character, not her.

In Mexico several decades ago there was a comedy show that included a character called La CHilindrina. A good girl deep down but really very naughty and restless, orphaned of a mother. I grew up in the 70's & 80's, so I was raised on old school Disney animated classics, the ones that won awards, and any good animated film should appeal to adults as well as children. Of course you have animated films specifically for adults, as well as the ones mainly for kids, but the market most want to reach is both at the same time. Movies like Wreck it Ralph are now classics because they reach both very well, but for every movie like this one, there are 5 more that are probably exactly as you would expect them to be. So just keeping getting recommendations from your people, and you'll see some of the best films ever made, animated or not. But try to steer clear of those straight to DVD type films as those things will make you question the meaning of life, and not in a good way. LOL

This movie was absolutely a case of "come for the references, stay for the great characters and heartfelt story" for me. I went into it with my friends and just expected to get a chuckle out of the video game cameos and not much else, and it ended up being the first movie I personally chose to see multiple times in theaters. It's just wonderful, full stop.

I think no matter what animated film it is, it's important for the adult characters to act like adults, and the kid characters act like kids. And this film accomplishes just that.

Fun facts: - The "surprise villain" trope originated from this movie, and Frozen 1 was written by the same creative team as Wreck-It Ralph. Which is why Frozen 1 also had a surprise villain. - "Fix-It Felix Jr." is inspired by the original Donkey Kong game. Felix is Mario, and Ralph is Donkey Kong. And, if you listen closely when Felix enters Hero's Duty, his jump SFX are the same as Mario's from the original NES games. - King Candy was voiced by Alan Tudyk, who starred in the Firefly TV series. After Wreck-It Ralph, he also had minor roles in Frozen 1 and Zootopia. - This movie was produced and released shortly after Disney acquired Lucasfilms, so there was a Star Wars reference in this movie.

As someone who is 31 and has been an avid movie animation watcher, its nice that you are trying out this medium. They are well written and the messages are wholesome. Old school Disney Pixar has been dominate for years but DreamWorks has been bringing out very comparable movies.

This movie shows a dynamic thats kinda rare in movies imo (unless im forgetting major ones). Idk how to describe it cuz its obvs not a romantic dynamic, its not siblings, its 2 people of similar personalities and similar motives but very different ways of going about it. Idk😂

A fun little detail most people miss is that when king candy locked up the memories. The tag said racers memories. That would include his own memories if he was really part of the game he wouldn't know ralph or about vanellope.

I loved the foreshadowing of this film. Especially for those who know the basics of programming and Speedrun hardware exploits. Vanellope was on the side of the game during the opening time warp. Salmon has an orange undertone to it. That castle was pink. The Konami Code was a big giveaway. That is for retro consoles. The code, for intended code, was simple: input -> command/storage -> output. But since emulation requires 10x more space and power, King Candy aka Turbo’s data was huge and needed emulation/adaptation code so he wouldn’t bug out like his first game jump. King Candy replaced Vanellope. Finally, all games have careful code to reload all active environments and static models. It’s usually an event trigger, like walking through a door. If Vanellope must not cross the finish line, then that very action is the reset command.

I really like how we get from how villains line goes from uncomfortable and funny in the beginning in the movie, and how you actually understand it’s meaning of that you shouldn’t try to be someone you are not and appreciate yourself. Its really good at catching you off-guard by the fact that you neglected its meaning the first time as well as Ralph did.

Anyone hating on the sequel are stupid. Sure it’s not nearly as good as the first but it’s still decent. Also, anyone criticising the direction they took with Ralph as a character need to think harder. He was alone for so long, viewed as a villain by people. The first person to see him as a friend is Vanellope. He is obviously going to be attached and believe she is why he is no longer a villain. In the second movie, they explore how getting overly attached to a person can do to your relationships. He was getting in the way of Vanellope’s dreams. I think it has a good message and it makes sense. He had become to dependent on her and needed to learn to let go of it. Which he did in the end, he learned that even if they weren’t together all the time, they’d still be best friends.

The only thing I had mixed feelings about, was the fact that the sequel changed the nature of Ralph and Vanellope's relationship from "friends" to "parent and child". I also have no idea where Ralph's "insecurity" came from.
