It hits the feels even more when you consider that Gordon cared that much unlike so many other cops in Gotham, that he could remember something as little as comforting Bruce as a child all those years ago. When Batman Begins came out, everyone praised it for being a dark and gritty/realistic Batman, and the tone persisted through the trilogy. But let's never forget Christopher Nolan is the director who gave Batman's story a Happy ending. That will always be my favorite part.

But he didn't get a happy ending.... He literally died in that nuclear blast. He was imagining it- just like he said he did when Bruce initially left.
@ArnhemPictures

@@emperormouse5487 I’ve never heard anyone think it was a dream, why would Nolan setup the ending, including Fox finding out the auto-pilot had been fixed if he wanted audiences to think Batman had died? It doesn’t make any sense. To your question, the movie ends, Alfred could have easily gotten up and joined them at their table after the camera stopped rolling. Showing up, unannounced after everyone thinks you’re dead to wink at Alfred is exactly the kind of thing this Bruce Wayne would do, his love of theatrics and drama is well established in the trilogy. It ends with a happy ending. But if you choose to believe he died, I guess more power to you. lol

I always thought he had died, when someone made me realise he genuinely survived it really changed my opinion of the film, and not for the better. They establish in the first film how famous Bruce Wayne is, he gets tracked down in prison in Korea, so to suggest he somehow retires into anonymity in Italy is ridiculous and destroys part of the ‘realistic’ base the trilogy was trying to create.
@ArnhemPictures
@ArnhemPictures 9 ай бұрын
In the first film he's young and presumably Alfred has him on missing person's lists and people are LOOKING for him, even then he was missing for years. In the last film he's publically a recluse and publically DEAD, they hold a funeral for him, presumably his obituary is in the news papers, why would anyone be looking for him in Italy or anywhere for that matter. People fake their own deaths for insurance money in real life, why would it not be "realistic" for Bruce to send off Batman in a blaze of glory and go retire with a lady in Italy. Like I said in a previous comment. Faking his own death just to wink at Alfred in Italy is EXACTLY the kind of thing this Bruce would do. @@ScienceAndReasonLover

Also to be fair... the first half of the script doesn't ask much of Bale's performance. They all act like "Batman needs to come back, then all will be fine" and Bruce Wayne is partially like "Damn you all and my ailments, I'm returning". Everything moves as many would expect: Batman will reappear, will kick Bane's butt, deliver some witty replies in low raspy voice and everybody will be fine and happy dancing the BatiTwist... Until Bane breaks his back XD. For the audience not familiar with Batman's general storylines (and those maybe bothered going for the "oh yeah, predictable" feeling) this would have been a big shock boosting some interest for the second part of the fim (where Christian Bale actually starts to act better... in the sense that his emotions return XD). I don't say that it was carefully planned (it could still be a mistake, in the sense that Nolan knew what he wanted and he didn't ask more emotional performances from his cast in the first half of the film in order to save time), but as far as many Batman comics go, it's an element that's been used before: "Oh, yeah; it's the goddam Batman; he has everything under control, nothing new to see... Jesus H. Christ; the dude is really hurt!". When Nat said she was not getting anything from Bale, I just though "wait for it" XD.

Out of the trilogy, this is my personal favorite. I adore the scene where Bruce finally climbs out of the pit. His father pulled him out of the well as a boy, but Bruce has to pull himself out of the pit as a man. This whole time, he has welcomed dying as Batman, but learning to fear death gives new life to his mission to save Gotham. I believe the bats aren't really there, but they're symbolic of his deepest fear. He has relearned the fear of death, and gives him the strength to keep living. He returns to Gotham to become the Bat one last time, but for Bruce Wayne to live, Batman must die. He and Selena can use the Clean Slate Protocol to start their new life together, and Bruce can rest easy knowing Gotham still has a protector in Blake as the new Batman. It's the only way Batman can ever have a happy ending, and I love it.

22:57 There's an older fan theory that they didn't show what Bane looked like cuz they wanted to suggest that he was beaten so badly that he doesn't have a bottom jaw. So the mask kinda fused into his face. I think Nolan likes to keep things a mystery like the Joker's past in the Dark Knight cuz he likes people to come up with their own conclusions. Yes, they are better when watched as a series in order, but they can be watched as standalone films. They have full resolution to their story. Neither of the first two films needed sequels to resolve dramatic cliffhangers. They left opportunity to make sequels, but that is extremely normal for all pop cinema today. Yeah, traditionally with DC heroes. Especially with Batman and Superman, there's a duality going on. Unlike Marvel where the superhero is like an extension of their character, someone like Superman is almost an entirely different person from Clark Kent. Like the guy gets so much into his character and method acting, that the secret identity is almost like a different person. Of course, the more prominent interpretation of Batman is that Bruce Wayne died in that alley. But still he puts an act.

That last shot with Bruce nodding at Alfred is so, so epic and emotional. The most emotional thing about it is something they didn't draw attention to, but had also been setting up throughout the movie. There, at the end, in the cafe on the banks of the Arno, as Alfred sits down with his Fernet-Branca. As Selina turns her head and moves her hair away from her neckline... she's wearing Martha Wayne's pearls. ... ... ... I wonder if Bruce told her there was a tracker in them.

Two great examples of young Michael Caine are the original "Get Carter" and the original "Italian Job" (where the main heist actually IS in Italy). Be warned, Get Carter is brutal. The Italian Job is loaded with British humour. Watched it at the cinema for the 40th anniversary, and at a particular point everyone shouted "You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"

At first Michael Caine was reluctant to be Alfred because he thought all he would be is a background piece to fulfil the butler role, but Chris Nolan came to give him the script and told him how Alfred would be a father figure and play a smaller but vital role in the movie. Caine read the script and agreed to do Batman Begins.

@@imajhawk6146 I think he might have felt boxed in. Traditionally, Batman's usually been almost a secondary character in his own story. The villains are more flashy and interesting and here's Bruce over here, trying hard not to be noticed, and kinda broody. And when he gets the camera, his character isn't able to do a lot except stoically get out of the pit because he has a city to save before they run out of movie.

11:18 - one of my most favourite Michael Caine scenes! The way his voice breaks is heartbreaking because he knows that what he's saying will most likely destroy his relationship with Bruce but he's willing to do so if it means he could potentially save his life! 😢❤❤ And 12:26 - such a small gesture but just placing a hand on his shoulder shows how absolutely DOMINANT HE IS OVER DAGGET! He didn't punch or kick him around...he just showed him how easily he could kill him and indeed he did! And 13:54 - people say this fight scene is shit...THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE! It shows how out of shape Bruce is and how much he's underestimated Bane...

In the Arrowverse, the League of Shadows is expounded upon in a bit more detail. They're a secret society whose purpose is to create conflict and chaos in the world to push humanity toward progress while simultaneously cutting away the weak and unworthy. It's a very interesting philosophical question that their organization embodies, sort of a secret society version of the Trolley Problem.
