I grew up on these old hymns when they were played and sung right, as with Natalie. I am also a jazz and blues cat. These hymns were the model for them.

And of course you make them sound so beautiful!! Thank you for taking the time to do this. It’s more appreciated than you know. God Bless

That "saloon" style reminds me of my happy church days in Louisiana. I was told that the church was the one that actually inspired the saloon music.

It's good to hear you playing through them in order like this - I'm following with the book in front of me, because a lot of them I don't know and it isn't always easy to work out where the tune goes (or what the proper speed is) purely by sight reading.

I probably have 40 hymnals in my collection.......everything from formal Episcopalian and Lutheran to gospel hymns......and I'm pretty familiar with most of it..........but I have never heard most of these "redback" hymns.........it's a whole kind of hymns I've never heard. They're certainly not somber or slow!
@tjlarson98594 жыл бұрын
"Redback" is fairly easy to find Used-Good Condition on Amazon. The one I ordered was something like $7 + $4 SnH. It's the largest single collection of this type of "gospel" song that I've found. My paperback Stamps-Baxter books from the 50s and 60s are long gone.
@palref4 жыл бұрын
@@tjlarson9859 Yes, I bought one a while back (but in green). Can' t remember if I got it on Amazon or AbeBooks or Alibris, but it's not hard to find. I've been in hundreds of churches in the Midwest, but never run across one that uses it. The stylings are unique--and not easy to play!
@tjlarson98594 жыл бұрын
@@palref A lot of my collection didn't come with me to Philippines as a retired expat - but I have a fair selection from 50s to 90s of anything from "mainline medium-high church" to a 1957 Assembly of God hymnal, plus a few "collections of 100," etc. One which I was able to replace a couple years ago is "Hymns for the Family of God", 1976, Paragon, with Bill and Gloria on the editorial committee. It has some things in it which literally are NOT in any other book that I've found. Get it if you can. I also need to ask Natalie who published her "100 John W. Peterson" book that someone sent her, and see if I can find one of those. (but his harmonies are sometimes beyond my playing - - -)

palref, This hymn book was used a lot in the South. I grew up on it! It has died out in a lot of churches now, but it is still used a lot around the Atlanta area.
I'm not sure if you actually have time to read all your comments. Seeing I'm turning 70 in just a few days, I have been playing these songs since about 12 years of age in church. I have an original print Red Back Hymnal that belonged to my grandmother. Your playing is just great and I notice how your eyes stay right on the page. I doubt I do that except when parts are involved and I'm not sure then. I do sight read and I read cords faster than I might read notes. I catch and listen as often as possible as well as to others. The church I play for we still sing a ton of the old ones and there are a lot of new ones I have introduced them to as well. Let me say if a song doesn't have meaning, a fine melody and packs both spirit and message I'm not interested. My favorite key is E flat and my favorite timing would be anything with 8th timing. I have actually taken some of the older songs, set a different time, with modulations and made excellent choir specials. This is one way to hit the younger generation and get them involved. I have a question: Have you ever taken the old Coca Cola tune "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" and sing "Amazing Grace" to that tune. I do it in the key of F and then modulate to G bringing it back to the original tune and then modulate once more to A flat for a finish. If I had my way I would play all FLATS but that just isn't possible. I will move songs that are pitched way to high to a different key. Our choir director believes I have the ability to do anything. I hate it when we are singing and he decides he want to raise a song by a half step. I often raise a whole step to avoid something like 4 or 5 sharps. Thank you for ALL the work you put into making this time of COVID more bearable.

So thrilled to come across your wonderful renditions from the Red Back Church Hymnal! I have longed to have an instrumental of each song in the book, and you are giving us that. Thank you so much!! I have played piano for church for over 50 years, and people gush over my playing (embarrassing), but I would love to learn Southern Gospel style playing. P.S. Do you know Tracey Philips? I absolutely adore her playing. First encountered her in 2008 at the Ben Speers Stamps-Baxter Singing School in Nashville.
