The second in my series of videos where I sit and work in my sketchbook for 30 minutes whilst I chat to you about many things including my thoughts on the process, and the art supplies I'm using. In this one, I'm drawing with Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils and I'm using a limited colour palette. This drawing exercise was just for fun and to allow me to gain some experience with coloured pencils. I wasn't trying to create a finished work of art or anything recognisable; it was relaxing to draw intuitively without an 'end goal' and to just enjoy making marks and patterns on the paper! These videos are perfect to put on in the background while you're doing something else, or alternatively you could make yourself a cup of tea, grab your sketchbook and art supplies, and draw along with me!
(As this video is so long, it's been uploaded in 720p rather than 1080p due to our terrible internet connection!)

So fun! I used similar marks as you did. It's very different though! I was using different colors and I ended up filling the page.❤️

I love this sketchbook series you’re doing. It’s inspired me to try my own. Just a sketchbook for mark making 😊 A sketchbook that I can recommend would be the Seawhite of Brighton sketchbooks. They’re so nice and affordable too. I use a variety of materials in them all the time.

That's so lovely to hear! I'm having so much fun just experimenting and playing around in my sketchbooks. :) Thanks for the recommendation - I think I had some of the Seawhite watercolour paper once and I loved it! I'll check out their sketchbooks too.

Really enjoyable drawing with you Natasha. I am taking a break from a morning on the computer, Photoshop, and like you I rarely get out my pencils. In fact I haven't used them for 3 years! I usually paint with watercolour in my sketchbook. I always buy Moleskine. My tendency is to draw trees and leaves and interestingly, to me, I began just abstract ly using green and suddenly there was a leaf shape! As you mentioned, it was quite intuitive. In the time you were drawing and talking I have filled a double page spread of a tiny A6 Moleskine notebook with branches in a different style to how I would paint. So there you go. Thanks so much and Monday morning greetings from Australia. 🤗💚

So lovely to know that you were drawing along with me! Happy to keep you company during your break from the computer. 🤗 It's good to get away from the screen sometimes! I'll be making more of these sketchbook videos as I really enjoy filming them - I'm thinking that next time I may work on something that's more recognisably 'my style' rather than just playing around, but I'll be sure to continue these experiments too as I think that it's good for my brain to just concentrate on having fun with the materials! I hope that you have a lovely day (although I guess that it's night time there now!) and that your sketchbook session was a nice break from your other work. :)

I love keeping a sketchbook and have kept them for most of my life, they sort of become a routine/habit. I don't sdo much use them to plan out final paintings or digital paintings, but more they are a kind of visual diary. I have ides for work all the time so a sketchbook is a way to capture them and to give visual form to my thoughts.I work in all media in my sketchbooks. I work in them everyday, sometimes I just draw, other times I will paint, collage etc.I usually like hardback sketchbooks, and no and then like to look through old sketchbooks. I get through a few in a year.I like smaller sizeslike A% or smaller, but now and then I will buy larger sized ones.I do loke handmade sketchbooks particularly if they have handmade paper in them or are made from recycled materials too. Currently I'm trying out sketchbooks that have tinted pages and black pages, and one that has a varity of differnt papers as the pages. The artist Paul Klee once said "Drawing is like taking a line for a walk" and I have always loved that quote and idea and for me a sketchbook allows my mind to wander visually. Some times a painting will arise out of something that I created in my sketchbook. But on the whole I like to just work in my sketchbook just for the pleasure of doing so.I tend to work in acrylics for my paintings, but in my sketchbooks I feel In can just let rip creatively with mixed media etc and see what appaers on the page.Working in my sketchbooks engages my creativity and is also really relaxing, and I think also working in sketchbooks also helps me evolve as an artist,as they a re a place to try new things and to learn in.I find I can get so into my sketchbooks I can easily loose track of time!.I hope you continue to enjoy working in your sketchbooks and that it proves really rewarding for you creatively. (as it does for me)

It sounds like you have a great sketchbook 'habit'! How wonderful to have those to look back through. I know what you mean by losing track of time when working on art! I really want to start using my sketchbooks even more than I currently do; when the weather gets a bit better I'd like to take them with me on walks and stop to paint or draw with a flask of tea beside me! I love that Paul Klee quote. I'll remember that. :)

@@NatashaNewtonArt I read that quote from a book about Paul Klee yaers ago and it's stayed withme ever since. You should take a small sketchbook out with you on travels, as it helps you really focus your eye on what you are seeing, and helps you engage with the world in a new and creative way.I do have a small pocket sized sketchbook with me when I travel. I do set adise time just to work in my sketchbooks as a break from my painting and digital work, and I find it helps me go back to my work refreshed

I love the series Natasha, if you feel like making more of these videos I would happily sign up 🙃 I am not at all familiar with coloring pencils which is such a shame as they require the least fuss to just sit down and create something, great for bringing along also... The colors you picked up for this video are right up my alley, beautiful really 🤗

Thank you, Yana! 🤗 It's so good to know that you enjoy them. I've just uploaded a new Sketchbook Time video today (my favourite one so far). I'm not familiar with coloured pencils either, but I'm really enjoying my experiments with them! You're right; they require the least fuss, and when I travel I can easily take them with me. It has possibly opened up a whole new world of creativity!

Hello Natasha. I love Polychromos pencils and get good sharpening results using the Faber Castell 9000 sharpener. (I know that the advice is to use a knife, but I prefer not to.)

Thanks so much Andrea, that's good to know! I'd honestly prefer to use a sharpener too, as I don't quite trust myself with a knife. 😂

I know I'm super late to this video, but I use the Prismacolor premier pencil sharpener, and it is hands down the best sharpener I've used. It has two sharpeners, one for more of a short/wide tip, and another for a longer/thinner sharper tip (which is what I prefer also)... Just my two cents. Keep up the great work!

Thanks so much for the suggestion, Kate! I've tried several sharpeners now but never that one. It sounds great - I love that it sharpens to two different points. :)

kum has a long-point pencil sharpener while i'm sure there are others, this is the one that i use: kum automatic brake long point pencil sharpener i got mine in an artsnacks box, but they're not terribly expensive the kind of mixed media that you're talking about is similar to what leigh ellexson & furry little peach do, so they might be interesting if you haven't watched their videos yet i realize that this is a slightly older video, so please ignore me if you've already found all of this
