Can we take a minute to recognize the King of the Segue: Brian "Breakfast" Bates. He is so good at turning the topic when things seem to start getting too heated and/or losing steam. That Physics to March Madness switch was golden!

“Hello Folks!” from Fargo! I am HUGELY thankful to each of you for this podcast. I was widowed in January of 2020 and this podcast has been a big source of laughter and comfort in the years since - especially during the loneliest time, which was at the start of the pandemic where we had to be isolated. I’m so grateful to all of you! A few weeks ago you talked about earliest memories and I wanted to share mine from when I was only 9 months old. For many years I’d always had a memory of Mom handing me over to Grandma inside my grandparents’ farmhouse porch and that Grandpa was crying. I always wondered what it was about and if the memory was even real. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I learned it really happened. It turns out that on the afternoon that JFK died (Nov. 22, 1963) my parents had an appointment in a larger town and my grandparents had agreed to babysit me. My parents drove me out to their farm and Mom handed me over to Grandma inside the porch. That’s when Grandpa broke the news to them that the president was dead. I asked my folks if Grandpa was crying and they said he was, which I believe is why the memory stuck with me. I don’t remember anything else from that day; just that particular moment - but I remember it as though it was yesterday. Keep up the great work everybody! It's much appreciated!!

Huge Dusty fan here and love what he brings to the Nateland squad. I am a medical provider and always get a good laugh whenever he starts riffing on anything relating to health or wellness, but what he said last week about sunscreen after Burns Badly’s sunburn story had me especially in tears. Depending on their components, sunscreens are designed to either reflect harmful UV rays from the sun away from the skin or to absorb the UV rays themselves before they can penetrate the skin and cause damage. It is highly unlikely that any listeners are here for Dusty’s medical advice, but wanted to clear the air before anybody throws out their sunscreen. Thankful for all of you guys! I am a listener for life.
@madison_kr
@madison_kr 7 ай бұрын
That’s true but it’s also true that sunscreen doesn’t block all of the rays. It blocks a large portion of UVB and only some UVA. The UVA is the part that goes deeper and does longer term damage so when you block the UVB and then stay in the sun way longer than usual you don’t get that pink first feeling warning that he was talking about that warns you that you’ve had enough UVA. Also, there are so many studies about different times of day being better for you based on the balance of A/B rays. I’m certainly not saying we should never wear sunscreen but there are lots of interesting studies on the topic and I believe this is what he is referencing. 😊

I don't know if it's just me but I'm always so impressed with Brian "A Beautiful Mind" Bates and his ability to remember and recall so many things. Is it genetics or do you have a technique that helps you remember so much? I now reference Brian in my regular life as "this guy I know with a super impressive memory". Love everyone's energy this week!!

I must say though Brian you're ability to roll with the punches and and lean into the jokes sometimes at your own expense is so refreshing and the world would be a better place if there were more of you. Keep up the good work you ole bag of bones, your making your daughter proud:)

Love hearing that Nate likes taking pictures with people. Fun story of how Covid ruined me meeting Nate - My wife and I were going to his show in early 2020 in Madison WI. We got there early and went out to dinner only to see Nate eating with someone one table away. My mind immediately went to, "I need to get a picture, but also we need to do something funny like send over a glass of milk with ice". Before I could do anything, my mom calls me to rant about how bad Covid is even though it had just started making headlines. My wife and I had a trip to Europe planned, and I had to assure her that our flight wasn't cancelled yet so we were still going. As I hang up, I look over to find Nate is gone already. So I didn't get to say hi or take a picture, and two weeks later the airlines cancelled our trip to Europe. Love you guys and the podcast, keep up the great work!

I’m from Texas and my girlfriend is from Vermont. I can absolutely relate to the way Nate is describing Scheel’s, which is like a Buc-ee’s. We went down to Texas recently and I told her we had to stop at Buc-ee’s and she asked “what is it?” And I said “It’s Buc-ee’s!” And she asked again, “yeah, but…what is it” to which I finally realized there’s no other way to explain it other than it’s an experience.

I think we can all agree the military is the standard for best looking uniforms, yeah? As to ties, "The bottom hangs within 1 inch of the top of the belt buckle. The tie does NOT cover the belt buckle." Sources you ask? Glad you asked. Navy Article 3501.37. Dusty, once again, is correct.

😊 Agree... The triangular point at the end of the tie gets lost if it hangs over or on the belt. When the point is above, (but not too far above), it shows nicely. (What's the point of having a point if it isn't visible! 😅). Course there are ties that are "pointless" 😂.... with a straight across end, but those are not very classy.

I relate to the discussion of a joke not taking as much time as expected, but in a teaching situation instead. I teach kindergarten and sometimes the lessons go way shorter than planned so we play a game or something. So what do you do in a situation in a comedy show where you notice your timing is short? Is that where you might work in crowd jokes or do you bring in old jokes? Do you ever start doing improv? Maybe that's when you could ask the crowd to shout out suggestions of what they want. Like maybe, "The plant joke!"

Hello Folks, Today a client called in because her online banking account was suspended. Turns out…she’s deceased, at least in our systems she is. Our client was apparently as surprised by this as I was, and even more surprised that a daughter she had never heard of notified us of her passing. 🤣 I must say, she seemed to be in unbelievably good health..not at all like you’d expect from someone that died last year. Thankfully, we had good laugh about it, figured out the issue, and I was able to get her resurrected in her online account. This reminded me of the “dead” horse story! 😂 Tell Brisket and the boys hi! My name is Ross Blaisdell, and I’ve been loving the podcast since I found it only a few months ago. Dusty talking about how he wouldn’t hang out with “20 years ago Dusty” really hit home. Now I know it not just me. Over the past few years I’ve realized that I’d never want to hang out with “20 years ago Ross”. That guy was not having a good time. Thanks for talking about that, Dusty, and thanks for the fun podcast, guys.

Brickhouse Bates Brian! Just saw your set at your friend’s bday (the one with so very many views) and your Opry Debut. Hilarious. I took the family to Nate’s show in Boston and Nick, Mr. Stephen, and Nate Killedt. Hope to see the rest of Nateland crew on my southern travels!

High Folks! I love listening to you all working from home. My wife and I also listen to the standup specials to fall asleep too. My wife can never finish Dusty Slay's stand-up special. The Tennessee Kid is the favorite between us. We used to listen to Dateline episodes but found that we woke up suspicious of each other. Have any of you been approached to do any narrative work associated to sleep ASMR?? We think it would be a hit.. Take care. Matt D

Who wouldn’t want to read a book by Breakfast? I’d love his memoirs, or even just his diary. Imagine… giving back a stolen base, wearing a NKOTB tee on the first day of senior year, accidentally stalking a woman in a parking lot, awkwardly offering to take unwanted fan pics… just some of the many stories that would take the reader on an emotional roller coaster. Breadbox’s tales would have you saying “bless your heart” one moment, and have you feeling like you’re watching Scott’s Totts the next. An instant best seller!

So with my last name being Menendez, there’s only like 13000 people in the US with it. Well the person who founded St. Augustine was named Pedro Menéndez de Avilés who was likely my ancestor. I’ve never been to Florida, but I’m Cuban and have a lot of family that lives over there. Id like to give a huge thank you to the podcast for being so great and making my week better.
