Nates impression of drunk uncle Dusty was possibly the funniest moment in Nateland history. I was in tears and my co workers probably think im a crazy person. Animal attacks! I'm SO happy I have a story to share since yall mentioned fighting a bear and Buzzkill was extremely skeptical about any human being able to take on a bear and win.. This happened about 3 years ago on a camping trip with some friends. We were all sitting by the fire having a few drinks and sharing some laughs when a bear wandered into our campsite presumably smelling the hotdogs we'd been cooking earlier. Everyone panicked and slowly tried to back away, no sudden movements sort of thing. One guy actually shouted 'hey bear' which we learned earlier that day from a passing Park Ranger. It did nothing. Everyone was slowly retreating and I wasn't having any of it (probably because I had one too many Budlights) and did my best ferocious roar to scare the big bear away. Turns out he wasn't having any of it either because he immediately attacked me slashing at my chest and arms. I'm not a big guy by any means but with the adrenaline pumping I managed to bring the bear down to the ground and started raining hammer-fists down upon this beast until it went out cold. I don't know how long the 'fight' lasted because I was losing so much blood and was extremely delirious and passed out, it could've been 30 seconds or 5 minutes. When I finally woke up I realized I dreamt the whole scenario. I've never gone camping and don't drink Budlight. If yall believed this lil tale well then I don't know if Dusty is the only crazy one sitting at the table.

Dusty was right about the Grand Canyon. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens took less than a week to form basically a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. It doesn't take billions or even millions of years for that kind of erosion to take place. Instead, it happens quickly from catastrophic events. :)

Either the other three don't want to say anything about this, or it seems like they're truly naive to the facts. Years back, my family and I got to spend the night at the home of the head Grand Canyon Park ranger, and when I inquired about the Egyptian caves he smiled and said "its frowned upon if we talk about that 😬 but the truth is out there..." It was a full moon that night, and he said ok, let's go, and we loaded up, and he took us to various locations and while under a full moon it looked other worldly.

This episode couldn’t have came at a better time. Right after listening, I went on a hike and I came across a bear shortly into the hike. I remembered to use my brain like Nate suggested and zig zagged through trees yelling “Hey bear”until it lost my trail. After a quick sigh of relief you wouldn’t believe it but a wolf was standing 10 feet from me. I quickly jumped into action charging the wolf and shoving my arm down its throat. Thinking nothing else could possibly go wrong I heard the rumbling of loud thuds behind me. Standing face to face with a wild elephant I remembered to tell it “no” sternly and to my relief it begrudgingly walked away. Just as I thought I had made it out of this ordeal in one piece to my right an alligator was running at me out of nowhere but I remembered to run away in a straight line so I did just that until I reached the edge of a cliff falling into the water below. Unfortunately I was not alone in that water and was surrounded by sharks. Fortunately for me my training from this podcast kicked in and I started punching them in the gills swimming through them until reaching the shore. Just wanted to let y’all know you saved me earlier today and I really appreciate it!

A friend of mine was visiting Yellowstone and witnessed a Mom and Dad lining up their kids have Sunscreen and Insect Repellent applied, only to be followed up by bear spray. They thought that it was for humans as a repellent. They quickly found that this was not the case as their children screamed in horror as they all got sprayed down head to toe. That being said, I don't think they were in the percentage of humans who thought they could take on a bear.

A few weeks back Joe Rogan was talking with Shane, Ari and Normand about fighting animals, (including bears) and was adamant that pretty much any animal would destroy any human. There is at least one confirmed case of a human killing a bear with his "bare" hands. C. Dale Petersen fought off a grizzly bear by shoving his arm down its throat and biting his jugular. When the bear passed out, he used a fallen log to finish the job. Apparently this was witnessed by nearby campers. At least one of them was a child who suffered from PTSD after watching this go down. Big fan of the Pod but it’s been killer since Dusty joined. Suggestion for a future topic if I may - Movies & how certain ones hold special meanings to you guys. Not only will we get you giving your perspectives on movies but we’ll get to connect with you guys more hearing personal stories on why some movies mean so much to you guys. Like Dusty and Arachnophobia because of the heavy pesticides in the movie. I have a movie that always catches everyone off guard - We Bought a Zoo w/ Matt Damon. 2 years ago a week after thanksgiving My cat of 20 years had climbed onto my lap and was heavy snuggling. All his life he had been lovable but the past year he had taken to being more on his own laying on top of his cat tower or in a box. He seemed to be in a lot of pain recently and as hard as it was to think about we had been discussing potentially putting him down as the humane thing to do since he had lost his ability to see at night for about 2 years, barely ate any more and seemed to cry out a lot (in pain?). I had finally decided to have a vet come out to see him and if they deemed it was time… I stayed up with him since he seemed so happy snuggling that night. I wasn’t sure what to watch and Netflix recommended We Bought a Zoo. I thought it looked dumb but sometimes I absolutely love a dumb comedy. Heck, I’m a huge fan of this Pod! I turned it on around midnight and around 1:00 I was all choked up with tears rolling down my face when they were forced to put down a tiger, Spar. He was old and injured and I really connected the story to my cat of 20 years, who had been with me for over half of my life through many hardships, currently on my lap. I stayed up with him until about 3:00 before finally carrying him (asleep) to his cat bed and going to sleep myself. When I woke up to get ready for work he was still sleeping. It made me happy that I helped him get such a good night sleep. When I was leaving for work I checked on him again, still asleep, and that’s when I realized he has passed away sometime during that night. So that movie and just thinking of it really connects with me because it was the last night I had with my 20 year older cat that meant so much to me and without that movie, I would not of had that last night with him, cuddling as we did so much throughout his life.

Hello Folks! We recently just got back from a family vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. After listening to the “Candy” episode I gave my family all the tips for bear sightings, from shouting “Hey Bear!” to letting them know to be ready to juke them through the woods if it came to it. After seeing three bears the first day we were as prepped as we could be. What we were not prepared for was half of us getting Covid in a cabin in the woods with practically no AC and no service. To be fair though, once we got Covid we did not see another bear the rest of the week. So, “according to this”, Covid is actually a great bear repellent. Love the podcast, thanks for the laughs!

I can sense Brentwood’s frustration throughout the “which animal you could beat up?” portion and I empathize with him 10000%. Seems the boys have a loose grasp on the term “hand to hand combat”. Especially South Bend Boy who kept insisting on bring knives and air horns. The question isn’t can you outsmart these animals but can you physically take them. Although after Nate said about the lion “you control the tail, you control the lion”, maybe brainpower should be what’s being questioned here. HEY BEAR.

Taking it all the way back to one of the animal episodes where y’all talking about some animal’s feathers/fur being dyed- One time my cousin got for a purple rooster for Easter. When it got too big to live at their house in town, they gave it to my family since we lived on a farm. My chore as a kid was to get the eggs from the chicken house and let me tell you, this rooster was MEAN. It’s like it knew it had been genetically modified to be purple and it was mad at humanity for it. My dad didn’t let me get out of my chore though. Instead he gave me an old fisher price baseball bat and an empty ice cream pail, like he was preparing me for battle. In the end, my dad ended having to shoot the rooster because it attacked literally everyone. A few weeks after we had buried it, my cousins came over and my little brother dug up the rooster, brought it up to the house, and to show its previous owner. This was all caught on home video. Love the podcast! Me and my husband have been listeners since day one.

Nate, Dusty, and Aaron all talking about how a man could beat a bear in a fight is the epitome of the Nateland Podcast brilliance. Unintended brilliance. Brian was the lone voice of reason as names of Pro Wrestlers and MMA fighters are listed as possible victors over a bear. Hilarious. Thanks again for the meaningless but hilarious content.

Keep up the great work fellas! I watch your podcast at night before I go to sleep, no not to put me to sleep. It’s a good way to wind down and laugh after a long day. Any thoughts on making an episode or segment on the anatomy of a joke. I’ve heard different terms for “parts”… like: tags, punchline, scaffolding, cadence. Might be cool to get a professional perspective on how jokes are created. Anywho, keep on keepin on. Looking forward to seeing you in November for your Memphis stop.

I once had to fight off a black bear that was being fairly aggressive towards the 4 of us camping and our 2 dogs. If it was just me there is no way I could have taken that bear and black bears are half the size of Grizzlies

Watching Dusty while AAron is reading ads is so funny. He's digesting the info with his brain.

The way he nodded after Aaron said “If you’re like me and you’ve already mastered the English language” as if to say, “yes buddy, yes you did”

I think Aaron could take on a grizzly bear in just about any way. A fight, a game show, stand up battle, trivia, you name it. Unless his gout acts up, I suspect he could out run one as well.

I don’t know who Butter Bean is but every time Dusty says it I think he’s talking about Bates. Imagining Brian fighting a bear is a such a great visual! Thanks for making me laugh through this anxiety producing episode today.

Hey bear, Just thought I would mention Aaron missed one of the bears. The full phrase is “if it’s black, fight back. If it’s brown, lie down. If it’s white, good night”. This is due to the fact that polar bears will just about eat anything.

Just saw Nate, Nic & Stephan last night at the MACC. What a great night. The whole vibe was so great. I am in love with Nates Dad. He is hilarious.

Back in one of the earlier shows someone was asking & guessing what each of you had in your cups… maybe y’all need to revisit that question now that Dusty has joined the show… 😜

Hey bear, Jeffrey plackett here. Love the pod and the addition of dusty is too perfect. I think it would be super funny if dusty secretly started taking golf lessons and didn't say anything about it. Then after learning the game and becoming better going out with nate and just acting the entire time like he has no idea how to golf. Funnier if in the end he beats all of you and says it's beginner's luck 😂 keep it up. Let go folks.

Speaking of caves in Middle Tennessee- I just went to the Caverns in Pelham, TN, for the first time... a concert venue in a cave! Very cool- would love for the guys to do a comedy show there! :)

I won't lie, I miss Brittle Board's nose whistling. It reminds me of being with my Abuelita when she was still around. She's now nose whistling in heaven.

Regarding the conversation about birds. The other day some friends came over and while on our deck one person commented “what kind of tree is that?” A few minutes later someone said “oh did you see that bird?” And there was genuine excitement in the conversation. And that was the moment we all realized, we are getting old.

I started this episode with a counter on my screen and I hit the plus button whenever anyone said "Hey Bear!" Final Count: Hey Bear! - 25 Bye Bear! - 1 I'd like to see if we can beat this count in the next recorded episode.

This may be a strange request but you never know until you ask. We always see the room where the podcast is filmed from one end. Is it possible to get a look from Brian’s perspective of stuff like the screen that is paired with Aaron’s laptop and the production crew? Just curious.

I’m the assistant to the pastor at my church in Marysville, OH and this passed Saturday we had a guy get saved during our weekly men’s prayer breakfast meeting and he wanted to get baptized the next morning during service. I hadn’t met him yet so when my preacher says from the dunking tank, “This is Dusty Ray,” I fully expected the guy to go, “Alriiiiiight (with a strong emphasis on the T)🖐🏻✊🏻 We’re having a good time. I’m pumped to be here. Let’s do this.” You can only imagine my disappointment when he had no clue who Dusty Slay even was… Anyway, love the podcast and if any of you folks are ever in or around Marysville, come check the church out and say hi to one of your biggest fans!

Hey Bear! As an outdoor recreation enthusiasts who has spent time camping in Black bear and Grizzly country, there is no one right answer in what to do when attacked by a bear. but if you do fight back, go for the eyes and snout as that is your best chance to to any damage that would hurt the bear enough for it to leave you alone. Also mama bears hang around humans when they have cubs because males will avoid humans. Also if you run into a polar bear you are screwed.
