Great video, Nate. The 3 is the toughest punch to learn and to throw well. You explained it, and showed it perfectly. Thank you!

Nate - I like your approach to keep the same hand position (thumb facing you) for short, medium or long range left hooks. Some trainers say to change the hand position depending upon the distance. I never thought that would be practical. In the heat of battle, you’re not going to have the time to figure which position should be used. Thanks for another fine video!

While the technique this guy is demonstrating is sound, the way our trainer taught us was pretty much like this with the addition of a slight dip to the left right before throwing it and then straightening up as you rotated your hips to unleash it. It added a lot of power to the punch. It did telegraph the punch a bit, but doing it after slipping a punch and as a counter it was devastating.

You seem like you give some good advice but man is it hard to hear you. Need to mic up or something. Other then that very nice video. Also if you have time can you do a video showing the basic jab cross combination? Specifically the footwork for it. I always seem to lose my balance when throwing the cross and my head shifts way too far over to the left in orthodox stance. Thanks man.

that was exactly what i needed.. you cant imagine how much you helped me. some shadowbox and hitting the bag like that will do the job for start. thanks!

hey man thanks this helped. I thought I already had a decent left hook but I really feel that whipping motion driving my arm from the power in my hips and my core rather than driven from my shoulder which used to cause me shoulder pains! more power now and less pain!

the whip great analogy.

Great video but I always like to lock the left leg and push up to a position where all the weight is on the right leg and my toes on the left leg is gingerly touching the ground. Also I always liked to drag the left hand behind the shoulder so their is a lag between the left hand and the shoulder. These are just some modifications that I made to the movement as I got older. Felt like it really allowed me dig for power. Thanks for the video.

Great stuff, Nate. How effective do you think the 1-3-2 combination is? I have a difficult time throwing it. After I throw the jab, do I bring my left hand back to my face, then throw the hook? Or, do I jab and throw the hook while my left is still out there? That is quicker, yet gives me more trouble. Take care, man.

I feel you missed an important point about snapping back on to your rear heel which starts raised. I see you doing it obviously but you don't mention. I think it's something important for people trying to learn the left hook to understand.

Great video! Really want to work on my left hook and being able to be as relaxed as you are! You make it look so easy!Just quick question : when you throw your left hook why is it not higher? Seems to be on the same height as your chest as oppose to the head (or is it just the angle at which the video is shooting)? If I keep practicing throwing to the height of my opponent's chest, I will never hit his head! Thanks in advance!

yes but to throw a powerful left hook using the 1-2-3 combination you should throw a light jab followed up by a powerful right hand punch (if your orthodox) so that the weight transfer and whip effect of the left hook after will generate a lot of force and thus your opponent will be KTFO!!! lol

no one can ever perfect the left hook it comes naturally. So many fighters when they go in the the ring they want to knock out their oppenent out but do not know that they have to win the fight first, the knockout comes naturally

Instead of pivoting the lead foot, try planting the heel of your rear foot and only lean into the lead knee. More power

Correct me if I'm wrong here, his hook looks like it's too high for a body shot and too low to hit the head.

There is a reverb issue with the place you record this tutorials. Your voice hits the mic with a huge reverb. Even the audiance volume up, your words are not clear. I'm not sure if it will work, but you can try to trim the high frequancies of the audio clip. You can do that by a simple equalizer in your editor (a low pass filter might do. There is no need for most of the high frequancies in male voice recording.) I'm hoping that will help a little, because reverb is filling too much high freq. space in your recording. And Thanks for the tutorials.

Gökhan Bıyık (Edit) I just figured out that you can get rid of this reverb issiue by using a simple noise gate plugin.

It looks too stiff when in motion; in my opinion the best way to throw a hook is like how a cat would throw one..
@shoalinxcowboy78208 жыл бұрын
+aysen1001 at least you said I have one lol but it's fairly easy if you think about it when you see a cat strike it's loose and very quick that's because they relax their shoulder to then let the paws and forearms do the damage when the feline swings instead of having a stiff shoulder cause otherwise your'e gonna have to wined up your waist and shoulders to actually inflict any damage, but doing the wined your'e leaving the face open to a fighter who understand a loose shoulder can be much more explosive shots than a stiff shoulder, so pretty much throw a hook like a cat would lmao.
@aysen10018 жыл бұрын
+ernesto rosa you do know that you get power from the waist and the leg. otherwise it would not hurt at all. turning your body with the shoulder and arms gives it that quick momentum and much added power than just throwing your arm by itself.
@shoalinxcowboy78208 жыл бұрын
+aysen1001 right but only if your'e a beginner remember the more a human practice the better that athlete gets; I do agree with what your'e saying but i'm saying there's different ways to execute a well hook either doing your method, or mines doesn't really matter but to me what is really important is "what works better for that athlete" in my opinion i like the quick pop loose shoulder because believe it or not you can draw a lot of power from a short distance than having to go through a process to catch it all at one time and lets say you miss then you got pull your arm back to guard before your opponent gets to you but all your weight you shift in that punch put you in a bad position. But those are my opinion i guess what ultimately matter is what works best for you lol.
