Listening to this podcast having Nate bring back up the penguin subject and then Dusty was talking about shooting skeet it reminded me of what I was in Boy Scouts. I We were on a week-long camp and they had a shooting area you could go to shoot skeet to earn a merit badge. My friend Greg, who was fantastic friend, but he had some similar disadvantages to what Nate deals with far as coming up with the right word or pronouncing things properly. So he came into my tent and said; "Marshall, wake up, it's time to go shoot plastic penguins!" I had no idea what he was talking about but he was dead set on getting to the plastic penguin shooting area as early as we could, to beat the crowd. It took a good 5-10 minutes to finally figure out that he wanted to go shoot clay pigeons. To this day, Greg and I will sometimes get together to go shoot plastic Penguins For Old Times Sake.

Reminiscing my college years was fun today as I was listening to you all. My parents weren't able to financially help me with my tuition, so I had to work in a grocery store to help pay my way. I was able to live at home as my parents gave me shelter and food and also gave me some encouragement which was great. My Dad in his own humorous way, told me that since I've decided to continue on to College, he thought it would be best to possibly try to become an astronaut. When I asked him why he said that I would probably be taking up SPACE...............in school...

I loved this episode and look forward to hearing "College Part 2". I particularly liked the stint about everyone's school and career paths being different. I always planned on getting a PhD in chemistry, but before I finished my Bachelor's I had gotten a job as a Chemist. Instead of choosing to leave my good-paying job to go on and get my PhD I chose to stay where I was and not continue schooling. You would not BELIEVE the flack I got from professors and fellow students for "not finishing". But I always felt like the whole point of this was to get a good job doing something I love and I already had that. I guess they just couldn't fathom someone going outside of the previously estblished "Chemist Career Path". Got my Bachelor's degree and never looked back.

My Gap year was 14 years, had an entire career in hospitality before deciding to go back to school for a degree in biology at 32. Best decision of my life - the gap AND the decision to go back when I finally decided I *for sure* wanted to work in the biology field. Hey folks! As someone with 2 master’s degrees (one in English lit, one in education), the difference between the two year and one year is just intensity and timing. My English lit master’s (done because I wanted to increase my knowledge and diversity of lit) was two years. I had time to work and do other things. My master’s in education (needed to be a teacher) was extremely intense. It was a 2 year program pushed into 1. So you all the course work in a shorter amount of time and have almost zero time for work or for other things. They are both usually a similar amount of credit hours.

Nate, I totally agree with what you said about how shows include unnecessary details that don't matter or help progress the plot. A great example of this is The Borne Identity; with the exception of quick flashbacks (which are helpful for the audience), the movie mostly consists of action and never feels boring and, while there are small subplots, they do not take away from the enjoyment of the movie. However, I do also agree with Aaron that these subplots help humanize the character. If every movie was shot like The Borne Identity, the main character would feel robotic, which is go for Borne because he is a trained assassin, but this would not work in other movies where the main character is supposed to have more emotion (i.e. the Batman movies). In general though, you are on point. I fast forward through so many shows these days and it does not seem to affect my understanding of the plot.

Hey Bear, Couldn't agree with Nate more on the gap year idea. I did okay in high school and went to MTSU (with all my high school friends) and left with a 1.8 GPA. It took four more years to bring that score up to a 2.7. Now I own a Chick-fil-A and see young people who work for me heading to college with no idea what they want to do. My advice is always the same: it's worth it to take time and find out what you want to do. Truett Cathy always said: "Find our what you love and you'll never 'work' another day in your life." So many people find out they hate their career path two years into college and then they feel it is too late to change. Keep up the great work, fellas.

Signed up for a full slate of classes in '04 just so I could stay on my dad's insurance, then immediately dropped all of them after I could show written proof of enrollment. Went on Spring Break in 2005 and didn't go back until 2008. I took so many credit hours, I no longer qualified for financial aid. Started and stopped 5 different degree programs before finally settling in on an AAS in Machining Technology. Yup... 14 years for an Associate's degree.

But with the Gap Year topic.....here is another major problem with it...is when kids or young adults hear about other more fortunate or wealthy folks getting to go live in another Country for a year or just travel or party and not work that year. The thing that grinds my gears is the fact that then our kids or normal regular working kids, think oh I want to do that! Or why can my parents not let me take a gap year! Grrrr! Hey B-Bop, in The Unforgiven, the fact that the woman’s face was not severely cut up was an integral part of the story line. The severity of the injuries was exaggerated by the word of mouth that was the Twitter of the day. If Eastwood’s character had known the truth, he may have stayed home.

I drove the white neon in 1997, my senior year, in our high school parking lot. I was halfway through the drunk driving portion and was nailing it. I hadn't knocked over a single cone. As I was finishing the track they couldn't give me the victory so they started throwing up the pedestrians a split second before I was going to pass them. "Oh, you just killed two kids!". It was garbage. I don't drink, but to this day I feel like I'd be an awesome drunk driver because of that experience.

Hey Dusty, movie suggestion for you: “Locke” with Tom Hardy. You said you liked “a good ol’ conversation movie” with “a lot of talking.” This movie is literally one guy just making/receiving phone calls in his car. It’s VERY good.

When you pencil close your mouth before hitting the water- I still have a chipped tooth from a 2001 cliff jumping incident. True, it was only 50 feet, but I fell long enough I was like... "hmm, I am still falling"

Is Nate trying to say we should make it easier to get into gambling? One of the most crippling addictions. Love the show

Nate was lowkey telling us to gamble, just not "sports-gamble" as he put it lol

I would bet the reason the calculations for the height if Mt. Everest were off by 33ft is the curvature of the Earth triangle.
