I was in an accident two weeks ago and I totaled my car. I spun across 4 lanes of interstate and hit the Jersey wall. First, no joke, I was listening to the podcast since it was Wednesday morning. Once I made peace with the fact that I’d hear no more Nateland podcasts, I waited for the 50+ mph impact and then it was done and I was still alive. So was the podcast, playing on! My airbags went off in front, legs and side curtain. The airbags inflate and deflate so quickly you don’t even notice. It doesn’t hurt. I was so amazed I was still alive and I credit the airbags. I had only minor injuries. Hey Bear!

In the parking lot of my local Farm Fleet, a guy who was parked about 20 feet away shouted over to me that he had a random question for me. I kept my hand on the car door, ready to jump in and drive away in case he was some sort of creep. Instead, he asked if I had gone to see Dusty Slay in Iowa City a couple of weeks before. Apparently, he had been sitting a few seats away from my husband and I. We had a short conversation about how great Dusty is, and I told him to listen to the Nateland podcast. To end the conversation, he said, “We’re having a good time” and did the Dusty wave. I went from being creeped out to smiling ear-to-ear. Thanks for coming to Iowa, Dusty! Also, we’ll see Nate in June! Keep up the great work, guys!

Former butcher here... If it's labeled "Ground Beef," its a mix of different cuts and different fat ratios. It could be anything and usually very cheap. I don't buy it, personally. Look for ground chuck, round, sirloin, etc. That tells you what cut of beef its from and should come with a higher accuracy of lean/fat ratio. As far as what its fed, most cattle are fed corn because it yields faster growth and more fat (which Americans love). Grass fed are leaner and sometimes more gamey tasting (which i like).

The whole "not wearing the band's shirt at their concert" rule comes from the movie PCU. A buddy of mine came up with a much better rule: You can only wear a band shirt if a) you've seen the band live and/or b) you own the band's entire discography. It's a rule that's even more endearing for me after that same friend passed unexpectedly a few years ago. Your convo about "the rules" made me smile remembering him...thanks for that...

Speaking of Oppenheimer - we limit what our kids watch almost as much as Nate’s parents did… my 84 year old father took my 13 year old son to see this movie about such an important time in our nation’s history. Hey Bear! After seeing Dusty's show last week, I've now seen all 4 Nateland guys perform at least once. Dusty did a meet & greet after the show & I was going to say hey, get a pic, & mention something about the podcast, but the people running it made us feel like we had to rush through, so it kind of threw me off. I didn't want be rude & hold the line up, so I said something I keep replaying in my head & laughing at... several of the things I was going to say got combined into 1 short sentence where I told Dusty, "Thanks for coming" as if I was thanking him for coming to my show. What are some of the funnier interactions you've had with fans? Anyway, thanks for finally coming out towards Pittsburgh & responding as if my comment made sense. Thanks for the weekly laughs! - Zach

I liked Dusty’s question about why he didn’t see the moon before the eclipse happened. It would be cool to see the moon creeping up on the Sun, but a solar eclipse only occurs when we are in the new moon phase. Like Aaron said, from our perspective, the moon is in shadow during a solar eclipse. So, the moon is not seen during this time, but a Lunar Eclipse happens when the moon is Full. Enjoying the podcast! Keep having a good time!

Great topic for today! I am passionate about how people are as "fans". When I was 10 years old, I picked my teams and have stuck with them through thick and thin for 40 years now. I am a Mets and 49ers fan and have never been to those states. Being from Atlanta, the only home team I have ever been a fan of was the Thrashers, but changed to the Predators when the Thrashers moved to Canada. The best rule for being a fan is to be a true fan no matter what. Also, one of my top rules is to never boo your team. You can be disappointed, but if you can't get out there and do better, then you have NO reason to boo them! Keep up the great work guys!

It’s cool hearing a lot of your insights about starting out in stand-up. I especially thought Byron’s comment about taking classes and learning little things like moving the mic stand. I’ve always thought moving the mic stand was one of the best parts of his shows. Kidding of course! I really do enjoy all of your comedy, and Bart has some of the best low-key one liners during the podcasts. On a separate note, watching y’all run the 40 yd dash was the best part of my year so far and Barry Bates run is EXACTLY as I would imagine it! Super bummed Dusty wasn’t there to run.

I think that the pillars of Southern comedy are The Andy Griffith Show and Jerry Clower. I’m 45 and I met Jerry Clower at a Sonny’s BBQ when I was a kid. Clower’s significance was the storytelling aspect of comedy. He wasn’t a one-liner, or telling stories only as a setup. The whole story was the bit. It’s just like when I was a kid sitting and listening to the grown ups tell stories. I wish that there was more discussions among comedians about what makes Souther comedy unique.

As an Auburn fan in Alabama, I couldn’t love Reep’s fandom rules more! It was good to hear some common sense after Aaron’s unhinged anti-Auburn rant a few months back. The big state schools almost always have the rudest craziest fans (Alabama is no exception, no matter what Weber, the poorly closeted Bama fan says). Also, the worst ones tend to be those with no affiliation (just ask our trees). Full disclosure: I’m married to a Bama grad/fan and she’s amazing. Also, Dusty’s joke about it is hilarious and true. This episode about fandom hits a little harder for me today, as it comes out the same day that my favorite team, the Arizona Coyotes, are playing their last game in Arizona before (reportedly) moving to Utah. To me, fandom is all about the experiences and memories, and I’ll remember a lot of great moments, from going to games as a kid with my Dad, to taking my daughter to games. Been a tough couple days, and more tears will be shed tonight, but I appreciate having you guys to provide some levity today.

I totally get where Jon is coming from with the 49ers and Panthers. I’ve been an Oakland Athletics fan since 1987 when I lived near the Bay Area. While “working” (I was 7 years old) on my uncle’s farm, I didn’t have a hat so he gave me one of his. Yep, it was an A’s hat, and I’ve followed them ever since. I know, not a great story, but that’s what it is. My family moved from there a year later and settled in Utah a few short years after that. I still root for the A’s (no jokes please), but have said as Jon did, “If MLB moves or expands to Utah, I’ll jump ship without hesitation.” And that’s not to spite the Athletics, I just know it’s much easier to be a fan of a local team than one in whose market I don’t live.

So, not sure where I fall in the Jon Reep rules of fandom. I live in deep South Texas among a family of Dallas Cowboy fans, myself a huge fan of the Tom Landry years. I jumped on the '85 Bears bandwagon (who didn't?) mainly because I am such a huge Walter Payton fan. Almost 40 years later and in constant disappointment mode, I've never jumped off the bandwagon and have fully invested in all things Chicago Bears cheering them on through the highs and mostly lows. So, am I entitled to carry the "true fan" label having never lived in Illinois or had any other ties to Chicago? Can't wait to see Nate in Corpus Christi this Thursday - front row tickets locked and loaded!

This was another great episode as always. I know it's probably not possible with everyone's schedule, but I would love if there was another podcast through Patreon or something to that effect. I feel like I just finish these episodes too quickly.

I really love the comments that Brian chooses but I would be curious to see the comments that Nate, Aaron, and Dusty would pick. I feel like the comment vibes would be way different. Not sure if anyone else but Brian has the time to read through comments...

Grew up in the state of Oklahoma. There were three major universities here with their own Following. I ended up playing sports in a small division two school in Arkansas. When people ask me, who do I root for seeing how the state of Oklahoma is (in)famous for athletics. I always mention the school where I played in Arkansas. I like the set of rules Jon Reep laid out.

I’m surprised they didn’t just edit out Aaron’s request not to read the one comment. It would have negated all the speculation about his private life. Hope everything is ok.

Hey bear! Im right there with you guys on the aisle seat. Definitely the best seat on a plane. I’d prefer the other people not get up but I’d much rather be in the aisle and get up if the other two seats gotta pee or something than have to ask people to move for me. Plus with the aisle I can stretch a leg or two and that’s nice for the knees.

I would argue that family members of the coaching staff should be platinum elite. I know recruits before recruits know they’re recruits. I know game plans before the players do. Shout out to my BIL, Drew Stutts who won NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship and was named National Head Coach of the Year! Go Freed Hardeman Lions!

I was an enlisted submarine sailor and wore Texas A&M gear on my boat. I honestly was not aware that Navy was an actual college team. I ended up going to The University of Texas at Austin after I got out and my oldest will graduate from the USNA next month. I wear Longhorn and Navy gear throughout the year. Am I wrong?

With all the talk about Bryan picking the same 12 people for comments, I wonder if Blacklist notes down people to NOT read comments from. I’d be interested to know if comments won’t be read because of a previously mean or inappropriate comment or something. Great special taping, Nate!

I completely disagree with you all saying that it is okay to wear the shirt of the band you are going to see. Jeremy Piven, in one of my favorite all-time movies PCU, stated to his friend (Gutter) that he was not allowed to wear the T-shirt of the band he was going to see. His classic line was "don't be that guy". I quote that line all the time to this day and couldn't agree more.

Another rule for sports-if you have an immediate family member attend, you can say “we”. If a parent has a kid attend UK, for example, they’re a “we”.

Hearing the ground beef conversation made me wonder if the guys know how they get the mystery flavor of dum dum suckers? It is where the end of the roll of one flavor and the start the next flavor overlap. They just cut it anyways and put on a mystery wrapper.

I was at a Nickel Creek concert, and the band wanted to create an intimate, no-camera/no phone moment during a song. A girl in front of us wouldn’t put her iPad down as she recorded. One of the band members singled her out and sternly gestured for her to turn her device off, which the girl wouldn’t do. So I guess she has footage of the band being annoyed with her to this day.

I disagree with Jon’s idea that fans can’t say “we” I believe that if a fan follows a team through the good and the bad that they deserve the right to say “we” even when bragging. I’m 16 and a vols fan so my whole life up until the last few years has been awful when it comes to college football but I never stopping rooting for the vols. This unwavering loyalty earns me the right to say “we”
