Once the dog goes in the direction of the leash, we can use it to teach positions like sit / down / stand, directing into a heel position, walking forwards, walking backwards, or any other number of behaviors. We also use leash pressure to easily teach our dogs the “Stay” command.
Leash pressure also helps to teach a dog what behaviors are not acceptable without issuing a correction. For example, if a dog likes to jump up on people, you can perform the following exercise (for the purpose of this book we will be using the word “wrong”. You can use whatever word you choose):
• Have a friend start petting your dog.
• When the dog jumps up, have your friend immediately stop petting.
• Say “Wrong”, and then add the leash pressure, pulling the dog off the friend.
• Once all four paws have returned to the ground, turn off the leash pressure, then have the friend immediately return to petting.
We can also use this to stop specific behavioral issues such as jumping up on furniture or playing too rough with another dog. We follow the same idea of saying “Wrong” then applying the pressure, and releasing the pressure when the dog does what we wish.
Remember, positive reinforcement is limited by how much the dog wants the reward, but negative reinforcement means the dog is given no choice but to comply (and learn).

Another great training session. I love the way my puppy can anticipate what I want by my body language before I get there. She communicates with me so well. Piercing stares to tell me something and shows me what it is, asks me for playtime, offers me climbs, goes to her bed, does the most enthusiastic downs and spins. People always commenting on how well trained she is. All because of you Nate 👏🏻👏🏻 thank you so much ☺️

Some ppl think that by watching videos they will have this amazing dog in a few weeks.It doesn’t work that way.You need to actually put in the time and have patience.It Isn’t rocket science,please also don’t use the crate as a punishment device.Some dogs also learn a lot faster than others or will succeed in a certain area quicker than in other areas. And probably IMO,the most important advice to crate training(which is the easiest for potty training and also gives the puppy a sense of security),NEVER leave the Collar on when they are in the crate. I’m no means an expert trainer,far from it,I just believe training needs to be a 24/7 fluid process.Spend time with your puppy,as much as possible and don’t ever lose your temper.Every moment of every day can be a training experience,as in you can be training when not training..if that makes sense.Also sometimes the puppy just isn’t feeling it so you have to adapt to that as well.

Hi Nate! Thank you so much for the obedience series, I've been binge watching it in anticipation for my new GSD. Getting her in one week! Quick question about the order of training. Would a rough outline of the process look something like this? 1. Teach name 2. Conditioning to markers 3. Luring 4. Luring into basic commands/positions 5. Leash Pressure 6. Verbal Commands Thanks again and please keep up the youtube videos they are gems!

Hi!! Love the new video editing!! I have been studying your videos (+ the training manual on my kindle!) religiously weeks before I brought my gsd pupper home. She is almost 10 weeks now (home since 8w) and she’s got a good grasp of the markers (yes, free, no), luring/steering, leash pressure, sit, down, spin, touch, between, heel, place, climb, paw, crawl, back-up, out, “attack” (for tug). Obviously all of these need polishing and for some she hasn’t tied a verbal command with the cue yet. I’m in DISbelief at where we are at with obedience training, it’s fascinating that I’m having somewhat of a conversation with my dog with my cues and markers (and HER cues to me as well)! And this is ALL thanks to your guidance. I unfortunately haven’t had the same renaissance moment with behavior. First among my many challenges is her apparent fear (I think it’s a mix of fear + desire to play) of strange dogs. She will often get fixated on dogs near us and bark if they are too close. At a certain level of arousal I don’t attempt to distract her with commands so that she doesn’t get used to ignoring me (is this the right way to think?). Instead I get out treats and make fun noises and excitedly begin to run in the opposite direction. I’ve been doing this since her very first day when she growled and barked at a high energy airport security dog and I’m not sure my approach is working. I was also concerned that even if this approach worked, if the root cause of the problem is that she is anxious about these dogs (afraid/excited), always distracting her from stimulating things wouldn’t actually address the problem..? Also, are trainer-supervised puppy playtimes a good idea as part of socialization? She overcame her timidity the first class. Was happily excited for her second class. And on the third she was screaming and squirming demanding to be let down to play. I strongly believe she has and will continue to learn important dog skills and manners, but I wonder if these playtimes are setting her up to have problems on leash. Sorry for the length! I wish you were based in NYC.. I have lots more questions and I’m super eager to learn the SORCERY that you practice.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Trainer-supervised play sessions are great. Your pup may learn some behaviors you don't like from the other dogs, but should be easy to fix with obedience. My biggest concern with group plays is that the dog doesn't have a bad experience, such as getting attacked by another dog. Most of the other questions are covered in version 3 of my dog training manual which should be released soon. I'll announce it on KZbin and it'll be free to download for the first week. :)

Hi Nate! I've been absolutely loving your videos which are really helping me with my new German shepherd puppy. Just ordered your book too. I just got a Martingale collar to assist with the verbal commands. A question I have about it: is the Martingale collar mainly a training tool or can it be used as the puppy's regular collar? I wasn't sure if accidental pressure in various situations would potentially confuse the leash pressure training. Thanks!
@Run4Fun817
@Run4Fun817 3 жыл бұрын
Great video! I think you might have misspoken around 8:30 though. My understanding is that the negative punishment is taking away the leash pressure when he acts politely. Applying leash pressure would be positive punishment, and not petting when he is jumping is negative reinforcement.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Lol! Thanks, but your understanding is incorrect. No worries though as people confuse these all the time. The foundation and understanding of dog psychology starts with the four quadrants of operant conditioning. Since this is something that most people have a hard time understanding, let’s go over it. The four are: positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative reinforcement, and negative punishment. These can be broken down into two factors: • Reinforcement means to encourage a behavior to be repeated, whereas punishment means to discourage a behavior from being repeated. • Positive means to add something to the equation to influence behavior, while negative means to remove something to influence behavior. It can be tricky to see “positive” as discouraging a behavior, as in positive punishment, and “negative” as encouraging a behavior, as in negative reinforcement-but it’s easy to understand in the context of operant conditioning where “positive” and “negative” are not used to mean the same things we normally use them for, such as “good” and “bad”. We'll start with positive reinforcement and how it's applied to dog training. As explained, “positive” in this context means “to add to the equation” and reinforcement means to encourage a behavior to be repeated. Therefore, a positive reinforcement translates to giving your dog anything your dog sees as valuable, with the goal of encouraging the repeat of a behavior. Negative reinforcement is when pressure is turned on to get the desired behavior, and once the behavior is completed, the pressure is turned off. Two things must take place in order for negative reinforcement to work: • Once the pressure is turned on, it cannot be turned off until the dog complies. • The moment the dog complies, the pressure must immediately be turned off. Positive Punishment: This is when something is added to the equation that the dog doesn't like, to reduce the likelihood of the behavior being repeated. Last but not least is negative punishment. This is when something is removed from the equation that the dog likes in order to decrease an undesired or bad behavior. This is something that is commonly practiced in dog training.

My Miniature Poodle puppy walks well with a jacket harness on the back, but using a collar he cries in pain as it seems he has a sensitive neck. Do I need a leash on the collar to do proper leash pressure? Or should I try to train him to accept the collar leash? Or a harness on the bottom front?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 9 ай бұрын
My default recommendation is to use a leash and collar, provided there are no medical restrictions. If a veterinarian confirms that the dog has a condition where a collar might be detrimental, I would advise against it. Otherwise, if the dog is cleared by the veterinarian, employing a leash and collar is the way to go.

I have a 6 month old Mallinois and heard different opinions on wether to run/mtb with him at this stage of his life because of health related issues that he can have later in life given that he is still growing, etc. Do you have any thoughts on the matter? I base the training on each individual dog. You don't want to take a puppy on runs as they are still growing, but play running in the yard should be fine. If I do start taking a dog on runs, I always start with a short distance and increase as the dog gets better and more comfortable with it. If you go on a run and your dog is limping after, then you know that you have gone too far. So then you would adjust accordingly. :)

I’m having trouble keeping my puppy from chewing the leash. 😂 She’s not quite getting the leash yet. 🦮

Lol! That's normal. Popping the leash out of the dogs mouth is an easy way to fix that issue. :)

Hey Nate I already reached out to you via Whatsapp and on your Homepage since it’s a more lengthy question with added background. Should I still post it here?

Lol! Not sure what you mean by "slap someone with it's tail" but check out the response that I had on this same question that you posted on the "How to Find and Choose the Right Breeder for You. With Bethany Preud'homme."

Hey Nate, we just done our first full day with the new puppy. Hes very good other then at night when we pick him up put him in the crate he whines and cries for a very long time and it’s so hard to listen to. I had watched your crate training video beforehand but a family member didn’t and originally just picked him up last night and put him in and closed it. So to prevent any accidents and such we have continued to do it today but it’s heart breaking. Can u give me some advice please as I have tried to positively reward him coming into the crate with food and toys in there but it clearly takes a long time. He likes to sleep on the floor next to sofa but we don’t allow him to at night. Please can you help me out. Much appreciated

I would follow the steps in the crate training episode. Even if you do the training correctly, some dogs will still whine in the crate. If that's the case, check out this video and jump to 37:08 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ2le3mZjM50sM0 :)

@@NateSchoemer Thank you so much, thats what i've been doing and he is able to go in to eat from my hand in the corner or play with a toy. I'v'e also got a chew toy designated to his crate It's getting better but I will give t that method of the metal bowl a shout when he whines. How often do you put in the crate throughout the day?

You scared me for a second. I know that its rare to have 100% agreement with any other trainer however when you were talking about -R I was like... “ok Nate I’m listening to hear you out but if you go full on escape avoidance” then you started it using a +R contingent with the food. Which I totally agree with. Then I was like yeah ok I teach this pretty much the same. Basically you broke it down into stages that the dog could handle first which is awesome. Then you could maybe even say that with this sort of training you are creating a +CER to the leash pressure and so the leash pressure could be a secondary reinforcer (obviously I am stretching the assessment of the learning in the pups brain there) but definitely the dog is like ‘oh leash pressure down I know what that means = good stuff’. Not sure what your cue ‘wrong’ is though. I’ll look forward to a video about that. Thanks for this vid.

Thanks! Yeah, wrong just predicts leash pressure. You can see an example in my stay video, but I'm using the word "no" instead of "wrong", but the process would be the same. Cheers! :)

I love your training, but unfortunately my puppy thinks she has to bite my hand off and then eat the treat.🤷‍♂️

Have a leash and collar on the puppy. Then hold the leash in one hand with a part of the leash resting under your foot, so if he jumps up, the leash will stop him. Also, be sure not to add any tension on the leash when he is sitting nicely. Then slowly start to move your hand with a treat towards your puppy, if he jumps up, stop him with the leash and move the hand away. Then when he's sitting again, repeat the process. continue to do it until he stays sitting until the food reaches him. If he's aggressively biting at the food, then another trick is to hold the food in your fist. if he tries biting at the food, then the hand stays closed. Once he's being gentle, then slowly start to open the hand. Instantly close it again, if he starts to bite too hard. Repeat until he knows that he needs to take the food nicely. The idea is basic cause and effect. I hope this helps! :)

That's normal. It's called a classical opposition reflex. That's why we have to teach the dog to go with the pressure on the leash as explained in the video. :)
